First, a real-talk point a lot of people miss: Koh Samui is almost round, and the famous beaches — Chaweng and Lamai face east, which means they're better for sunrise than sunset. Bophut-Bang Rak faces north, so in the evening you get a soft golden glow and the silhouettes of fishing boats rather than the sun dropping straight into the sea. If you want to watch the sun actually sink into the water, you need to cross to the west coast around Lipa Noi-Taling Ngam. But if you just want to sit, chill, eat, and drink in a good atmosphere into the evening, these three main areas are far more fun and far easier to reach.
Our 10 picks: beach clubs and beachfront bars
This list is ordered to give you an overall feel — it doesn't mean number one is the best for everyone. Each place has a different strength: some you go to for the chilled vibe, some for the party. Read the tags and price ranges alongside it.
Coco Tam's (Bophut / Fisherman's Village)
The legendary spot in Bophut's Fisherman's Village — swing seats at the bar, beanbags set right on the sand by the water, lanterns lit at dusk and a fire show every night. You can sit with a cocktail watching boat silhouettes and the golden light over Bophut bay for hours. The vibe is moody and romantic, and it's one of the island's most popular check-in spots.
Beach Republic / The Ocean Club (North Lamai)
A beach club with an infinity pool on the northern end of Lamai beach, with daybeds and cabanas, mellow house music all day. Good for settling in for the whole afternoon — brunch, a swim, then carrying on into the evening. Some days there's a Sunday party. Mid-to-high prices, but a full-on resort-club atmosphere.
CLUB SEEN Beach Club (Chaweng)
A beach club right on Chaweng that leans into the fun — good music, beds on the sand, a pool and plenty of photo corners. During the day you can sit, chill and eat; come evening the energy picks up steadily. Good for groups of friends who want to party by the beach. Drink prices are club-level, so check whether there's an event or cover charge that day.
Cabanas Beach Club (Chaweng)
A relaxed-style beach club on Chaweng with comfortable beds and cabanas, easy drinks and chilled music. Good for anyone who wants Chaweng beach without the noise of the party clubs. Late afternoon into dusk is the sweet spot.
Elephant Beach Club (Chaweng)
Another fun-leaning beach club right on Chaweng, with music, a pool zone and a bar, and a slightly younger crowd. Good for people who like a lively scene but still want to be on the water. Swim during the day; late afternoon the DJ starts up.
The Shack Bar & Grill (Bophut / Fisherman's Village)
A steak place and bar with a lively atmosphere in Fisherman's Village, known for its grilled meat and a fun night-time vibe. It's not a full feet-in-the-sand beach club, but it's in an area where you can keep strolling along Bophut beach afterwards. Good for dinner before moving on to a bar on the sand.
Zazen Restaurant (Bophut)
The beachfront restaurant of Zazen Boutique Resort at the end of Bophut bay — a quiet, romantic setting, good for a couples' dinner by the sea. Thai-fusion food, carefully done. Prices run a bit high, but the atmosphere is calm and lovely. Book a table ahead, especially in high season.
The Door (Bang Rak)
A beachfront lounge bar on Bang Rak that relocated to a new spot, with a fire show every night in the evening. The vibe is deep-chill on the sand — soft music, warm lighting — good for carrying on from dinner late into the night. It's near Samui airport too, so you can sit and watch the planes land.
La Bohemia Beach Club (Lamai)
A small beach club on Lamai beach whose strength is the big double beds set out on the sand — you can recline, eat and drink all afternoon. The vibe is easy and unhurried, not noisy. Good for anyone who wants Lamai in a simple, low-key way, with friendly prices.
Air Bar — InterContinental (Taling Ngam / West Coast)
A hillside bar at the InterContinental on the island's west coast, famous for a genuine full-screen sunset over the sea, with the Ang Thong islands in silhouette. It's not a feet-in-the-sand beach club, but if you specifically want to watch the sun actually drop, this is the answer. Prices are high and it's a long way from Chaweng, so get there about an hour before sunset.
What to know about which way the evening light faces
If your goal is to see the sun drop straight into the sea, you have to head to the west coast (Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam, Air Bar), because Chaweng-Lamai face east and Bophut-Bang Rak face north, where you'll get a soft golden glow with boat silhouettes — beautiful in a different way. Choose based on whether you want a chilled spot near your hotel, or you're willing to drive far for the full sunset shot.

How to pick the area that fits your style
Bophut-Bang Rak (Fisherman's Village)
Chilled and romantic — stroll the walking street, then on to bars on the sand and fire shows. A warm, moody vibe. Good for couples and anyone who likes it calm.
Chaweng
Fun and lively — lots of beach clubs, pools, DJs, parties on the beach. Easy to get to and bars stay open late. Good for groups of friends and anyone who likes the energy.
Lamai
Somewhere between chill and fun — a lovely beach, fewer crowds than Chaweng, with both luxe resort beach clubs and small, friendly spots. Good for anyone who wants balance.
Driving to the beach clubs — what to watch out for
A lot of people rent a motorbike to get around the island because it's nimble, but a straight warning: some stretches of road on Koh Samui are steep with hairpin bends, especially the route over the hills to the west coast and the climbs up to the viewpoints. If you're not used to a motorbike, don't push it, wear a helmet every time, and if you're heading out to drink at a beach club, don't ride yourself — a taxi or transfer is worth more than the risk.
- Don't drink and ride — most beach clubs are only a few km from your hotel, so a transfer is the easier call.
- Check the cover charge / minimum spend — some upscale beach clubs have a per-person minimum, especially on event days.
- Book a table ahead in high season — late December to early January and Songkran, the popular spots fill up fast.
- Bring cash — some small beachfront bars take cash only.
On prices — set your expectations
The prices in this article are rough ranges from reviews and published menus. The real thing swings with the season and events — high season is noticeably pricier, and some upscale beach clubs raise prices every year. Always check the venue or their latest page before you go.
