Before we get into the plan, it helps to know that this crossing has two checkpoints in practice: the Mukdahan border checkpoint on the Thai side at the foot of the bridge, and the Savannakhet checkpoint on the Lao side. The public bus shuttles between these two checkpoints across the second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, a total distance of about 17 km. The actual ride takes around an hour once you factor in document checks on both sides, and the fare is roughly 45 THB per trip. What eats the most time isn't the distance, it's the passport queue. So this plan has you leave the Thai side mid-morning rather than rushing across before dawn.
Paperwork and what to know before you cross
Paperwork is where people get confused most often, so let's keep it clear. Foreign visitors typically cross into Savannakhet on a passport, and many nationalities can enter Laos visa-free or on a visa on arrival, which lets you travel anywhere in the country. There's also a temporary Border Pass option available to Thai citizens (issued at the Mueang Mukdahan district office or at service points by the checkpoint, using only a Thai ID card), but it only allows travel within Savannakhet province and has a limited number of days. If you're only doing a day trip into Savannakhet town, a Border Pass is enough; but if you want to stay overnight or venture further, a passport is far more flexible.
- Money β the Lao side takes both kip and baht; many shops in town accept THB directly, though the rate may not be great. Carry some kip for the market and songthaew rides.
- Checkpoint fees β the Lao side often collects a small entry/exit fee in cash, especially outside office hours and on holidays. Keep small notes handy.
- Checkpoint hours β the border is open from morning into the evening, but going early and returning before dusk is the safest bet for catching a bus. Don't plan your return for early evening, as bus frequency thins out.
- SIM/data β your Thai signal cuts out once you cross the bridge. Turn on roaming or buy a Lao SIM at a shop in Savannakhet town if you need data for a longer stay.
- Time in Laos β same as Thailand, no need to adjust your watch.
About the cross-border bus
The Mukdahan-Savannakhet public bus run by Thailand's Transport Co. (BKS) departs from Mukdahan Bus Terminal. Check schedules and book ahead on the E-Ticket app, at transport.co.th, or by calling 1490. If you're driving your own car, you'll need paperwork to take the vehicle out of the country, which is more of a hassle. For a simple sightseeing trip, the easiest move is to park on the Thai side and take the bus across.
Book the activities in your Mukdahan trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want β prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Block 1 Β· Morning: Walk the Indochina Market by the Mekong
The Mukdahan Indochina Market stretches along Samran Chai Khong Road, right beside the Mekong in the town center. It's one of the largest souvenir markets in Isan, open daily from around 8am. Goods range from imports out of China, Vietnam, and Laos to local Mukdahan silk and crafts. Mornings are more pleasant to walk, since the sun isn't harsh yet and the stalls are fully stocked. Use this block to shop, grab a snack, and take in the Mekong views across to Savannakhet on the far bank.
Indochina Market + the Mekong in Mukdahan
Straight talk
In recent years part of the Indochina Market has been closed for renovation, and the stalls aren't as lively as in its heyday. Some shops close on weekdays. If you want the full buzz, aim for a weekend, but if you're hoping for the cheap, unusual finds of the old days, you may have to temper your expectations a little.
Block 2 Β· Late morning to midday: Cross Friendship Bridge 2
This is the heart of the plan. From Mukdahan Bus Terminal you board the public bus, which stops at the Mukdahan border checkpoint so you can get your Thai exit stamp, then you reboard and the bus crosses Friendship Bridge 2 over the Mekong to the Savannakhet checkpoint where you handle Lao entry. After that the bus carries you into Savannakhet town. The bridge itself is over 1.6 km long; the view from the middle is lovely, but you can't get off to take photos, you have to stay on the bus. If the queues aren't long, the whole process takes about an hour.

Block 3 Β· Afternoon: Walk Savannakhet's old town
Savannakhet's old town has a charm unlike other Lao tourist towns: quiet, slow, and full of French colonial shophouses still standing. The hub is the central town square, where St. Teresa's Church, an old Catholic church, stands out as the landmark. Around it are faded-paint old buildings, some now open as cafes and guesthouses. This afternoon block is made for unhurried wandering, stopping to take photos and sitting over a coffee while you watch the town go by.
Central town square + St. Teresa's Church
The middle of the old town, ringed by French-era buildings. The old Catholic church is the main photo spot, and the whole quarter is walkable.
Savannakhet Dinosaur Museum
Holds dinosaur fossils dug up in the province. Open mornings until around 11:30am, so if you want to go in, plan it as a morning block on a second day.
Savan Xai Market (Singapore Market)
A big central market on Sisavangvong Road with food and goods of all kinds. Locals call it the Singapore Market.
The Mekong on the Savannakhet side
A riverside walk where you look back across to Mukdahan. Breezy in the late afternoon, a nice spot to rest before heading back.
Walking Savannakhet's old town
If you have more than one day
If you want to pay respects at That Ing Hang Stupa, said to be a twin of Phra That Phanom, allow extra time, since it's outside town. It works best as a morning block on a second day before you cross back to Mukdahan in the afternoon. If you're on a Border Pass doing a single day trip, just focus on the old town in the city center.
Block 4 Β· Evening: Back to Mukdahan, close the trip by the Mekong
The return mirrors the way out, just with the checkpoints reversed: stop at the Savannakhet checkpoint for your Lao exit stamp, cross the bridge back, then stop at the Mukdahan checkpoint to re-enter Thailand. You'll reach the Thai side around early evening, perfect timing for dinner by the Mekong. The Samran Chai Khong Road area has restaurants and spots to sit and watch the sun set over the river, a fitting way to wrap up a cross-border trip before heading back to your accommodation in Mukdahan town.
- Dinner by the Mekong in Mukdahan β Mekong river fish and Isan food along Samran Chai Khong Road, with a sunset view.
- Ho Kaeo Mukdahan tower β if you still have energy, take in the town and Mekong views from up high (better saved for the next day).
- Keep your bus ticket and checkpoint documents β double-check that your entry and exit stamps are correct for both countries.
