Where to stay in Loei

🔄 Updated 20 Jun 2026

Short answer: Loei is a cool, mountainous province. The big draw is Chiang Khan, a Mekong town with a walking street (Chai Khong Road), old wooden houses, cafés and dawn alms-giving. For mountains and cool air choose Phu Ruea with its hillside resorts; Loei town is a handy base for Phu Kradueng and Phu Pa Po and for onward travel.

FAQ

Should I just stay in Chiang Khan when visiting Loei?

Yes, if you want the Mekong-town feel. Chiang Khan has the Chai Khong walking street, old wooden houses, cafés, dawn sticky-rice alms-giving and boat trips to Kaeng Khut Khu. Many stay two nights in Chiang Khan and stop at Phu Ruea or Loei town along the way.

Do I need to book Chiang Khan ahead in winter?

Book well ahead in the cool season (November–January), especially on long weekends — Chiang Khan gets very busy and riverside rooms sell out fast. Late bookers often find only rooms away from the river or at higher prices.

Where do I stay to climb Phu Kradueng?

Phu Kradueng is a self-hike with overnight camping or park lodges on the plateau (book with the park ahead); it closes in the rainy season (June–September). The night before, many stay in Loei town or Phu Kradueng district to start the climb early.
