On the Trail of Krai Thong & Chalawan
Chalawan Cave and Bueng Si Fai in One Day

Phichit is the real city of Chalawan, birthplace of the Krai Thong legend that King Rama II turned into a lakhon nok stage play. The story still feels tangible across the whole town — from the cave mouth believed to be the crocodile king's palace, to the giant Chalawan statue out in the middle of a lake. This plan strings the legend's landmarks into an easy single day, complete with timings, prices and real meals around town.

On the Trail of Krai Thong & Chalawan Chalawan Cave and Bueng Si Fai in One Day

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

If you grew up with the tale of Krai Thong and Chalawan, or caught any TV version of it, coming to Phichit feels like walking onto the actual set. The story begins at Ban Dong Setthi village on the edge of Phichit, when the crocodile king Chalawan dragged the merchant's daughter Tabhae Thong down to his underwater palace, forcing Krai Thong to descend with his seven-metal spear to defeat him. Locals believe the tale has roots in something real, and they have pinned the legend to spots all around town.

The good news is that all the main stops sit within Mueang district and are 10 to 15 minutes apart by car. One day is genuinely enough without rushing. This plan starts a little late, heads out as the harsh sun softens, and closes with sunset at Bueng Si Fai — the prettiest moment of the day.

Morning — Into Chalawan's Palace at the Old City Park

The heart of the trip is the Phichit Old City Park on the Phichit–Wang Chik road, about 7 km from the town centre. This is believed to be the site of the original city of Phichit — you can still see the ancient city wall and moat — and it is home to Chalawan Cave and Wat Tham Chalawan. It's open daily roughly 08:00–18:00 and entry is free. The same grounds hold the city pillar shrine and shady old trees, so it's an easy place to wander and take photos.

Day 1

Morning · Tracing Chalawan Cave

09:00
Leave your in-town hotel and drive to the Phichit Old City ParkAbout 15–20 minutes from the centre. Smooth road, easy parking, free entry.
09:30
Chalawan Cave + Wat Tham ChalawanThe highlight at the cave mouth is the statue of Krai Thong battling Chalawan. The original cave ran deep but a landslide buried it, so only a small opening remains at the entrance.
10:15
Walk the ancient city wall and moatPlenty of shade, good for photos, and a chance to hear the lore of old Phichit.
10:45
Stop at the Phichit City Pillar Shrine to pay respects to Phraya KotrabongBy legend the founder of Phichit. It's a two-storey building you can go up into to pay respects.

Read this before you go

The real Chalawan Cave isn't the huge, dramatic cavern many people picture. The draw is the legend and the statue at the cave mouth more than the cave itself. Set your expectations right from the start and you'll enjoy it far more. Bring an umbrella or hat too, because the open plaza gets fairly harsh sun by late morning.

Lunch — Eating in Phichit Town

Drive back into town for lunch. The dish locals are most proud of is "dangling-leg" boat noodles by the Nan River, where you sit with your legs hanging over the bank while you eat, alongside fresh Nan River fish dishes. For something sweet to take with you before moving on, look for Tha Khoi pomelo, Phichit's famous variety with sweet, juicy flesh.

Afternoon to Evening — Bueng Si Fai, the Heart of Chalawan's City

Bueng Si Fai is a large freshwater lake in the middle of town and a landmark that has been given a full makeover in the last few years, going from a run-down lake to a living public park where locals come to exercise and unwind every evening. The legend-themed highlight is the Chalawan statue, a giant crocodile around 38 metres long with a meeting room built inside it, plus the Royal Jubilee Freshwater Aquarium, a nine-pointed-star building reaching out over the water that gathers more than 20 species of freshwater fish.

Day 1

Afternoon to Evening · Closing the Trip at Bueng Si Fai

13:30
Arrive at Bueng Si Fai and shoot photos with the giant Chalawan statueThe crocodile is enormous and is the city's signature check-in spot — easy to fit in the frame.
14:00
Visit the Royal Jubilee Freshwater AquariumA nine-pointed-star building out over the water, cool inside and perfect for ducking out of the afternoon heat. See more than 20 species of Nan River freshwater fish.
15:30
Rent a bike and ride around the lakeRentals run about 100–200 THB. The cycling loop around the grounds is roughly 10 km, with cool breezes and open views.
17:30
Find a spot by the water and wait for sunsetIn the evening the water catches the light — this is when Bueng Si Fai looks its best, and plenty of locals come to sit and relax.
18:30
Head back into town for dinnerThe evening market and in-town restaurants are a quick trip away, ready to wrap up the day.

A tip on timing

If you want an easy ride around the lake, start after about 3 pm when the sun softens, because midday the lake is wide open and very hot. Save the aquarium for late afternoon — it's much cooler inside than out.

More of the Legend — Extra Stops If You Have Time

If you start earlier or move quickly, there are more spots tied to Phichit's lore you can add, slotting them in along the way as your pace allows.

  • Wat Tha Luang (a royal monastery) — in the centre of town by the Nan River, home to Luang Pho Phet, an old Chiang Saen-style seated Buddha in the subduing-Mara posture and a revered image of Phichit. Stop in to pay respects before or after lunch.
  • Wat Nakhon Chum — an old temple near the Old City Park, tied to the tale of a monk who once lit candles to explore Chalawan Cave in the past.
  • The Nan riverfront in town — stroll along the levee in the evening to see the river-town life that opens the Krai Thong legend.

A Quick Recap of the Legend Before You Set Off

The Krai Thong legend tells of the crocodile king Chalawan, lord of the underwater realm, who became infatuated with the beauty of Tabhae Thong, daughter of a Phichit merchant, and carried her off to his underwater cave — even though he already had crocodile wives in Wimala and Lueam Lai Wan. The merchant put out a call for someone to defeat him, until Krai Thong, a skilled crocodile hunter, volunteered to go down, using a candle to part the water and a seven-metal spear to defeat Chalawan and bring Tabhae Thong back to town. King Rama II later turned the story into a lakhon nok stage play, making it a work of literature known across all of Thailand.

FAQ

Can you visit Chalawan Cave and Bueng Si Fai in a single day?

Easily. Both main stops are in Phichit's Mueang district and are about 10–15 minutes apart by car. Start a bit late and close with sunset at Bueng Si Fai and the timing works out just right, no rushing needed.

Is there an entry fee for Chalawan Cave, and what are the hours?

Wat Tham Chalawan in the Phichit Old City Park is free to enter and open daily roughly 08:00–18:00. The original cave ran deep, but a landslide has buried it down to a small opening. The main photo spot is the statue of Krai Thong fighting Chalawan at the cave mouth.

Are there bikes to rent at Bueng Si Fai, and how much?

Yes, bike rentals run about 100–200 THB. The loop around the lake and cycling grounds is roughly 10 km. I'd ride in the late afternoon to evening when the sun is softer and there's a cool breeze.

What time of day does Bueng Si Fai look best?

The evening just before sunset is the prettiest — the water catches the light, the air cools, and lots of locals come to relax and exercise. Midday the lake is wide open and hot, so that's a better time to duck into the aquarium.

How does the Krai Thong and Chalawan legend connect to Phichit?

Krai Thong comes from a Phichit folk tale about Krai Thong defeating the crocodile king Chalawan to rescue Tabhae Thong. King Rama II later turned it into a lakhon nok stage play, which is why Phichit earned the nickname "city of Chalawan" and has pinned the legend to spots all around town.
