Uthai Thani–Suphan Buri
via Ban Rai, 3 Days 2 Nights

Uthai Thani and Suphan Buri are neighboring provinces that a lot of people skip over, even though you can drive between them easily through Ban Rai district, which sits right on the border. That one road gives you mountain-valley temples, lakeside nature and a hundred-year-old market in a single trip. We've mapped it as 3 days and 2 nights, starting in Uthai Thani town, dropping into Ban Rai, then drifting down into Suphan Buri before heading home.

Uthai Thani–Suphan Buri via Ban Rai, 3 Days 2 Nights

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

The nice thing about this route is that you never have to backtrack. You leave Uthai Thani town, head south into Ban Rai district, which borders Suphan Buri's Dan Chang district perfectly. Once you've finished with Ban Rai, you just slide straight into Suphan Buri without doubling back. It suits anyone driving their own car who wants a laid-back trip mixing nature with old markets, the kind you can do over a weekend plus one day of leave.

Route overview and getting around

Coming from Bangkok, take Highway 340 straight up toward Suphan Buri. You can start in Uthai Thani first and work your way down to Suphan Buri, or flip the order. In this plan we start in Uthai Thani town because it's the northernmost point, then move south through Ban Rai–Dan Chang–Sam Chuk–U Thong, which keeps the whole route as one continuous line with no backtracking.

  • Uthai Thani town → Ban Rai district — about 80 km, roughly 1 hr 20 min. The last stretch is a gentle climb into the hills.
  • Ban Rai → Dan Chang (Suphan Buri) — these two districts share a border; another 40–60 min gets you to Krasiao Dam.
  • Dan Chang → Sam Chuk / Suphan Buri town — about another hour on flat, easy roads, good for a stop at the old market before heading back.
  • Transport — we recommend your own car or a rental for this route, since the sights are spread out and public transport between districts is sparse.

Before you set off

Most temples and nature spots around Ban Rai close around 4:30 PM, so line up your outdoor stops earlier in the day and save markets, cafes or food for the evening. That way you won't feel rushed.

Tweak the plan to your style

Tweaks Day 2

All-out nature

Give Ban Rai and Krasiao Dam your full attention, drop the old markets, and add Huai Pa Tat valley or a Ban Rai viewpoint instead.

Kid-friendly

Families with kids

Lean into Bueng Chawak with its fish tunnel and zoo, which kids love. Make it the highlight of the last day and give it more time.

Squeeze into 2 days

Only have 2 days

Merge Day 1 and Day 2: do Wat Tham Khao Wong and Wat Pha Thang in the morning, then drop down to Krasiao Dam in the afternoon and overnight on the Suphan Buri side.

A few honest notes

The sights on this route are fairly spread out, so it's tough without your own car, and in the rainy season the climb into the Ban Rai hills can get slippery. Check the weather and set off early so you've got plenty of buffer for the driving.

FAQ

How many days do you need for Uthai Thani–Suphan Buri via Ban Rai?

Three days and two nights is just about right. You get the valley temples around Ban Rai, the lakeside nature at Krasiao Dam, and the old markets on the Suphan Buri side. If you're short on time you can squeeze it into 2 days and 1 night by merging the first and second days.

Where is Ban Rai, and why does it link the two provinces?

Ban Rai district is the southernmost part of Uthai Thani and borders Suphan Buri's Dan Chang district exactly, so you can drive from Uthai Thani town down to Ban Rai and then flow on into Suphan Buri without ever backtracking.

What are the opening hours for Wat Tham Khao Wong and Wat Pha Thang?

Wat Tham Khao Wong is open roughly 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, and Wat Pha Thang roughly 8:30 AM–4:30 PM. Both are free to enter. Dress modestly and go between morning and early afternoon since they close in the late afternoon.

How much does Bueng Chawak cost?

First-gate entry is about 30 THB for adults and 10 THB for children. If you want the saltwater fish and shark tunnel, it's about 150 THB more. The aquarium is open roughly 9:00 AM–5:00 PM daily.

Do you need your own car for this route?

We recommend your own car or a rental, since the sights are scattered between Ban Rai, Dan Chang, Sam Chuk and U Thong. Public transport between districts is limited and involves several transfers, which isn't convenient for a trip like this.
