Uttaradit 1-Day Itinerary
Laplae – Phra Thaen – Phraya Phichai

Uttaradit is the kind of province most people drive straight through on the way to Sukhothai or Nan, even though the town centre and Laplae district sit close enough to cover comfortably in a single day. This plan strings together the three big stops — the Phraya Phichai Dab Hak monument, Wat Phra Thaen Sila At, and old Laplae town — along one logical route so you never have to double back, with the real driving times and distances built in.

Uttaradit 1-Day Itinerary Laplae – Phra Thaen – Phraya Phichai

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

The three main stops on this plan sit almost entirely along one route. The Phraya Phichai Dab Hak monument is right in the middle of town, in front of the provincial hall, while Wat Phra Thaen Sila At and Laplae town are out toward Laplae district, around 6–8 km from the centre — just a 15–20 minute drive. So we pay our respects at the Phraya Phichai monument in town first thing in the morning, then work our way out toward Laplae, all heading the same direction.

This day suits anyone with their own car or a rented motorbike, since the sights are spread out and public transport in town is limited. If you don't have a vehicle, you can hire a car or motorbike taxi for each leg, but driving yourself is by far the easiest option.

Today at a glance

  • Morning — Phraya Phichai Dab Hak monument + Wat Tha Thanon, central Uttaradit
  • Late morning — Wat Phra Thaen Sila At and Wat Phra Yuen Phutthabat Yukhon, on the same hill
  • Midday–afternoon — Laplae town: the town gate, museum, market and khao pan phak
  • Evening — Head back into town for durian and longkong souvenirs (in season) before wrapping up

Route-planning tip

If you come during Laplae durian season (roughly June to August), feel free to flip the order and hit Laplae before noon — the fresh fruit stalls and khao pan phak shops often sell out fast in the afternoon. The temples are flexible since they stay open until evening.

The 1-day plan, hour by hour

All in one day

Morning in town → late morning in Laplae → back to town by evening

08:00
Start at the Phraya Phichai Dab Hak monument in front of the provincial hallRight in the town centre in Tha It subdistrict, with easy parking. Come early while the sun is still soft for good photos. Phraya Phichai is Uttaradit's local hero — the legend of his broken sword comes from his defence of the town of Phichai.
08:30
Walk over to Wat Tha Thanon on the Nan River, near the monumentAn old riverside temple central to the town, home to Luang Pho Phet, a bronze Buddha image you can pay respects to. The riverside setting is quiet and peaceful, and it doesn't take long.
09:15
Grab breakfast in town — coffee, rice congee, pa thong koThe Uttaradit market area has plenty of morning spots. Fuel up before heading out toward Laplae.
10:00
Drive out toward Laplae district to Wat Phra Thaen Sila AtIn Thung Yang subdistrict, Laplae district, about 6 km from town, a 15-minute drive. Open 08:00–17:00. It's a royal temple housing the Phra Thaen Sila At, a sacred stone slab central to the town, set inside a four-gabled viharn.
10:45
Walk up the hill to Wat Phra Yuen Phutthabat Yukhon on the same riseClose enough to reach on foot, with a Buddha footprint and a view down over the fields. It only takes a few minutes but it's worth the extra stop.
11:30
Enter Laplae town and photograph the Laplae town gateAn applied-Sukhothai-style gate in eggshell yellow, around 10 metres tall — the first landmark of Laplae town and a popular check-in spot.
12:00
Lunch on Laplae local food — khao pan phak and mi panKhao pan phak is a steamed rice-flour sheet wrapped around blanched vegetables and topped with sauce, a Laplae signature that's hard to find elsewhere. The well-known shops are around the market and along In Jai Mi road.
13:15
Visit the Laplae Museum on In Jai Mi roadIt recreates old Laplae life — the post-birth fire ritual, rice barns, and the story of Phra Si Phanom Mat, who developed the town. It also explains the origins of the legendary 'town where you can't tell a lie'.
14:00
Stop by the Phra Si Phanom Mat monument and walk the Si Phanom Mat municipal marketA retro-style market with wall murals telling the community's story. You can sample local sweets and pick up small souvenirs.
15:00
In season — visit an orchard or stall for Long–Lin Laplae durian, or longkongLaplae durian comes out around June to August, with langsat and longkong overlapping. If you're here off-season you can skip this and sit at a café instead.
16:30
Drive back into town and pick up souvenirs to finishLocal souvenirs here include durian paste, longkong, Laplae teen jok woven sarongs and tong kong grass brooms. Take your pick before heading off.

Why the route runs this way

The reason we visit the Phraya Phichai monument first thing is that it's central, easy to set off from, and the sun isn't harsh yet. From there you work outward toward Laplae, all in the same direction. Wat Phra Thaen and Wat Phra Yuen sit on the same hill, so they're grouped together in the late morning. By noon you reach Laplae town right at lunchtime, then spend the afternoon strolling the museum and market at an easy pace — no doubling back and forth.

Easygoing

With family or older travellers

Skip the climb up to Wat Phra Yuen and focus on Phra Thaen below plus Laplae town, which is flat and easy to walk. Take a longer, relaxed lunch.

Chill

Photo and café lovers

Spend extra time at the Laplae town gate and the mural market, then finish at an orchard-view café around Laplae in the afternoon.

Pass-through

Stopping over en route to Nan/Sukhothai

If you only have half a day, just pick the Phraya Phichai monument and Laplae town to catch the highlights, then drive on.

What to know before you go

  • Getting around — Your own vehicle is easiest. The sights are spread out but only a few minutes' drive apart.
  • Temple hours — Wat Phra Thaen Sila At is open roughly 08:00–17:00, so any time of day works.
  • Temple dress — It's a royal temple, so dress modestly; covering shoulders and knees is more appropriate.
  • Fruit season — For fresh Laplae durian, come June to August. Off-season, lean into the culture and food instead.

Straight talk

Uttaradit is a small town and its sights aren't as flashy as in big cities. The charm is in the quiet, the Laplae legend, and the local food you can't easily find elsewhere. Come with that in mind and you'll enjoy it more than if you're expecting grand, dramatic attractions.

FAQ

What can you do in Uttaradit in one day?

The three main stops you can comfortably cover in a day are the Phraya Phichai Dab Hak monument in the town centre, Wat Phra Thaen Sila At in Laplae district, and Laplae town itself, with its town gate, museum, old market and khao pan phak. They're all close together, just a few minutes' drive apart.

Is Wat Phra Thaen Sila At far from the town centre?

Not far. It's in Thung Yang subdistrict, Laplae district, about 6 km from central Uttaradit — roughly a 15-minute drive. The temple is open about 08:00–17:00.

Can you visit Uttaradit without your own car?

You can, but it's harder because the sights are spread out and public transport in town is limited. Renting a motorbike or hiring a car/motorbike taxi for each leg works, but driving yourself is the most convenient by far.

What's the must-try food in Laplae town?

Khao pan phak — a steamed rice-flour sheet wrapped around vegetables and topped with broth — is a Laplae signature that's hard to find elsewhere. Next is mi pan, and if you come during fruit season there's also delicious Long–Lin Laplae durian and longkong.

When's the best time to visit Uttaradit?

The most fun time is fruit season, roughly June to August, when you can eat Laplae durian and longkong fresh from the orchards. For cooler weather to visit temples and walk the town, aim for late in the year through early in the new year.
