A flat-topped mountain that takes a climb of over 5 kilometres to reach the plateau. Up top there are wide grasslands, waterfalls, and a sunrise spot at Pha Nok Aen. It's a dream peak for hikers.
An old town on the Mekong with a wooden-house walking street, cafes, and guesthouses lined up along the river. Waking early to give sticky-rice alms along the riverside road is the signature image of this place.
A peak that gets cold enough in winter to form frost, known locally as mae kha ning. It has sea-of-fog and sunrise viewpoints where people camp out overnight to wait for the cold.
A merit-making festival where the people of Dan Sai put on brightly coloured ghost masks and parade through town. It's a local tradition you won't find anywhere else.
A rocky rapid in the middle of the Mekong near Chiang Khan. In the dry season the water drops and the rocks show clearly, with riverside restaurants and crystal coconut sold as souvenirs.
Phu Thok is an easy-to-reach sea-of-fog viewpoint near Chiang Khan, while Phra That Si Song Rak in Dan Sai is an old, revered stupa that the people of Loei hold dear.

Loei's signature food — real local spots, rounded up and ranked
Som tam, laap, koi, grilled chicken, and bold bamboo-shoot soup are found all over the province. It's the everyday, home-style meal for locals in Loei.
The classic Chiang Khan breakfast: a hot pan of eggs with mu yo and Chinese sausage, eaten with bread for dipping. Having it along the riverside road in the morning comes with the atmosphere.
Sweet, crunchy candied coconut is the number-one souvenir of Chiang Khan and Kaeng Khut Khu, in white and other colours, and easy to take home.
Riverside spots around Chiang Khan and Kaeng Khut Khu serve grilled fish, steamed fish, and tom yum made with fish from the Mekong, eaten in the breeze by the water.
The Chiang Khan walking street is full of cafes in old wooden houses. You can sip coffee with a river view or shoot photos of the old-town corners all day.
In the rainy season the mountain districts bring mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and local greens to the markets, used in curries and with chilli dips the way mountain folk eat.
A popular dinner in the town and in Phu Ruea, eaten warm to match the cold weather, especially in winter.
In the evening the walking street has grilled and fried snacks, local sweets, and nibbles to graze on the whole way down.
