Khao Kho is known for hill-view resorts and morning mist, good for families and couples, with view balconies, cafés and photo spots. It is cool year-round and cold in winter; a car helps, as the resorts and sights are spread along the hillsides.

Khao Kho is the easier, more comfortable resort zone, while Phu Thap Boek is higher and much colder, focused on tents and Hmong homestays at the summit for the sea of mist and sunrise. The access road is steep and needs careful driving — more for campers than resort-goers.

Winter (November–January) is the prettiest — cool air, thick mist and blooming flower fields — but it is crowded and rooms in Khao Kho and Phu Thap Boek sell out fast, so book well ahead, especially on long weekends. The rains are green and lovely too, though mist and showers can hide the views.
