Katathani Phuket Beach Resort — the landlord of Kata Noi Beach, walking you from room to sand since 1984

On an island where new resorts open and compete every year, Katathani Phuket Beach Resort took a different path — it dug in on the same beach back in November 1984, starting with 44 bungalows, and has grown until it now fronts almost the entire 800 metres of Kata Noi Beach · The resort is split into three wings — Thani Wing, right on the sand so you walk from your room to the water, Bhuri Wing on the garden side across a small road, and the new Vhari Waterpark Wing that opened in late 2025 with its own water park · There are six swimming pools, seaside restaurants, a two-storey kids' club and a spa · Rates start from approx. ฿4,900/night in low season · Rated 8.6 from 1,799 reviews on Booking.com

Our Full Review

The first thing to understand about this place is that a location like this can't be built any more · Kata Noi is a small bay about 800 metres long, just south of the main Kata Beach, with a headland dividing the two — which keeps the noise and bustle of the Kata–Karon strip from ever reaching it · The water is clearer, the sand finer, and there are noticeably fewer people than on the main beach · Katathani has held this spot since the days when the road was still red dirt, and slowly expanded until its buildings and gardens run parallel to almost the whole beach · The result is an experience most Phuket hotels genuinely can't offer — open your door in the Thani Wing, walk a few dozen steps through the coconut garden, and you're on the sand, no main road to cross, no shuttle to catch · In the early morning, before the day-trippers arrive, the beach belongs almost entirely to resort guests — the very thing hundreds of reviews name as the reason they keep coming back

The roughly 500 rooms are spread across three wings that feel distinctly different · Thani Wing is the beachfront building on the sea side — rooms start at the Junior Suite (45–50 sqm), every one with a balcony and a partial or full sea view depending on position, rising to the 75 sqm Grand Suite, the 110 sqm Family Suite for larger families, and the Royal Thani Suite closest to the water · Bhuri Wing sits on the garden side across a small road, with Deluxe and Grand Deluxe rooms (40–50 sqm) that are more recently refreshed and gentler on price, in exchange for a one-minute walk across the road to the beach · And the newcomer, the Vhari Waterpark Wing that opened in December 2025, is aimed squarely at families — from the 55 sqm Family Room with a pull-out bed for children up to the two-bedroom, two-bathroom Teen Suite of 80–90 sqm · The overall look is contemporary Thai — pale wood, fretwork detail, bright and easy on the eye — and reviews give both cleanliness and comfort 8.9, which is strong for a resort turning forty

A Junior Suite at Katathani Phuket Beach Resort, its balcony open to coconut palms and the Kata Noi sea

"Woke up, opened the curtains to the sea, walked down and the beach was still empty; the kids ran around the water park all afternoon while the grown-ups read by the pool — three years running now and still not bored, like the place was built for our family."

The common areas are why so many families spend the whole day inside the resort without feeling they missed anything · There are six swimming pools spread across the grounds — the Andaman and Kata Noi pools on the beach side for easy lounging, the Beach Club pool for a quieter corner, and the Bhuri-side pool that's almost always emptier · The new addition that has changed the resort most is the Aqua Jungle water park at the Vhari Wing — slides and splash zones pitched at several age groups, paired with the two-storey Club Tully kids' club laid out as activity zones so children can play at their own pace — families who used to head out to a water park elsewhere can now do it all on site · For grown-ups there's Tew Son Spa with Thai treatments in a quiet setting, tennis courts, a fitness room and beach activities that rotate through the week · The fair caveat is that all of this comes with a genuinely large resort — walking from one end to the other takes a while, and anyone in a room far from the lobby will feel it

Dining is a category where the reviews are steadily positive · Chom Talay, the main seaside restaurant, handles the breakfast buffet (6:00–10:30 AM), which large numbers of guests praise consistently for variety and freshness — Thai, Western and Japanese corners, a bakery and seasonal fruit, eaten looking out at the sea · In the evening it switches to a rotating themed dinner buffet · Fisherman's Wharf is the most-booked restaurant — grilled seafood served on the sand, open 11:00 AM–6:00 PM, then carrying on with sunset drinks at what is one of the best spots on Kata Noi to watch the light fade · There's also the Seaside Restaurant, the Tree House Restaurant and several poolside bars, enough to change the scene every night of the trip without repeating yourself · Food prices inside the resort run above the shops outside, as you'd expect of a five-star hotel — luckily a walk up the hill toward Kata adds more local restaurants, even if the choices right by the resort are few

There are four things to tell you plainly · One — value for money is its lowest score (8.1); the main gripe isn't the room rate but the on-site extras — food, drinks and various services that add up and make the trip pricier than planned · Two — a forty-year-old resort inevitably has older and newer zones side by side; the renovated rooms look good and current, but some rooms in zones still waiting their turn show wear, and a few reviews mention a musty smell as you'd get in any seaside building — if this matters to you, request a newly renovated zone when booking · Three — this is a full-blown family resort, and during school holidays and long weekends there really are a lot of children, both at the pools and at breakfast; anyone wanting adults-only quiet will find that The Shore at Katathani, the sister property right next door that admits guests aged 12 and up, fits that picture better · Four — Kata Noi is very quiet at night, with few restaurants or bars outside the resort, so anyone wanting nightlife has to drive to Kata or Patong — a drawback for some, but for this resort's regulars, exactly the reason they chose it

The long sweep of Kata Noi Beach, white sand and clear water, in front of Katathani resort in Phuket

