Before the day-by-day details, here's the big picture. Roi Et's main merit-making temples fall into two clear zones. The first is Wat Pha Nam Thip Thep Prasit Wararam in Nong Phok district, home to the Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol, around 60–80 km from the city — about an hour to an hour and a half by car. The other zone is the temples within the municipal area: Wat Burapha Phiram, Wat Klang Ming Mueang, and Wat Sa Thong, all close together and just a few minutes apart on foot or by car. Because the distances are so different, we don't recommend cramming every temple into one day.
Why split it into 2 days
A lot of people who come to Roi Et for a single day try to do the Chai Mongkol chedi in the morning and rush back to the in-town temples in the afternoon. They end up driving all day until they're exhausted, with no time to actually sit and take in the atmosphere up on the hill. The final stretch of road up the hill is fairly winding, so you can't drive fast. If you can stay a night in Roi Et and split it across two days, it's far more comfortable and you get the full view from the chedi.
Getting-around tip
The Chai Mongkol chedi is far out and public transport isn't convenient. If you don't have your own car, it's better to hire a car with a driver or charter a vehicle for the round trip from town — that works out better value than a taxi by the trip, and a local driver knows the hill road well.

What's special about Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol
This chedi sits on a hilltop within Wat Pha Nam Thip Thep Prasit Wararam. Its architecture blends Phra Pathom Chedi with Phra That Phanom — white and gold set against the sky and surrounding forest, which looks striking from below. It measures 101 m on every side, equal in width, length, and height, and was built on a 101-rai plot, echoing the city's name (Roi Et means "one hundred and one"). Each level inside has Buddha images and murals to walk through, while the top level enshrines the Buddha relics and is the best viewpoint.
- Location — Pha Nam Yoi sub-district, Nong Phok district, around 60–80 km from the city, 1–1.5 hr by car.
- Entry fee — Free; donations as you wish, with collection boxes to support the temple.
- Dress code — It's a temple and a sacred site, so dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered.
- Best time — Clear mornings give long views; in the cool season the air on the hill is especially pleasant.

In-town temples you shouldn't miss
Wat Burapha Phiram
Home to Luang Pho Yai, the tall standing Buddha in the blessing pose that's a Roi Et landmark. You can see it from far off and walk up to pay respects at the base.
Wat Klang Ming Mueang
An old temple in the city center enshrining Phra Phuttha Ming Mueang Mongkol, the city Buddha. Lovely, shady Isan architecture.
Wat Sa Thong
Home to Luang Pho Phra Sangkajai, a revered city Buddha people pray to for fortune and good trade. It's in town, an easy continuation from the other temples.
Getting ready for merit-making
- Dress modestly — Every temple is a sacred site: sleeved tops, knee-covering trousers or skirts, and shoes off where required.
- Bring flowers, incense, and candles — There are offering stalls in front of the main temples at reasonable prices; give as much as you can.
- Pack water and an umbrella — Especially at the Chai Mongkol chedi, where you walk in the open sun, and the Isan sun is strong at midday.
- Allow time for the hill road — The last stretch before Wat Pha Nam Thip is winding and uphill; drive slowly and watch for oncoming traffic.
Can you do it in a single day?
If you really only have one day, you'll have to choose. If you want the Chai Mongkol chedi, give the whole day to Nong Phok and skip the in-town temples. If time is short and you'd rather not drive far, you can comfortably loop all three in-town temples in half a day. But to make coming all the way to Roi Et worthwhile, we'd nudge you to stay a night and do both days in full.
