Uttaradit Nature Trip
Sirikit Dam, Mon Lablae & Viewpoints

Uttaradit is a lesser-known province that most travelers skip, but if you like quiet nature where mountains meet a lake, it delivers more than you'd expect. This plan takes you cruising on Sirikit Dam, the largest earthen dam in Thailand, across the Suriyan-Chantra lake, then stops at Mon Lablae for coffee with mountain views in the middle of an orchard, before heading up to sleep over the sea of mist at Phu Lae Lao, a two-country viewpoint. It's an easy-going route with no rush, good for couples and families alike.

Uttaradit is more than just the old town of Lablae and its langsat fruit. Turn out of the city toward Tha Pla district, about an hour away, and you'll reach Sirikit Dam with its large freshwater lake wrapped in folds of mountains. Over in Lablae and Ban Khok districts there are orchard cafes and a sea-of-mist viewpoint where the air turns cool and comfortable in winter. This plan is built for 2 days and 1 night, and traveling by your own car is by far the easiest, since the sights are spread out in different directions.

Before you set off

This trip needs your own car or a rental, because Sirikit Dam sits about 58 km from the city and Phu Lae Lao is even farther out toward Ban Khok district, with no public transport reaching either. The best window is November to February, when the weather is cool and you have a real chance of catching the sea of mist.

Day One β€” Sirikit Dam, lake cruise and views

Head straight for Sirikit Dam on day one. It's the largest earthen dam in Thailand, built across the Nan River at Khao Pha Som in Pha Lueat sub-district, Tha Pla. Above the dam is a wide lake locals call Suriyan-Chantra, with still, clear water and mountains all around. The sunset here in the evening is genuinely beautiful.

Day 1

City β†’ Sirikit Dam (Tha Pla)

08:30
Leave Uttaradit city, heading for Tha Pla districtAbout 58 km, roughly 1 hour. Good road with mountain views on both sides.
09:45
Arrive at the Sirikit Dam crest, walk the lake viewpoint and take photosThe crest has a wide deck with a full view of the lake, and a cool breeze the whole time.
10:30
Cruise the Suriyan-Chantra lake by boatTour boats are available. A large boat runs around 3,000 THB/hour (holds about 80 people), a small one around 2,000 THB/hour (holds about 25). It's worth it split among a group; with a small group, ask about a raft trip or kayaking instead.
12:00
Lunch at a restaurant on the dam crest, freshwater fish dishesThere are several restaurants and coffee shops on the crest. Fresh fish straight from the lake is the highlight.
14:00
Kayak, ride a paddle boat, or relax with coffee by the waterIf you're with kids, pick the easy activities along the shore. The water in the service area is calm.
16:30
Find a breezy spot and wait for sunset over the lakeSunset is the highlight here, with the sky changing color and reflecting off the water.
18:00
Check in; choose between lakeside lodging in the dam area or back in the cityThe dam area has EGAT guesthouses and private lakeside villas. Book ahead in the winter season.

About the first night's stay

If you want to wake up to the lake view, stay in the dam area, such as an EGAT guesthouse or a lakeside villa around Tha Pla. But if the next day you're heading to Phu Lae Lao, which is in a different direction, you might prefer to stay in the city to keep your routes simpler. You can see lodging options on our hotels page.

Day Two β€” Mon Lablae, mountain-view cafe and souvenirs

On the morning of day two, loop back toward Lablae district and stop at Mon Lablae. It gathers local restaurants, coffee shops, a small museum and souvenir stalls all in one place. Sip a coffee while looking out at the mountains and orchards around you, an easy break before the last stretch of the trip.

Day 2

Lablae β†’ Mon Lablae β†’ Old town

08:30
Leave your hotel and head for Lablae districtLablae is about 8 km from the city, an easy drive of under 20 minutes.
09:30
Reach Mon Lablae, settle into a mountain-view cafe, order coffee and local snacksMon Lablae is open 09:00–21:00, split into a souvenir zone, a coffee zone and a restaurant zone.
10:30
Browse the folk museum and shop for woven textiles and Lablae souvenirsThere's local woven cloth, regional snacks and seasonal fruit. From May to July you'll find langsat, longkong and Lablae's Long Lablae durian.
12:00
Lunch on Lablae's local dishesTry khao pan phak (rice rolls with vegetables) and Lablae's mi pan rice noodles, regional bites that are hard to find elsewhere.
13:30
Stroll the Lablae old town, the city gate arch and old wooden housesIt's quiet and peaceful, good for relaxed photos before moving on.
15:00
Head back to the city to buy souvenirs and wrap up, or continue up to Phu Lae Lao if you have timeIf you have another night, continue to Phu Lae Lao (see the next section). If not, the trip wraps up nicely in the city.

