Short answer: Chiang Khan is a charming Mekong town of old wooden houses. Most people stay along Chai Khong Road, with its walking street, cafés and dawn sticky-rice alms-giving; for budget and quiet choose the back lanes off Chai Khong; for river rapids and views head to Kaeng Khut Khu at the east end of town.

FAQ

Where in Chiang Khan should I stay?

Along Chai Khong Road is best — walk to the walking street, the old wooden houses, cafés and the dawn sticky-rice alms-giving, with the full riverside-town feel. For budget and quiet, stay in the back lanes off Chai Khong, a few minutes’ walk to the river.

Do I need to book Chiang Khan ahead in winter?

Book well ahead in the cool season (Nov–Jan), especially on long weekends — Chiang Khan gets very busy and riverside rooms sell out fast. Late bookers often find only rooms away from the river or at higher prices.

What is there at Kaeng Khut Khu?

Kaeng Khut Khu is a rocky rapid in the Mekong at the east end of Chiang Khan, with a local food market (dancing shrimp, coconut candy) and river-view seating. In the dry season the water drops and the rocks show clearly — a nice late-afternoon stop before heading back to Chai Khong Road.
