Short answer: For a first visit stay in the city center around the Clock Tower and Night Bazaar — easiest for walking, eating and onward transport. For quiet and views choose the Kok riverside; quiet resorts near the sights (White Temple, tea plantations) are out of town and need a car.

FAQ

Where should I stay in Chiang Rai for a first visit?

The city center around the Clock Tower and Night Bazaar is best — walkable for food and sights, near the market and bus terminal, with rooms for every budget and easy transport to the White Temple or tea farms.

The White Temple is about 15 minutes out of town by car. There are some quiet resorts nearby, but without a car it is more convenient to stay in town and visit on a trip out.

Two to three days is ideal for the White Temple, Blue Temple, tea plantations and the surrounding mountains. Many come from Chiang Mai for 1–2 nights.
