A Family Trip to Surat Thani
Khao Sok, Fruit Farms & Kid-Friendly Beaches

Surat Thani is more than just the sea and islands that divers love — it's an easier place to bring kids than you'd expect. There are boat trips past limestone peaks that leave children wide-eyed, orchard walks where you taste fruit straight off the tree, farms by the sea where you can feed sheep and horses, and quiet beaches with shallow water where the kids can play without you holding your breath. We've put together a 3-day, 2-night plan that builds in room for cranky moments, nap time, and restaurants where kids will actually eat — with real 2026 prices, and honest notes on where little ones do fine and where you should skip.

When you bring kids to Surat Thani, the key is to not cram too much into each day. Everything here is spread out: it's about an hour and a half from the city to Khao Sok, another hour or so to Don Sak by the sea, and the fruit orchards sit out toward Ban Na San in a different direction entirely. So we built each day around a single zone — that way the kids aren't stuck in the car so long they get bored, and there's time for a midday nap in the car or back at the room.

This plan starts from Surat Thani city or Surat Thani Airport (URT), and it suits families with their own car or a rental, since driving yourself is far more flexible than public transport when you're traveling with a group and a load of kids' gear. If you'd rather not drive, hiring a van with a driver for the day is a route plenty of families take.

The 3-day, 2-night plan at a glance

  • Day 1 — easy nature Surat Thani city → Khao Sok, cruise past the limestone peaks, splash in the stream, and stay near Khao Sok or head back into the city
  • Day 2 — fruit orchards and farms Taste fruit at the Ban Na San orchards (in fruit season) or explore the city, then cruise Khlong Roi Sai in the afternoon to see riverside life
  • Day 3 — sea and animal farm Don Sak, feed the animals at Hug Village, swim at a quiet beach, then head home or catch the ferry on to Koh Samui
  • Rough budget Most kid and adult activities run from tens to a few hundred baht per person. The Khao Sok boat trip starts around 450 THB/person on a join-in tour, and family rooms in the city start around 800–1,500 THB/night

Pack the kids' essentials

Bring hats, kids' sunscreen, mosquito repellent, swimsuits, secure sandals, and snacks for the car — because at some spots, like Khao Sok or Don Sak, convenience stores are hard to find. Always keep extra drinking water and snacks on hand for the kids.

Day 1 — Khao Sok, boat trip, stream swim

Day one eases the kids into nature without wearing them out. Cheow Lan Lake, inside Khao Sok National Park, has sharp limestone peaks rising out of green water, and most kids are thrilled by the longtail boat ride and the clear water. If yours are still little, go for the day-trip cruise rather than an overnight on a floating raft house — the raft houses have no mobile signal and the power switches off at a set hour, which can be tricky with small kids.

Day 1

Surat Thani city → Khao Sok → Cheow Lan Lake cruise

08:00
Leave Surat Thani cityTake Highway 401 toward Ban Ta Khun, about 78 km, roughly an hour and a half. The kids can nap in the car — stop for drinks and snacks before you enter the park.
09:30
Arrive at Ratchaprapha Dam pier (Cheow Lan)Pay the park fee at the service center — around 100 THB for a Thai adult, reduced for kids. Snap photos on the dam wall before boarding. There are restrooms and a coffee shop to get yourselves ready.
10:00
Longtail boat cruise past Thailand's 'Guilin'Join-in tours start around 450 THB/person, or charter a whole boat for roughly 1,400–2,000 THB and fit several people. Kids love Khao Sam Kloer, the three peaks lined up in a row. Put a life jacket on every child.
12:00
Lunch by the water / on a raft houseMany tours include lunch on a raft house, with southern-style dishes and fish. Order an omelet or stir-fried veggies for kids who can't handle spice.
13:30
Swim off the raft house / easy kayakingThe water is clear and cool — let the kids play in the shallows by the raft house with an adult right beside them. If anyone wants to do a cave hike, check whether the route suits kids first; some caves involve wading and aren't right for little ones.
15:00
Boat back to the pierYou'll get back to the pier around 3:30 p.m. — the kids usually fall asleep on the boat right on cue.
16:00
Check in near Khao Sok or head back to the cityAround Khao Sok there are several forest resorts with pools for the kids. If you'd rather have restaurants and kids' supplies close by, heading back to sleep in Surat Thani city works just as well.

An honest word on raft houses with small kids

Sleeping on a raft house in the middle of the lake really is beautiful — but there's no mobile signal, the power cuts off around 9–10 p.m., and some raft houses have shared bathrooms. If your child is very young or scared of the dark, a day cruise followed by a night in an air-conditioned room is the easier call. Older kids who love adventure, on the other hand, will have a blast on a raft house.

Day 2 — fruit orchards, Khlong Roi Sai cruise

Today switches things up to fruit and riverside life. If you come during May to August, the southern fruit season, Ban Na San is the original home of Thailand's prized 'rongrian' rambutan, and many orchards let you walk in, pick, and taste fruit straight off the tree. Kids love plucking their own rambutan. If you visit outside fruit season, swap in a morning around the city instead, then cruise Khlong Roi Sai in the afternoon.

