If you grew up with the tale of Krai Thong and Chalawan, or caught any TV version of it, coming to Phichit feels like walking onto the actual set. The story begins at Ban Dong Setthi village on the edge of Phichit, when the crocodile king Chalawan dragged the merchant's daughter Tabhae Thong down to his underwater palace, forcing Krai Thong to descend with his seven-metal spear to defeat him. Locals believe the tale has roots in something real, and they have pinned the legend to spots all around town.
The good news is that all the main stops sit within Mueang district and are 10 to 15 minutes apart by car. One day is genuinely enough without rushing. This plan starts a little late, heads out as the harsh sun softens, and closes with sunset at Bueng Si Fai — the prettiest moment of the day.
Morning — Into Chalawan's Palace at the Old City Park
The heart of the trip is the Phichit Old City Park on the Phichit–Wang Chik road, about 7 km from the town centre. This is believed to be the site of the original city of Phichit — you can still see the ancient city wall and moat — and it is home to Chalawan Cave and Wat Tham Chalawan. It's open daily roughly 08:00–18:00 and entry is free. The same grounds hold the city pillar shrine and shady old trees, so it's an easy place to wander and take photos.
Morning · Tracing Chalawan Cave
Read this before you go
The real Chalawan Cave isn't the huge, dramatic cavern many people picture. The draw is the legend and the statue at the cave mouth more than the cave itself. Set your expectations right from the start and you'll enjoy it far more. Bring an umbrella or hat too, because the open plaza gets fairly harsh sun by late morning.
Book the activities in your Phichit trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Lunch — Eating in Phichit Town
Drive back into town for lunch. The dish locals are most proud of is "dangling-leg" boat noodles by the Nan River, where you sit with your legs hanging over the bank while you eat, alongside fresh Nan River fish dishes. For something sweet to take with you before moving on, look for Tha Khoi pomelo, Phichit's famous variety with sweet, juicy flesh.
Dangling-Leg Boat Noodles by the Nan River
Sit with your legs over the bank eating boat noodles. The stalls cluster around the bridges in town, with a proper river-town feel.
Regional FoodNan River Fish Restaurants
Fresh freshwater fish done fried, steamed or in soups — great for a long, relaxed lunch. Pick a riverside spot for the atmosphere.
Afternoon to Evening — Bueng Si Fai, the Heart of Chalawan's City
Bueng Si Fai is a large freshwater lake in the middle of town and a landmark that has been given a full makeover in the last few years, going from a run-down lake to a living public park where locals come to exercise and unwind every evening. The legend-themed highlight is the Chalawan statue, a giant crocodile around 38 metres long with a meeting room built inside it, plus the Royal Jubilee Freshwater Aquarium, a nine-pointed-star building reaching out over the water that gathers more than 20 species of freshwater fish.

A tip on timing
If you want an easy ride around the lake, start after about 3 pm when the sun softens, because midday the lake is wide open and very hot. Save the aquarium for late afternoon — it's much cooler inside than out.
More of the Legend — Extra Stops If You Have Time
If you start earlier or move quickly, there are more spots tied to Phichit's lore you can add, slotting them in along the way as your pace allows.
- Wat Tha Luang (a royal monastery) — in the centre of town by the Nan River, home to Luang Pho Phet, an old Chiang Saen-style seated Buddha in the subduing-Mara posture and a revered image of Phichit. Stop in to pay respects before or after lunch.
- Wat Nakhon Chum — an old temple near the Old City Park, tied to the tale of a monk who once lit candles to explore Chalawan Cave in the past.
- The Nan riverfront in town — stroll along the levee in the evening to see the river-town life that opens the Krai Thong legend.
A Quick Recap of the Legend Before You Set Off
The Krai Thong legend tells of the crocodile king Chalawan, lord of the underwater realm, who became infatuated with the beauty of Tabhae Thong, daughter of a Phichit merchant, and carried her off to his underwater cave — even though he already had crocodile wives in Wimala and Lueam Lai Wan. The merchant put out a call for someone to defeat him, until Krai Thong, a skilled crocodile hunter, volunteered to go down, using a candle to part the water and a seven-metal spear to defeat Chalawan and bring Tabhae Thong back to town. King Rama II later turned the story into a lakhon nok stage play, making it a work of literature known across all of Thailand.
