Home of langsat fruit, Sirikit Dam, and the legendary town of Laplae
Uttaradit sits on the seam between the North and the central plains, and plenty of people drive straight through it on the way to Phrae or Nan without stopping. That's a shame, because there's a lot to see. The province is famous for sweet langsat and longkong that come out in th

Rice noodles wrapped with vegetables and egg into bite-size rolls, dipped in a sweet-and-sour sauce — a well-known Laplae snack
Khao soi, nam ngiao, kaeng hang le, sai ua, and crispy pork (khaep mu) are easy to find across town — the southern-northern take on the cuisine
The province's signature fruit, in season during the rains — buy it fresh at the orchards or roadside stalls at local prices
Around the markets and town streets you'll find noodle shops, rice-and-curry stalls, and snacks to graze on without spending much
A popular dinner for locals — DIY grill-and-hotpot — with plenty of spots to choose from at friendly prices
In town and around Sirikit Dam there are small cafes for a coffee with water and mountain views

That's a shame, because there's a lot to see. The province is famous for sweet langsat and longkong that come out in the rainy season, and Sirikit Dam holds back the Nan River to form a wide reservoir. Two long-revered shrines, Phra Thaen Sila At and the standing Buddha, are the town's spiritual anchors. Over in Laplae district you'll find a legendary old town with wooden houses, orchards of long-laplae and lin-laplae durian, and the hand-forged knives of Ban Nam Phi, made the old way for generations. If you like quiet towns without the crowds, Uttaradit is easier to enjoy than you'd expect.