One more night β€” Phu Lae Lao, the two-country sea of mist

If you have more than 2 days, I'd suggest moving up to sleep at Phu Lae Lao, a viewpoint in Ban Khok district, Bo Bia sub-district. It's a two-country viewpoint where you can look across the Thai-side ranges to the mountains on the Lao side. In winter people love to come up and camp, then wake to a sea of mist filling the valley.

  • Getting there β€” it's out in Ban Khok district, noticeably farther than the dam and Lablae. You'll need your own car; drive up Highway 1268 then onto local roads, and check the road condition during the rainy season before heading up.
  • Camping fee β€” around Ban Muang Jet Ton and nearby rest points there are campgrounds, roughly 60 THB/tent, with toilets and staff on site.
  • Best season β€” November to February, cool weather with a high chance of the sea of mist, and clear stars at night.
  • What to pack β€” bring a warm jacket, a flashlight and backup food. Shops up the mountain are limited, so fill up on fuel before you go up.

Driving up the mountain safely

The road up Phu Lae Lao is a mountain route, steep and narrow in places. Drive it during daylight and avoid going up at night or after heavy rain. Check your brakes and tires before you set off.

Other nature viewpoints worth a stop

Near the dam

Lam Nam Nan National Park

Has a viewpoint over the Suriyan-Chantra lake, looking out at the reservoir ringed by mountains. In the evening it's a lovely sunset spot, easy to add on after the dam.

Fruit season

Lablae orchards

From May to July the orchards open for you to taste langsat, longkong and Long Lablae durian right at the source, in a shady setting amid the valley.

On the way

Wat Phra Thaen Sila At

An old temple paired with the town of Lablae, with its stone seat (phra thaen sila) and a cool, calm atmosphere. An easy stop to pay respects on your way in or out of Lablae.

Rough budget per person (2 days, 1 night)

  • 1 night's stay β€” around 600–1,200 THB (sharing a twin room), depending on a dam guesthouse or a city hotel.
  • Dam cruise β€” around 100–300 THB/person if split among a group (whole-boat charter 2,000–3,000 THB).
  • 4–5 meals β€” around 500–800 THB; local food is budget-friendly.
  • Fuel + souvenirs β€” around 500–800 THB, depending on distance and what you buy.
  • Estimated total β€” around 1,700–3,100 THB/person, not including car rental.

Saving money

Going as a group of 4–6 makes the whole-boat cruise and the lodging much cheaper per person. As for Phu Lae Lao, camping yourself saves almost the entire night's accommodation cost.

FAQ

How many days do you need for Sirikit Dam?

Half a day to a full day is enough to cover it. If you want to cruise the lake, catch the sunset and wake up to the lake view, plan to stay 1 night in the dam area or around Tha Pla, then loop back to visit Lablae the next day.

How much does a Sirikit Dam cruise cost?

Tour boats are available for whole-boat charter. A large boat holding about 80 people runs around 3,000 THB/hour, while a small one holding about 25 runs around 2,000 THB/hour. It's worth it split among a group; with a small group, ask about kayaking or a raft trip instead.

What should I prepare for Phu Lae Lao?

Phu Lae Lao is in Ban Khok district and needs your own car. The route is a mountain road, so drive it in daylight, and pack a warm jacket, a flashlight and backup food. The camping fee is around 60 THB/tent, and the best window is November to February, with a high chance of the sea of mist.

When is the best time for a nature trip to Uttaradit?

Winter, from November to February, is best: cool, comfortable weather, clear views over the lake and mountains, and a chance of the sea of mist at Phu Lae Lao. If you want to taste fruit from the Lablae orchards, come between May and July.

Can I do this plan without my own car?

It's pretty hard, because Sirikit Dam, Lablae and Phu Lae Lao are in different directions and public transport doesn't reach the sights. The most convenient option is to rent a car or hire a car with a driver in Uttaradit city.
