Roi Et for Photographers
2 Days of Instagram-Worthy Angles

Roi Et is more fun to photograph than you'd expect. You get a city-view tower with a glass floor, a gold chedi on a hilltop, rice fields that stretch to the horizon, and a white-sand beach right in the middle of Isan. This plan times each stop to catch the best light, and a private car or rental is the smoothest way to get around since a few spots sit well outside town.

Before you start, here's the honest picture: Roi Et's photo spots are spread out. The Roi Et Tower and Bueng Phlan Chai are right in the city, but Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol is in Nong Phok district, about 80 km from town. Bueng Kluea is in Selaphum district, and Thung Kula Ronghai sits in the south of the province. So this plan pairs up the spots that lie in the same direction on the same day, to avoid wasting time driving back and forth.

The 2-day plan at a glance

  • Day 1 — city stops: Roi Et Tower 101 (the glass-floor Sky Walk) plus Bueng Phlan Chai in the city center, shooting from morning through sunset
  • Day 2 — out-of-town stops: Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol in the morning, then on to Thung Kula Ronghai and Bueng Kluea, finishing with sunset by the beach
  • What to pack: a power bank, a lens cloth, and sunglasses, since many spots are open and sunny through midday

Day 1 — the best angles in central Roi Et

Day 1

Roi Et Tower 101 + Bueng Phlan Chai

09:00
Start the day at Roi Et Tower 101 as your first stopThe tower is open 09:00–18:00, admission 50 THB (40 THB for students). Come at opening when the crowds are still thin and shooting is easier than in the afternoon.
09:30
Head up to the 360-degree viewpoint on floor 31, then the flower tunnel on floor 32Floor 31 gives you a view over Roi Et in every direction with Bueng Phlan Chai below. The flower tunnel on floor 32 is an easy angle to frame, with bright colors that suit your feed.
10:15
Step onto the glass-floor Sky Walk on floor 34The tower's highlight: a clear glass floor you can see straight through. Shoot looking down with your feet floating for a real sense of height. If you're scared of heights, take it slow — no need to rush.
11:00
Try the zip line from the tower across to the island in Bueng Phlan ChaiThe zip line costs 101 THB and runs about 350 meters. It's both an activity and a ready-made clip for social. If it's not your thing, walk over and sit at the cafe in the tower instead.
12:00
Break for lunch in town and dodge the harsh midday sunMidday light is hard and blows out outdoor shots. Take a longer break, then head back out in the late afternoon for softer light.
16:00
Stroll around Bueng Phlan Chai in the city centerThe island in the middle has the Constitution Monument and a flower garden — the city's central landmark. There are bridge angles, waterside angles, and naga statues to shoot at several spots.
18:00
Wait for the evening light and the lakeside lightsAt sunset the water reflects an orange glow, and once it's dark the tower lights up. You can frame the tower and the lake together in one shot.

The angle people often miss

If you want the whole tower in frame, step back and shoot from the Bueng Phlan Chai side — you'll catch both the tower and its reflection in the water, an angle you can't get from the tower itself.

Day 2 — hilltop chedi, rice fields, and an Isan beach

Day two is a driving day outside town. Set off early, because Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol is far out and up on a hill — the earlier you go, the better the air and the clearer the sky. Work your way down toward Thung Kula and Bueng Kluea through midday, and save the sunset as the closing shot of the trip.

