When you take little kids to the beach, the two things you worry about most are strong waves and harsh midday sun. Rayong handles both well: several mainland beaches slope gently with calm water, and there are indoor options like the aquarium to duck out of the heat at noon. This plan keeps day one light so everyone can settle in, sends you out to Koh Samet on day two, then leaves the last day for souvenirs before you head home.
Plan before you go
- Best season — Nov–Apr brings clear water and small waves, the best time to let kids swim. During the rainy season the surf picks up, so always check the beach warning flags.
- Getting around — A private car is by far the easiest for families with a car seat and a lot of kids' gear. From Bangkok it's about a 3-hour drive via the motorway to Rayong town.
- Where to stay — Base yourself around Mae Ramphueng Beach or Ban Phe to be close to both the aquarium and the pier for Koh Samet, which cuts down the kids' time in the car.
- What to pack — Kids' sunscreen, hats, swim rings, non-slip water shoes, and a spare set of clothes in case they get soaked.

Tips for bringing kids to Rayong
The aquarium is closed Monday–Tuesday, so if your trip lands on the start of the week, swap in the indoor activity on a day it's open — or do Ban Phe Market instead and save the aquarium for a day it's actually running.
Why Rayong works for little kids
Getting thereClose, short drive
About 3 hours from Bangkok, so the kids aren't stuck in the car long enough to melt down, with easy gas-station bathroom stops along the way
SafetyGentle, shallow beaches
Mae Ramphueng and Sai Kaew are easy to wade into with few rocks, though you should still watch the warning flags when the surf is up
IndoorIndoor options too
The air-conditioned aquarium is there to escape the midday sun, so you can alternate with outdoor time instead of baking all day
One thing worth saying plainly: weekends and long holidays get very crowded, both the boats to Koh Samet and Sai Kaew Beach itself. If you can go on a weekday, it's a lot more relaxed — shorter ferry lines and less packed sand, which is much easier when you're watching small kids.
