Pathum Thani for Museum Lovers
NSM · Agriculture · Wat Chedi Hoi

A lot of people think Pathum Thani is just Dream World and shopping malls, but it's actually a cluster of solid museums right next to Bangkok that can keep kids busy all day without getting bored. We've put together a 2-day plan, starting at the National Science Museum at Khlong 5 where you can touch and play with almost everything, then the Royal Agriculture Museum that tells the story of King Rama IX, and finishing at Wat Chedi Hoi in Lat Lum Kaeo — a pagoda genuinely built from thousand-year-old oyster shells.

Pathum Thani is less than an hour's drive from Bangkok, yet it hides several national-level museums that most people overlook. The big draw is how family-friendly it is: kids get to run around, experiment and learn almost without realising it, while adults get a break from the chaos of the city. We've split this plan into 2 days because each place is large with plenty to see — cramming it all into one day leaves you tired and rushing past things. But if you only have a single day, we've got a way to trim it down at the end.

A few things to know before you go

  • Museum closing days — both the NSM and the Agriculture Museum are closed on Mondays. Whatever you do, don't plan to go on a Monday.
  • Getting around — driving yourself is by far the easiest here, since the three spots are in different districts (Khlong Luang and Lat Lum Kaeo) and public transport means several transfers.
  • What to wear — Wat Chedi Hoi is a temple, so dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered. For the museums, wear something comfortable with good walking shoes, because you'll be on your feet a lot.
  • Budget — total entry fees for the whole trip come to roughly 350–400 THB per adult (children, students and seniors get in free or at a discount at several of these spots).

Day 1 — Science at the National Science Museum

Give the whole first day to the National Science Museum (NSM) at Technopolis, Khlong 5, in Khlong Luang district. This isn't just one building — it's a group of several buildings on one site: the Science Museum (the tilted cube tower that's the landmark), the Natural History Museum, the Information Technology Museum, and the Rama IX Museum. There's enough to keep you walking and looking all day.

Day 1

A full day at NSM, Khlong 5

09:30
Arrive at NSM right as it opens, starting with the Science Museum in the cube towerTue–Fri open 09:30–15:00 / Sat–Sun and holidays 09:30–17:00 · closed Mondays
09:45
Work your way up floor by floor, beginning with the basic-science exhibits — almost every spot has something to press and try, and kids love itThis building is all about interactive displays you can touch and play with, not just stand and look at
11:30
Head over to the Natural History Museum to see dinosaur skeletons, animal specimens and taxidermyA highlight for anyone into animals and fossils
12:30
Break for lunch at the on-site cafeteria, or bring your own snacksDining options at Technopolis are limited, so allow a bit of extra time
13:30
Continue to the Rama IX Museum, which covers the world's ecosystems and the King's environmental workThis building is newer with beautiful displays, and takes a fair while to walk through
15:00
Stop by the Information Technology Museum to finish off before heading homeIf you come on a weekday when closing is at 15:00, swap the order and see this building before noon

About admission tickets

NSM sells a combined ticket that gets you into every building, around 300 THB for adults. Students, undergraduates and seniors aged 60+ get in free during many periods. Check nsm.or.th again before you go, since promotions and event schedules change with the season.

Day 2 — The King's farming and the seashell temple

The second day is more about soaking things in and is quieter. In the morning, head to the Royal Agriculture Museum (the museum honouring His Majesty the King) on Phahonyothin Road near Nava Nakorn, Khlong Luang. It tells the story of Thai farming life and King Rama IX's Sufficiency Economy philosophy through indoor exhibits and real outdoor crop plots. In the afternoon, close out the trip at Wat Chedi Hoi.

Day 2

Agriculture Museum → Wat Chedi Hoi

09:00
Arrive at the Royal Agriculture Museum, starting with the indoor exhibits before the sun gets strongOpen Tue–Sun 09:00–20:00 · closed Mondays · adults around 50 THB, children around 30 THB
09:15

15:00
Walk through the temple's shell-fossil museum and feed the fish by the waterThere's a fish-feeding spot and a shady, peaceful atmosphere that kids enjoy
16:00
Pay respects, make merit, then grab some photos before heading backDress modestly, since it's a temple

What there is to see at Wat Chedi Hoi

This temple began when a well was dug around 1980 and an enormous amount of ancient oyster shells turned up underground. The abbot then used the shells to build a pagoda, which is what gave the temple its name. Today, besides the seashell pagoda itself, the temple also has a building displaying shell fossils and old artefacts, showing that this area was once under the sea.

  • The seashell pagoda — built from real oyster shells, with the layers of shell clearly visible; very photogenic
  • Fossil museum — displays of shell remains and the temple's collection
  • Fish-feeding spot — by the water inside the temple, great for bringing kids
  • Merit-making area — releasing fish, offering alms, a calm atmosphere

If you only have one day

If you can only swing a single day, pick one big museum plus Wat Chedi Hoi, because trying to fit all three means you won't make it round and it gets too tiring. With young kids, do NSM for the morning half then continue to Wat Chedi Hoi in the afternoon. If you're after something calmer with good photos, do the Agriculture Museum in the morning and finish at Wat Chedi Hoi.

1 day

The family version

NSM in the morning (touch and experiment) + Wat Chedi Hoi in the afternoon (feed the fish) — kids have fun all day

1 day

The quiet version

Agriculture Museum in the morning (walk the rice plots) + Wat Chedi Hoi in the afternoon — nice photos and a little merit-making

Where to stay

If you want to spread it comfortably over 2 days, staying around Rangsit or Khlong Luang is the most convenient, since it sits in the middle of all the spots and has hotels at a range of price points. You can set off early and reach the museums in good time.

FAQ

How many days do you need for a Pathum Thani museum trip?

If you want to see the NSM, the Agriculture Museum and Wat Chedi Hoi all without rushing, we'd suggest 2 days, since the NSM alone can take almost a full day. But if you only have one day, picking one big museum plus Wat Chedi Hoi in the afternoon is enough.

Which days are the NSM and Agriculture Museum closed?

Both are closed on Mondays. The NSM opens Tue–Fri 09:30–15:00 and Sat–Sun/holidays 09:30–17:00, while the Agriculture Museum opens Tue–Sun 09:00–20:00. Don't plan to go on a Monday.

Is there an entry fee at Wat Chedi Hoi?

There's no entry fee. It's open daily, roughly 06:00–18:00, and you can see the seashell pagoda and the fossil museum for free. Donations are as you wish, and you should dress modestly since it's a temple.

Roughly how much are the total entry fees for the trip?

About 350–400 THB per adult (NSM combined ticket around 300 THB + Agriculture Museum around 50 THB + Wat Chedi Hoi free). Children, students and seniors get in free or at a discount at several spots, which makes this trip great value for families.

Can you do this trip without a car?

You can, but it takes several transfers. The three spots are in different districts (Khlong Luang and Lat Lum Kaeo), so if you're not driving yourself, hiring a car with a driver or taking taxis/ride apps for each leg makes it much easier to manage your time than buses and vans.