Day 2

Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol + Thung Kula + Bueng Kluea

07:30
Leave the city heading for Nong Phok districtIt's about 80 km and takes roughly an hour and a half. Fill up the tank before you go, since gas stations are scarce on the climb up the hill.
09:00
Arrive at Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol, Wat Pha Nam Thip Thep Prasit WanaramOpen 08:00–18:00. The white-and-gold chedi stands 101 meters tall on a hilltop — shoot looking up to catch the golden spire against the sky. Dress modestly, as it's a place for meditation practice.
10:00
Go inside the chedi and up to the hilltop viewpointThere are several floors inside with detailed stucco work and murals that frame easily. Outside you get a wide view of forest and hills. Around 1–2 hours is about right.
12:30
Head down the hill and stop for lunch on the way to Thung KulaThung Kula Ronghai is in the south of the province. Plan a route that passes a restaurant along the way, since food is hard to find out in the fields.
15:00
Shoot Thung Kula RonghaiA plain that stretches to the horizon. If you come during the green-rice season (roughly July–September) or the golden-rice season (November), you'll get beautiful field colors. Shoot low to catch the rice ears cutting across the skyline.
16:30
Move on to Bueng Kluea, the Isan sea, in Selaphum districtA large freshwater lake with a white-sand beach nearly 1 km long, open until around 18:00. Frame the beach right and it really does look like a sea in the middle of Isan.
17:45
Close the trip with sunset by Bueng KlueaIn the evening the golden light on the water is gorgeous. Sit at a floating raft restaurant on the water, order some Isan food, and take it in — the perfect closing shot for your feed.

On the timing of light

Open spots like Thung Kula and Bueng Kluea look their best during golden hour (around 16:30–18:00). Avoid midday, when the sun is harsh and the shadows are hard. The hilltop chedi is best in the morning with a clear sky. Order your stops this way and you'll get good light everywhere.

Which season is best for photos in Roi Et

  • Rainy season (Jul–Sep): Thung Kula turns fresh green rice and the sky clears after rain, but check the forecast — shooting in the rain is tough
  • Late rains, early cool season (Oct–Nov): the fields start turning gold and the weather is comfortable — this is when the field shots look their best
  • Cool season (Dec–Feb): clear skies and cool air, ideal for walking and shooting in the city and spending the whole day at the Roi Et Tower
  • Hot season (Mar–May): the sun is strong and midday outdoor shots blow out, so focus on mornings and evenings instead

How to capture a lot in 2 days

Timing

Start early every day

Popular spots like the tower and the chedi are quiet in the morning, so you get fewer people in frame and softer light.

Gear

Bring a wide-angle lens

Thung Kula, Bueng Kluea, and the view from the tower are all wide scenes — a wide angle captures the mood better than a regular phone.

Planning

Leave time for driving

The out-of-town spots are tens of kilometers apart, so allow time to travel and park. Don't pack the schedule too tight.

FAQ

How many days do you need for a photo trip in Roi Et?

Two days is about right if you want both the in-town and out-of-town spots. Day one covers Roi Et Tower 101 and Bueng Phlan Chai in the city center, and day two is a drive out to Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol, Thung Kula Ronghai, and Bueng Kluea. If you really only have one day, focus on the tower and Bueng Phlan Chai, which are close together.

How much is admission to Roi Et Tower 101, and what hours is it open?

It's open daily 09:00–18:00. Admission is 50 THB for adults and 40 THB for students, with discounts for young children and seniors. If you want to try the zip line over to the island in Bueng Phlan Chai, it's an extra 101 THB.

Is Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol far from the city?

It's at Wat Pha Nam Thip Thep Prasit Wanaram in Nong Phok district, about 80 km from central Roi Et — roughly an hour and a half by car. It's open 08:00–18:00. Go in the morning, since it's up on a hill and the sky is clearer and the air better then.

When is the best time to photograph Thung Kula Ronghai?

The rainy season, around July to September, is fresh green rice, while the late rains and early cool season, around October to November, is when the fields turn gold — that's when the field shots look their best. Shoot during golden hour in the evening for softer light.

How do you visit Bueng Kluea for the best photos?

Bueng Kluea, the Isan sea, is in Selaphum district and has a white-sand beach nearly 1 km long, open until around 18:00. Shoot the beach in the evening and it looks like a real sea, then wait for sunset over the water. There are floating Isan raft restaurants where you can sit, eat, and enjoy the view.