Day 2

Ban Na San orchards → Khlong Roi Sai cruise

08:30
Head out to Ban Na SanIt's about 40 km south of the city, roughly 50 minutes. If you're coming in fruit season (May–Aug), call ahead to check whether the orchard is open to visitors that day.
09:30
Walk the orchard, pick and taste rambutan and fruitNa San 'rongrian' rambutan is a famous GI fruit. Many orchards charge a small entry fee of a few tens of baht and let you taste in the orchard. Kids love getting to pick their own rambutan, and in early July there's the Rongrian Rambutan Festival along Khlong Chawang.
11:30
Lunch around Na SanThere are made-to-order shops and southern-food spots along the road. Order non-spicy dishes for the kids — omelet, stir-fried veggies, clear soup.
13:00
Back to the city, nap at the roomAfternoons get hot, so let the kids nap or swim in the hotel pool first and save their energy for the evening boat trip.
16:30
Cruise Khlong Roi Sai, Tapi RiverA network of canals around the city where riverside orchard life still goes on. The boat glides slowly for about an hour-plus, and the kids get to watch waterside houses, nipa-palm groves, and coconut gardens. Arrange the boat through the local community tourism group in advance.
18:30
Dinner in the cityHead back into the city for a spot along the Tapi River or an evening market. Kids love wandering the market and picking out their own snacks.

Fruit season is May–Aug

The Ban Na San orchards open to visitors seasonally. Rambutan, durian, and mangosteen come in around May to August. Outside that window, many orchards are closed or have no fruit to taste, so call ahead to check. If you're visiting off-season, swap this day for the city or a café instead.

Day 3 — Don Sak animal farm, shallow beaches

The last day wraps up the trip with what kids love most: feeding animals and swimming in the sea. Don Sak district, on the Gulf of Thailand, is about an hour from the city and is also where the ferry pier to Koh Samui sits. If your family wants to extend the trip and overnight on Koh Samui, today you can swing through Don Sak before catching the boat.

Day 3

Don Sak → Hug Village → swimming beach

08:30
Leave the city for Don SakTake Highway 401 toward Khanom, about 60–70 km, roughly an hour.
09:45
Visit Hug Village, the seaside animal farmA 12-rai mini-zoo farm by the sea with sheep, horses, and ostriches for the kids to feed, plus play areas and a café with a view of Koh Raet. Opens at 9:30 a.m. Entry is around 80 THB for adults, 60 THB for kids; children under 80 cm get in free (check the latest prices on site).
12:00
Lunch by the sea in Don SakAround Don Sak there are seafood and made-to-order spots right by the water. Order fried fish, crab omelet, and stir-fried shrimp — easy for the kids, fresh seafood for the adults.
13:30
Swim at a quiet beach / Koh Raet viewThe beaches around Don Sak have gentle waves and shallow water that suits kids. There are small beaches and a Koh Raet viewpoint — let the kids build sandcastles and play at the water's edge with an adult watching the whole time.
15:30
Pack up, choose your next moveIf you're wrapping up the trip, it's about an hour's drive back to the city. If you want to continue to an island, catch the ferry at Don Sak pier to Koh Samui — about 1.5 hours — and overnight on the island.

If you're heading on to Koh Samui

Don Sak pier has Raja Ferry and Seatran ferries to Koh Samui several times a day. If you're driving your car onto the ferry, get to the pier at least half an hour before departure to queue with your vehicle. Booking a ferry slot in advance over long holidays will save you some stress.

What kind of stay suits a family

Most convenient

A city hotel with a pool

Convenient for restaurants, kids' supplies, and getting to every zone, and a pool means the kids can swim in the evening. It's the most flexible home base of the lot.

Close to nature

A forest resort near Khao Sok

Great if you want to be close to nature and catch the morning boat. Many have pools and lawns for the kids to run around, but there are few restaurants or convenience stores nearby.

Big groups

A pool villa for a big family

If you're traveling with several families, renting a pool villa around the city with a private pool and kitchen works out better than booking a stack of rooms — and the kids can swim without sharing a pool with strangers.

Tips for surviving a family trip to Surat Thani

  • Leave plenty of drive time The sights are spread far apart — don't pack two zones into one day, or the kids will get cranky from the long car rides.
  • Life jackets are non-negotiable On every water activity, both the Khao Sok cruise and Khlong Roi Sai, put a life jacket on the kids every time.
  • The southern rainy season is Oct–Dec Rain comes down hard then, and water and sea activities may be canceled. If you're bringing kids, avoiding this window makes for an easier trip.
  • Keep backup snacks on you Kids get hungry on the road often — keep snacks, milk, and water in the car, since shops are scarce on some stretches.

FAQ

Where should I take young kids in Surat Thani?

The spots where little kids have fun without wearing out are the day-trip limestone cruise at Cheow Lan Lake, feeding animals at Hug Village in Don Sak, and swimming at the calm, shallow beaches around Don Sak. The Ban Na San fruit orchards are great too if you come during fruit season, May to August.

Is Khao Sok good for young kids — should we overnight on a raft house or do a day trip?

Khao Sok works for kids, but if yours are still very young, go for a day cruise and head back to an air-conditioned room. The raft houses in the middle of the lake have no mobile signal, the power cuts off around 9–10 p.m., and some have shared bathrooms. Older kids who love adventure, though, will have a great time on a raft house.

How much is entry to Hug Village in Don Sak, and what time does it open?

Hug Village is a seaside animal farm in Don Sak district. It opens around 9:30 a.m. Entry is roughly 80 THB for adults and 60 THB for kids, and children under 80 cm get in free. Check the latest prices and hours on their page before you go, as they can change.

When's the best time to taste fruit at the Ban Na San orchards?

The southern fruit season runs about May to August, when Na San rambutan, durian, and mangosteen come in. Many orchards open for visits and tasting during this window, and there's a Na San Rongrian Rambutan Festival in early July. Outside the season many orchards are closed, so call ahead before you go.

Do I need my own car for a family trip to Surat Thani?

You should have one, because the sights are spread far apart — about an hour and a half from the city to Khao Sok and roughly an hour to Don Sak. Driving yourself or hiring a van with a driver is far more flexible than public transport when you're traveling as a group with luggage and small kids.