So who is Katathani for? · Most clearly, families of every size — the water park, the two-storey kids' club, family rooms up to 110 sqm, shallow pools for toddlers, and a beach that's calm before high season have kept this on Phuket's family-resort shortlist for years · Couples who want a beautiful beach without going far from civilisation also fit — pick a Junior Suite Oceanfront in the Thani Wing and the whole trip is sea, balcony and the sound of the waves, while Patong is still only about 25 minutes away · Guests staying several nights benefit from a resort big enough to offer variety without repetition, across six pools and many restaurants · Who should look elsewhere: party travellers who want to walk out of the hotel straight into a bar (Patong suits that better), honeymooners who want privacy without the sound of children (The Shore next door is the answer), and budget travellers who plan to be out sightseeing all day and would pay for facilities they barely use

Tips distilled from a long read through real guest reviews · Matching the wing to your trip is the biggest decision — as a couple take Thani on the sea side; as a family with young kids take Vhari near the water park; on a budget take Bhuri and accept a one-minute walk across the road · Book low season (May–October), when rates drop clearly from peak, which climbs close to double — in exchange for surf and the occasional warning flag; there's always a pool for that · Note a request for a high floor or a newly renovated zone in your booking — it works more often than asking at the desk · Reserve a sunset table at Fisherman's Wharf on your first night, as the front-row seats always go first · And if you plan to explore the island, compare car hire against Grab from the start — Promthep Cape, the windmill viewpoint and Nai Harn Beach are all within about half an hour, and more fun to drive yourself

Honest Take
🎯
This place is a great fit if...
Katathani fits best with families and couples who want a beautiful, quiet beach without fleeing to the far end of the island — a beachfront position along the whole of Kata Noi that can't be built any more, a brand-new water park and kids' club, six pools, and a breakfast buffet that draws steady praise · What you have to accept is the on-site extras that make the trip pricier than expected, some rooms in zones still awaiting renovation, and a family atmosphere where children's voices are part of the trip — pick the right wing for your style and this becomes a beach holiday you'll return to again and again
💡 Check before you book
These 3 points matter to some travellers — make sure they fit your trip (we have added the workaround).
  • 💡If you want adults-only quiet with no children around — this is a full-blown family resort, and school holidays really are busy with kids → The Shore at Katathani right next door admits guests 12 and up and fits that picture better
  • 💡If you want nightlife and restaurants within walking distance — Kata Noi is very quiet after sunset, with only a handful of places outside the resort → choose the main Kata area or Patong instead
  • 💡If you're on a budget and plan to be out sightseeing all day — the rate you pay bundles in facilities you may barely use → a 3–4 star hotel in the Kata–Karon area gives you a similar location for much less

Frequently Asked Questions — Katathani Phuket Beach Resort

Is Katathani really on the beach · what is Kata Noi like?
Yes, literally — the Thani Wing sits right on Kata Noi Beach, a few dozen steps through the garden to the sand, while the Bhuri Wing is on the garden side across a small road, about a minute away · Kata Noi runs roughly 800 metres and is shielded from the main Kata Beach by a headland, which keeps it quieter, clearer and clearly less crowded — the resort fronts almost the whole beach, and in the early morning the sand is practically the guests' own
Which wing should I choose — Thani, Bhuri or Vhari?
Thani Wing = on the beach, sea views, best for couples and anyone here mainly for the sea (Junior Suite 45–50 sqm and up) · Bhuri Wing = on the garden side across a small road, more recently refreshed rooms, the gentlest prices, good for budgets that don't mind a one-minute walk · Vhari Waterpark Wing (opened Dec 2025) = the newest, next to the water park and kids' club, with rooms designed for families, from the 55 sqm Family Room to the two-bedroom Teen Suite at 90 sqm
What do rates start at · when is best value?
In low season (May–October) a Bhuri-wing Deluxe starts from approx. ฿4,900/night · a sea-side Junior Suite runs around ฿6,500 and a front-row Oceanfront room around ฿8,500 · In peak season (Nov–Feb) rates climb close to double · Low season is clearly the best value — in exchange for surf and warning flags on some days, which the six pools help make up for
Is it good for kids · what's the water park like?
This is the resort's biggest strength — the Aqua Jungle water park at the Vhari Wing (opened late 2025) has slides and splash zones for several age groups · Club Tully is a two-storey kids' club where children play at their own pace · add a children's pool, a kids' menu and family rooms up to 110 sqm · The thing to know is that school holidays and long weekends really are busy with children across the resort — for quiet, avoid those dates or look at The Shore, which admits only guests aged 12 and up
What are the most commonly mentioned downsides?
Three main ones · High on-site extras — resort food and drinks carry five-star prices, and the 8.1 value score is the lowest of every category · Some rooms still await renovation — at a 40-year-old resort the older zones show wear, so ask for a newer zone when booking · Quiet nights — few places outside the resort, so nightlife means a drive to Kata or Patong, which you'll see as a plus or a minus depending on your style
How do I get there from the airport · is it easy to reach other sights?
Phuket Airport is about 45 km away, roughly 1 hr 15 min — the easiest option is the hotel's transfer or a ride-hailing app · From the resort, Kata Beach is ~5 minutes, Karon Viewpoint ~7 minutes and Patong ~25 minutes · You're well placed for the south of the island — Nai Harn Beach, the windmill viewpoint and Promthep Cape are all within about half an hour · The resort also arranges car hire and tours on site
