Nan in One Day
Wat Phumin–Old Town–Kad Khuang

Nan's old town is small enough to cover comfortably on foot in a single day. The main temples, the museum, the cafes and the walking street all sit within a few hundred metres of Wat Phumin. This is a morning-to-evening walking plan with the timings spaced out for how things actually run — full, but not a rush.

Nan in One Day Wat Phumin–Old Town–Kad Khuang

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

The nice thing about Nan is how close everything in the old town sits. From Wat Phumin it's only a few minutes' walk to Wat Phra That Chang Kham, the Nan National Museum and Wat Ming Muang. This plan is built for a full day: start early at the temples, stop for coffee mid-morning, have a northern Thai lunch, spend the afternoon at the museum, then finish at Kad Khuang in the evening. If your visit doesn't fall on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, Kad Khuang won't be open — so we've added a backup option too.

Before you set out

Kad Khuang Mueang Nan runs only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings (roughly 5:00–10:00 PM). If you want the walking-street atmosphere, plan your trip to land on one of those days. Wat Phumin is open daily, 8:00 AM–6:00 PM.

Wat Phumin + the temples around Khuang Mueang

08:30

Northern Thai lunch — try khao soi gai or khanom jeen nam ngiao at a spot in town, such as Khao Soi Ton Nam near Wat Ming Mongkol.Khao soi gai around ฿55–70 · many khao soi shops only stay open until about 2 PM, so going before early afternoon is the safer bet

How to fit it all in without wearing out

  • Do the temples in the morning — it's cooler, less crowded, and Wat Phumin, Wat Phra That Chang Kham and the museum all sit around the same Khuang Mueang square within walking distance of each other.
  • Dodge the midday sun — 12:00–1:30 PM is the harshest light, so use it for lunch and a cafe break.
  • Rent a bicycle or pedal trike — if you'd rather not walk, the old town has bike-rental spots, ideal for short hops like these.
  • Time it for the Kad Khuang day — if you want the walking-street atmosphere, plan to stay over on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

If you have a spare half-day

Just outside town

Wat Phra That Chae Haeng

Nan's most revered stupa, with a golden chedi just outside town — about a 10-minute drive, an easy add-on for the afternoon.

Town view

Wat Phra That Khao Noi viewpoint

Climb up for a high view over Nan; the late-afternoon light is lovely and you can see the whole town in one frame.

Souvenirs to take home

For genuine Nan souvenirs, look for Tai Lue flowing-water-pattern weaving, ma fai chin (a local wild fruit) and arabica coffee beans from the hills around town. You'll find them both at Kad Khuang and at the souvenir shops around Khuang Mueang.

FAQ

Is one day enough for Nan?

It's enough for the old town, since Wat Phumin, Wat Phra That Chang Kham, the Nan National Museum, Wat Ming Muang and the cafes are all within walking distance of each other. But if you also want to reach Pua, Doi Phu Kha or the Sky Road (Route 1256), allow at least 2–3 days.

What time does Wat Phumin open, and is it free?

Wat Phumin is open to visitors every day, 8:00 AM–6:00 PM, with free entry. The Pu Man Ya Man (Whispering Lovers) mural is on an interior wall of the ordination hall; mornings are quieter, so it's easier to photograph.

Which days is Kad Khuang Mueang Nan open?

Only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, roughly 5:00–10:00 PM, on the street in front of Wat Phumin. The highlight is buying local food, setting it out on a khantoke tray and eating roadside. On weekdays there's no walking street.

Can you explore Nan's old town on foot, or do you need a car?

It's an easy walk. The main sights in the old town are clustered around the Khuang Mueang square in front of Wat Phumin, only a few hundred metres apart. If you'd rather not walk much, there are bicycles for rent in town. Wat Phra That Chae Haeng and Wat Phra That Khao Noi are outside town, though, so you'll need a car or motorbike for those.

When is the best time of year to visit Nan?

Late rainy season into early winter (about November–February) brings cool, comfortable weather, ideal for walking the temples and Kad Khuang. In the rainy season the rice fields around town and at Pua turn lush and green, but you'll need to allow for rain.
