First Time in Surat Thani
What to Know + Sample Plans

Surat Thani is the largest province in southern Thailand and the gateway to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, plus the way in to Cheow Lan Lake and Khao Sok National Park. A lot of people just pass through to catch a boat and move on, even though the province itself has more to do than you'd expect. If it's your first time and you're not sure where to start, here's what's worth knowing before you set off, along with sample itineraries to pick from based on how much time you have. I'll be straight about what's worth it and what to keep your expectations in check on.

First Time in Surat Thani What to Know + Sample Plans

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

First, it helps to get the big picture: Surat Thani has three zones that visitors tend to head for. There's the town along the Tapi River (southern food, cafes, markets), the nature zone to the west (Cheow Lan Lake, Khao Sok National Park), and the sea zone to the east (Don Sak, boats out to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao). All three are in different directions and a fair drive apart, so planning matters — try to cram them all into one day and you usually run out of time.

How to Get to Surat Thani

There are several ways into Surat Thani — flying, train, or bus. Pick based on your budget and how much time you have.

Fastest

Plane (URT Airport)

The fastest option, with several flights a day from Bangkok and a flight time of about 1.5 hours. The airport is in Phun Phin district, around 25 km from town. Vans and shuttle buses run straight from the airport into town and on to Don Sak pier.

Budget

Train (Surat Thani Station)

The train station is also in Phun Phin, not the town center. The southern line from Bangkok takes about 9-12 hours, which suits anyone happy to save money in a sleeper car. From the station it's another 13 km or so by road into town.

Cheapest

Coach / Van

Coaches run from Bangkok and nearby cities into Surat Thani bus terminal at easy prices, traveling overnight to arrive in the morning. Good if you want to save money and aren't in a rush.

Don't get confused by the name

People usually call the province just 'Surat,' but the airport and train station are actually in Phun Phin district, not in town. When you book a transfer, be specific about your destination — whether you're heading into town, to Don Sak pier, or to Khao Sok — because they're all in different directions.

Getting Into Town and Onward

  • Into town from the airport/train station — shared vans and buses run into town for roughly a hundred-something baht, or you can grab a taxi or hired car. The airport is about 25 km out.
  • To Don Sak pier for the islands — there are direct buses from town to Don Sak pier starting around 160 THB, or you can buy a combined bus + boat ticket from the airport or town that takes you all the way to the island.
  • To Cheow Lan Lake / Khao Sok — these are out west on Highway 401 toward Ban Ta Khun, about 78 km and a 1.5-hour drive. Vans on the Surat-Khao Sok/Takua Pa route will drop you off along the way.
  • Around town — the town isn't big, so you can stroll the Tapi riverfront. For longer distances use the red songthaews, motorbike taxis, or a ride-hailing app. Renting a car or motorbike is the easiest way to get out of town.

Renting a car pays off if you're leaving town

Surat Thani's standout spots — Cheow Lan Lake, Chaiya, Don Sak — are well outside town and public transport isn't frequent. If you're traveling as a group or short on time, renting your own car or hiring a van with a driver is usually better value and more flexible than waiting on public transport.

When to Go and How to Dodge the Rain

Surat Thani sits on the Gulf of Thailand side, where the heavy rains come later than in other regions. The wettest stretch is October to December, especially November, when rain is heavy and some years bring flooding. The clear-sky, calm-water window that's best for the islands and the lake is January to April. If you can choose, avoid the end of the year — especially if you plan to take a boat to the islands or cruise the lake.

  • Jan-Apr — the best window: clear skies, calm seas, great for the islands and overnight raft stays at Cheow Lan.
  • May-Sep — showers come and go, but it's still doable, with a deep-green lake and fewer crowds.
  • Oct-Dec — the wettest stretch. Island boats may be canceled on rough days, so check the forecast and build in a backup plan.

What to Do — Pick Your Style

Khao Sok-Cheow Lan

Nature lovers

Cheow Lan Lake for an overnight stay on a floating raft, taking in the limestone karsts that have earned it the nickname 'Guilin of Thailand,' then a hike through Khao Sok National Park.

Island hop

Sea and islands

Take a boat from Don Sak out to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao for swimming and snorkeling over the reefs.

Chaiya

Temples and old town

Head to Chaiya to pay respects at Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya, the ancient Srivijaya stupa, and visit Buddhadasa's Suan Mokkh forest monastery.

