Where to stay in Lopburi

🔄 Updated 20 Jun 2026

Short answer: Lopburi is the city of monkeys and ancient ruins. The old town around Phra Prang Sam Yot and the railway station is the best base — walk to King Narai’s Palace, the old temples and the night market (but mind the monkeys). For newer, quieter hotels without monkeys choose the new town to the east; in winter, sunflower-season trips lean toward the Pa Sak Jolasid Dam area.

FAQ

Lopburi — old town or new town?

If you are here mainly for the monkeys, Phra Prang Sam Yot and the ruins, the old town near the station is better — you can walk to everything, though keep your room sealed up as the monkeys are everywhere. For newer, quieter, monkey-free hotels, choose the new town to the east.

Can I day-trip Lopburi?

Yes — Lopburi is about 2.5 hours from Bangkok by train, and many visit Phra Prang Sam Yot and King Narai’s Palace as a day trip. But staying one night lets you enjoy the town in the evening and the night market without rushing.

How do I stay safe around the Lopburi monkeys?

Keep glasses, hats, food bags and anything shiny out of sight, and do not carry plastic bags or food past the troops, especially around Phra Prang Sam Yot and the Kala Shrine. Shut room and car windows and doors tightly — the monkeys here are used to people and quick to grab.
