Nan–Phayao in 3 Days, 2 Nights
Quiet Northern Towns, Easy Driving

Nan and Phayao pair up nicely. Both towns are slow, quiet, and uncrowded — perfect if you want to see the north without fighting for a photo spot. This plan starts in Nan's old town, then takes Highway 1091 over the mountains to Phayao, finishing on the lakeshore at sunset. It's laid out as day-by-day blocks you can lift and follow as is.

Nan–Phayao in 3 Days, 2 Nights Quiet Northern Towns, Easy Driving

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

The backbone of this trip is Highway 1091, which links Nan–Chiang Muan–Phayao over roughly 130 kilometers. The first stretch runs straight, but once you hit the mountains it twists along the ridgelines, with forest and fields on both sides. It's an enjoyable drive — about 3–4 hours without stops. The whole point of this trip, though, is to stop, so set aside the full day for it.

This trip works best if you drive yourself. The sights in both towns are spread out, and there's no direct public transport along Highway 1091. If you're not driving in, you can rent a car at Nan airport — a small car is fine, no need for 4WD.

Day 1 — Nan old town

Day 1

Walk Nan's old town slowly

Morning
Start with a bowl of khao soi or khanom jeen nam ngiao at a spot in town, then walk over to Wat Phumin.Wat Phumin has the only cruciform ordination hall in Thailand. Inside the viharn you'll find the famous 'Pu Man Ya Man' mural — the whispering lovers. Free entry.
Late morning
Carry on to Wat Phra That Chang Kham, the Nan National Museum, and the frangipani tunnel out front of the museum.Everything is within walking distance — Nan's old town is small, and you can do the whole quarter on foot.
Afternoon
Find a cafe in town to sit out the heat. The old town has plenty of coffee shops.Afternoons get hot, so a cafe is a good place to rest your legs before heading out for the evening market.
Evening
Walk the Kad Khuang Mueang Nan walking street in front of Wat Phumin.Open Friday–Sunday, roughly 5:00–10:00 PM, with northern food, khantoke meals, and local souvenirs. Come on a weekday and this market won't be on.

Check the day before you go

Nan's walking street only runs Friday–Sunday. If you want to catch it, plan Day 1 for a Saturday — then your drive over to Phayao lands on a Sunday.

Day 2 — Drive Highway 1091 over to Phayao

Day 2

Leave Nan, head for Phayao

Morning
Pack up, check out, and fill the tank before leaving town, then get onto Highway 1091 toward Ban Luang–Chiang Muan.Gas stations thin out in the mountains, so filling up in Nan first is the easier call.
Late morning
Drive slowly along the ridgeline. There are pull-offs with views along the way where you can stretch and take photos. The mountain stretch is windy, so watch the curves. Anyone prone to car sickness should sit up front and keep an inhaler handy.
Midday
Grab lunch on the road around Chiang Muan or Pong — there are roadside made-to-order spots to pull into.Restaurants are spread apart along here. When you see one that's open, stop — better than holding out.
Afternoon
Reach Phayao town, check into a lakeside stay, then visit Wat Si Khom Kham to pay respects to Phra Chao Ton Luang.Phra Chao Ton Luang is a large, old Lanna Buddha image, and the temple sits right on the lake.
Evening
Stroll along Kwan Phayao waiting for sunset, then find a cafe or waterside restaurant to settle in for a while.Kwan Phayao is one of the north's largest freshwater lakes. In the evening the mountains backlight against the water — a spot locals like to come and sit.

Day 3 — Kwan Phayao, make merit, head home

Day 3

Catch Phayao's highlights before leaving

Morning
Take a rowboat from the pier in front of Wat Si Khom Kham out to Wat Tilok Aram in the middle of the lake.Wat Tilok Aram is an old temple over 500 years old that was once submerged — you have to go by boat. Boats run daily, roughly 7:00 AM–7:00 PM.
Late morning
Drive up to Wat Analayo Thipayaram on Doi Busarakham for a high view over Kwan Phayao. The temple is about 20 kilometers from town, and the road up the hill is steep — use a low gear. At the top there are several Buddha images and a viewpoint over the town.
Midday
Head back down for lunch in Phayao town and pick up a few small souvenirs.Phayao souvenirs include pla som (fermented fish), sun-dried fish from the lake, and local goods.
Afternoon
Set off home. From Phayao you can pick up Highway 1 back toward Bangkok, or carry on easily to Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai.If you still have time and you're flying out of Nan, you'll need to budget for the 1091 drive back today too — don't pack the schedule too tight.

On where to stay

In Nan, staying in the old town makes getting around easiest. In Phayao, pick a lakeside stay so you get the full view morning and evening. Neither town has as many rooms as the bigger tourist towns, so book ahead over long weekends.

How to make this trip work

  • Direction of travel — start in Nan and finish in Phayao. It's easier to head back to Bangkok or carry on to Chiang Rai, since Phayao connects straight to Highway 1.
  • Season — late rainy to early cool season (Nov–Feb) gives you green views and cool air, ideal for Highway 1091. In the rainy season the mountain road gets slippery, so be careful.
  • Time for the 1091 — block out the whole day for Day 2. Don't assume you'll drive three hours and jump straight into sightseeing — the mountain road eats time.
  • If you only have 2 days — trim the Nan old-town day shorter, combine Wat Phumin with the drive in a single day, then save Phayao for day two.
