Budget Uttaradit
2 Days, 1 Night Done Right

Uttaradit is easier on the wallet than you'd expect. Most of its main sights are old temples, a dam, and the Laplae old town that you can wander for free, no entry fee at all. In-town rooms start in the low hundreds of baht, and a plate of local food runs just a few tens of baht. We've put together a 2-day, 1-night plan that covers the culture, the nature, and the food while keeping spending under control, with a real cost breakdown at the end of the article.

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Good news for tight budgets: almost all of Uttaradit's standout spots charge no entry fee — Wat Phra Thaen Sila At, the Phraya Phichai Dap Hak Monument, Sirikit Dam, and the Laplae old town included. So your real costs come down to lodging, food, and fuel or local transport. Plan it well and this trip lands comfortably within budget.

Getting to Uttaradit on the Cheap

From Bangkok, the train is the cheapest option — economy tickets start around ฿210–240 (every northern-line service passes through Uttaradit). A bus from Mo Chit starts around ฿400 and takes about 7–8 hours. If you want to save a night's accommodation, take an overnight service and sleep on board.

  • Northern-line train — from around ฿210–240, dropping you right at Uttaradit station in the city center, an easy walk to in-town lodging.
  • Bangkok–Uttaradit bus — from around ฿400, leaving Mo Chit and arriving downtown.
  • In town, use songthaews or motorcycle taxis — short hops cost tens of baht. If you're heading out to Laplae or the dam, renting a motorbike at ฿250–300 a day beats hiring a car.

Money-Saving Tip

If there are 2–4 of you, splitting a motorbike rental per day works out far cheaper than hiring a car. But if you'd rather not ride yourself, ask your guesthouse about daily transfers — many will help arrange a fair price for you.

Budget Hotels in Uttaradit

Lodging in downtown Uttaradit is very friendly on the wallet. Entry-level fan or air-con rooms run around ฿350–600 a night, while small hotels with good reviews sit around ฿600–900. The smart pick is somewhere close to the train station and the town market, so you can walk out for breakfast and dinner without spending extra on transport.

  • Pick a room near the town market — walk to breakfast and dinner and cut your transport costs a lot.
  • Book ahead through an app — the same room is often cheaper than walking in on weekdays.
  • A fan room is plenty — evenings here are pleasant, so a fan room saves you another few hundred baht.

Plan Your Route to Save Fuel

Wat Phra Thaen Sila At, Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang, and the Laplae old town are all in the same area (Laplae district), so you can cover them in a single half-day. Sirikit Dam is in the opposite direction — save it for another day and it works out better.

Cheap, Tasty Food in Town

Uttaradit's food carries hints of both Lanna and Lan Xang, nicely bold in flavor, and mostly still priced in the tens of baht. The standouts worth trying are Laplae-style khanom jeen with fish curry — rich, intense fish-based sauce — and the noodle shops around town that have been open for decades.

  • Laplae khanom jeen with fish curry — a rich, local-style sauce for tens of baht a plate, eaten with fresh veggies; filling and easy on the wallet.
  • Noodle shops in town — several long-running spots, ฿40–60 a bowl, both soup and dry.
  • Khao man gai / rice with curry — a proper meal for ฿40–60, found at shops around town and the morning market.
  • The town morning market — fresh food, traditional sweets, and seasonal fruit, cheaper than buying at a shop.