In town

Food and cafes

Eat your way through punchy southern dishes, khanom jeen with curry sauce, Gulf seafood, and cafes along the Tapi River in town.

Local specialties not to miss

While you're in Surat Thani, try Chaiya salted eggs, Nasan school rambutan (in season roughly May-Jul), Kanchanadit oysters, and southern-style khanom jeen with a full spread of fresh veg on the side. These are regional flavors you won't find quite the same anywhere else.

Sample Plan — 1 Day: Town + Chaiya

If you've only got one day and don't want a long boat ride, I'd pair the town with Chaiya — you can cover both food and temples in a single day.

Day 1

Town → Chaiya → Back to Town

08:00
Breakfast Surat Thani styleStart with khanom jeen and curry sauce, khao yam, or old-school coffee with dim sum at the morning market — the opening meal locals actually eat.
09:30
Drive to Chaiya districtIt's about 50 km from town, roughly an hour. Chaiya is an old town that was once the center of the Srivijaya kingdom.
10:30
Pay respects at Wat Phra Borommathat ChaiyaA Srivijaya-style stupa over a thousand years old and an important sacred site in the south. Dress modestly inside the temple grounds.
11:30
Stop at Suan MokkhBuddhadasa's forest meditation monastery, with its 'Spiritual Theatre' and dhamma puzzle paintings. The grounds are shady, quiet, and calm.
13:00
Lunch and buy Chaiya salted eggsChaiya is the home of the original salted egg — grab some as a souvenir. Stop at a southern restaurant and order gaeng tai pla and khua kling.
15:00
Drive back into townArrive in town in the late afternoon and rest up before the evening.
17:30
Cafe / stroll along the Tapi RiverSit at a riverside cafe to catch the cool breeze, wander the old town, and finish with a seafood dinner or the night market.

Sample Plan — 2-3 Days: Add Cheow Lan Lake or the Islands

With more than a day, you can choose between the nature route (Cheow Lan Lake-Khao Sok) and the sea route (out to Koh Samui-Koh Phangan). These two are in opposite directions, so don't try to combine them on a short trip.

Day 2

Option A: Cheow Lan Lake, Raft Overnight

07:30
Leave town for Ban Ta KhunTake Highway 401, about 78 km and 1.5 hours. Aim to reach the pier before noon to catch the boat to the rafts.
10:00
Boat into the lake, see Khao Sam KloeThree limestone peaks lined up together — the 'Guilin of Thailand' scene you see on the postcards.
14:00
Kayak, swim, stay on the raftThere's no phone signal out on the lake, and the power cuts out when the generator shuts off — bring a power bank and a flashlight.
Day 2 (Alternative)

Option B: To the Islands from Don Sak

08:00
Head to Don Sak pierAbout 60-70 km from town, or buy a combined bus + boat ticket in town. Ferries and speedboats leave several times a day.
10:30
Boat to Koh Samui or Koh PhanganThe ferry to Samui takes about 1.5 hours. Once on the island, hit the beaches, swim, and stay 1-2 nights.
Evening
Swim and watch the sunset on the islandPick a beach to match your style — lively Chaweng-Lamai, or a quieter beach on the north side of the island.

Straight talk about timing

An island trip or a lake stay with an overnight takes at least 2 days and 1 night. If you've only got 2 full days, pick one — don't try to do both. With 3 days and 2 nights, do town + Chaiya for one day, then the lake or the islands for the other two.

Rough Budget per Person

  • Town + Chaiya, 1 day — food, temple entry, and fuel/transport run about 500-1,000 THB if you don't stay overnight.
  • Cheow Lan raft stay, 2 days 1 night — standard packages start around 1,800-2,500 THB including boat, meals and activities; fancier rafts start from 6,000 THB and up, plus a national park fee of around 100 THB (Thai rate).
  • Koh Samui, 2 days 1 night — return boat fare is a few hundred baht; island accommodation ranges from a few hundred to tens of thousands of baht. Budget extra for food and getting around on the island.
  • Accommodation in town — town hotels range from a few hundred to just over a thousand baht, much better value than staying on the island if you use town as your base.

SIM card and cash

Phone signal is good in town and along the main roads, but there's no signal at all out on Cheow Lan Lake, and some shops and rafts mainly take cash. Carry a decent amount of cash before you head out of town.
