Where to stay in
Wat Phra Si Mahathat–Bang Khen

Bang Khen is genuine northern Bangkok, not a tourist strip, and its main draw is logistics. The BTS Green line now runs all the way out to Wat Phra Si Mahathat and Royal Thai Air Force stations, so you can ride straight into Siam or Asok without changing lines. Room rates here are clearly cheaper than the city centre, and Don Mueang Airport is only a ten-to-fifteen-minute drive away. Most people who stay choose it for an early flight, a tight budget, a campus visit around Phranakhon Rajabhat or Kasetsart, or simply for a bigger room at a lower price in exchange for being a little out of the centre. Around you are local markets like Ying Charoen, small malls, student canteens and 7-Elevens on every corner, so cheap food is easy to find.

FAQ

Is it convenient to get into town from Wat Phra Si Mahathat–Bang Khen?

Yes, if you use the BTS Green line. Wat Phra Si Mahathat and Royal Thai Air Force are the northern terminus stations, so you can ride straight into Siam or Asok without changing lines, though it takes roughly 40-50 minutes to the centre. If you are in a hurry or out late, allow extra time or take a taxi.

Is this area good for a Don Mueang layover?

Very much so. Don Mueang Airport is only a ten-to-fifteen-minute drive away, several hotels such as Best Western Nada run a free airport shuttle, and rooms cost less than in the centre. Travelers with early departures or late arrivals often spend one night here before moving on.

Is there enough food and convenience shopping nearby?

Plenty, since this is a university and residential district. You have Ying Charoen Market, small malls, student-priced canteens, made-to-order shops and 7-Elevens all around, so cheap food is available all day. For upscale dining or trendy cafes, though, you will want to take the BTS toward the inner city.
