A lot of people assume a trip up north means saving up a big lump sum, but Phayao is the exception where you can have a great time on a thin budget. The town is small enough to walk across, the food is cheap, lakeside rooms are friendly on the wallet, and most of the highlights — Kwan Phayao, Wat Sri Khom Kham, Wat Tilok Aram — barely cost anything to enter. We've set this plan at around 900-1,100 THB per person (not counting the fare to get to Phayao). Here's how it works.
The whole-trip budget, broken down to the baht
These are real numbers based on current room rates and restaurant prices in Phayao, figured per person. Travel as a pair and split the room and it drops even lower.
- 1 night's stay — lakeside guesthouse/homestay from ฿250-400 (split between two people, that's ฿125-200 each)
- 4-5 meals — khao soi, khanom jeen nam ngiao, made-to-order dishes by the lake, ฿250-350 total
- Getting around town — rent a motorbike for ฿250-300 a day, or cycle around the lake for free
- Entry fees — most temples are free; the boat out to Wat Tilok Aram is ฿20-30
- Coffee & snacks — set aside ฿100-150
A money-saver that actually works
If there are two of you, book a single room with a double bed and split it — that pulls your accommodation cost down to a bit over a hundred baht each, leaving you cash for a few more good meals.
Book the activities in your Phayao trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
The cheapest way to get to Phayao
Phayao has no airport, so most budget travelers take a coach from Bangkok. An air-conditioned coach (Sombat Tour or Greenbus, for example) runs about ฿650-1,025 each way depending on the class of bus, and the trip takes around 9-10 hours. Taking an overnight bus saves you a night's accommodation. The other option is to fly into Chiang Rai and continue by minivan or local bus into Phayao, about another 1.5 hours.
- Bangkok-Phayao coach — from Mo Chit 2, around ฿650-1,025, a 9-10 hr ride
- Fly to Chiang Rai + transfer — faster but the airfare costs more; worth it if you catch a cheap flight
- Around Phayao — rent a motorbike for ฿250-300 a day; it's by far the easiest way up the hill to Wat Analayo

Cheap eats you shouldn't skip
Phayao eats well on a budget of mere tens of baht. Local dishes are easy to find and friendly on the wallet — here are the spots and dishes that give the best value if you're traveling light on cash.
Khao Soi Saeng Phian (Tha Kwan)
A khao soi shop going back more than 40 years near Tha Kwan; soft noodles, a rich curry broth, with chicken, beef, and khanom jeen / nam ngiao noodles all on the menu.
Khanom Jeen Nam Ngiao
A morning favorite up north — a well-rounded nam ngiao broth over rice noodles, eaten with pork crackling and fresh greens. A filling meal for tens of baht, found all over town.
Lakeside made-to-order (Chid Lom Chom Kwan)
A restaurant right on the lake with northern and Isan dishes — gaeng hang lay, duck larb, tom yum fish. Order to share among a group and it's even better value, with a lake view for free.
Khao Soi Him Khong (Dok Kham Tai)
Over on the Dok Kham Tai side, across from the municipal office; several styles of khao soi — chicken, beef, pork, meatball — plus other northern dishes. Worth a stop if you're passing through.
Local souvenirs
Khaep mu (pork crackling), sai ua sausage, chili dips, and pla som (fermented fish) from the lake — take them home as gifts for just a few tens of baht, found at the markets in town.
Eating well on a budget
Traveling in a group? Order 3-4 shared dishes in the middle of the table and add extra steamed rice — it's cheaper than everyone ordering their own single plate, and you get to try more dishes in one meal.
Cheap lakeside stays
Part of Phayao's charm is that lakeside rooms are still not pricey. Plenty of guesthouses and homestays start at just over 200 THB a night, and some rooms have big windows looking out over the lake and the mountains.
In-town guesthouse / B&B
Small, clean rooms from ฿250-300 a night, within walking distance of the lake and the restaurants. Good for backpackers staying a single night.
Lakeside homestay
A relaxed, friendly feel; some include breakfast, and you wake up to the lake view. Still within budget.
Minimalist stay near the lake
Clean, simple rooms with double-bed and family options — split it among a few people and it gets even cheaper.
