Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge 3
Nakhon Phanom → Thakhek → Vietnam

The 3rd Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge crosses the Mekong from Nakhon Phanom to the town of Thakhek in Khammouane Province, Laos. The bridge itself is a pretty photo spot along the river, but what a lot of people don't realize is that it's a genuine overland gateway that stretches all the way to Vietnam, via Laos Route 12. We've gathered the real border-crossing details, documents, transport costs, and the onward route here in one place.

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

The 3rd Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge opened on 11 November 2011 (an easy date to remember — 11/11/11), linking the Thai side at Ban Hom in Tambon At Samat, Muang Nakhon Phanom district, with the Lao side at Ban Vern Tai near Thakhek in Khammouane Province. The bridge is about 1,423 metres long and 13 metres wide, with two lanes, and sits roughly 8 kilometres from downtown Nakhon Phanom — drive north along Route 212 to reach it.

To be honest, the bridge isn't an attraction worth setting aside half a day for. Most people stop to take a few photos and move on. What makes this bridge more interesting than the average one is that it's an overland route that actually continues all the way to Vietnam. If you like cross-border travel, this is a good starting point.

How to Cross and What Documents You Need

The Nakhon Phanom border checkpoint on the Thai side is open daily, roughly 06:00–22:00. During festival periods it's worth double-checking the hours, as they can change. If you're crossing to visit Thakhek or go further, you'll go through immigration on both sides as usual.

  • Use a passport — general tourists, including Thai nationals, can enter Laos on a passport and stay up to 30 days, with access to all of Laos, not just Khammouane.
  • Use a Border Pass — only for people whose registered residence is in Nakhon Phanom province; it's valid only for Khammouane and limited to 3 days / 2 nights, which suits a quick out-and-back trip.
  • Foreign nationals — many nationalities can get a visa on arrival at the checkpoint. Bring a passport photo and the fee in US dollars; having it ready is faster than sorting it out on the spot.

Good to Know

You can take a private car across the bridge, but you'll need to do the paperwork to take a vehicle out of the country and buy Lao-side insurance at the checkpoint. Many people skip all that and take a scheduled bus across the bridge instead. The fare is around 60–80 THB per trip — easier, and no vehicle paperwork to deal with.

Where the Bridge Actually Looks Good in Photos

Photography is hard at the checkpoint itself, since it's a controlled area. The spots with a nicer view of the bridge are further out, along the Mekong.

In town

The Riverfront in Central Nakhon Phanom

Take an evening stroll along the Mekong in town and you'll see the bridge stretching across as a backdrop. The golden light at sunset is lovely.

Outskirts

Tha Uthen Area

Drive a bit further north toward Tha Uthen district for a full-on angle of the bridge spanning the Mekong, with fewer people than in town.

Lao side

The Thakhek Side

Once you've crossed over, look back and you can see the Nakhon Phanom skyline and the chedi — an angle Thai tourists rarely shoot.

What to Do in Thakhek Once You Cross

Thakhek is a small, quiet town with an old-world feel, with French-colonial buildings along the Mekong that make for an easy half-day stroll. But the real draw of Khammouane is the limestone landscape outside town.

  • Tham Pha / Tham Nang Aen — a cluster of limestone caves outside Thakhek, the highlight of Khammouane and a popular trip.
  • The Loop — a 3–4 day motorbike circuit around the Khammouane mountains, well known among backpackers, passing Kong Lor Cave and its multi-kilometre river cave.
  • Riverside Thakhek town — the central square, old buildings, and cafes, good for a relaxed sit-down if you're short on time.

Straight Talk

If you only have half a day and just pop over to Thakhek, the town can feel a little too quiet for the effort of getting there. The people who really get their money's worth are those who plan an overnight to explore the Khammouane caves, or who use Thakhek as a stopover on the way to Vietnam.

The Route Onward to Vietnam Through Laos

This is the reason many people choose to cross at Nakhon Phanom. From Thakhek, Laos Route 12 runs straight east, threading through the Annamite Range to the Na Phao checkpoint on the Lao side, which connects with the Cha Lo checkpoint in Quang Binh Province, Vietnam — and from there down to the coastal town of Dong Hoi. The distance from Thakhek to Quang Binh is about 320 kilometres, roughly a 6-hour drive including stops.

There are buses running Thakhek–Vietnam, but they don't go every day and the schedule changes often, so you'll need to check at the Thakhek bus station yourself. If you're tight on timing, ask ahead or build in a buffer day — don't plan this to land on the day of your flight home.

Plan It to Be Worth It

This route suits travelers who want to hit three countries in one trip — Thailand, Laos, Vietnam. It's not for anyone who wants a same-day round trip, because getting to Vietnam means at least one overnight in Thakhek. Prepare your Vietnam visa and carry cash in dollars / kip / dong before you set off.

How to Get to the Bridge from Town

  • Private car / rental — from downtown Nakhon Phanom, drive north on Route 212 for about 8 km; it's well signposted and takes around 15 minutes.
  • Rental motorbike — there are rental shops in town, handy if you just want to take photos and then continue on to Tha Uthen.
  • Cross-border bus — if you intend to cross to Thakhek, hop on a scheduled bus right at the checkpoint and skip the vehicle paperwork.
