Short answer: Phitsanulok has clearly different stay zones. For temples and as a stopover toward Sukhothai, stay in the city by the Nan River near Wat Phra Buddha Chinnarat and the night market; for waterfalls and rafting choose the Khek River resorts on Route 12 (Kaeng Song/Wang Thong); and for mountains and cool air, Phu Hin Rong Kla / Nakhon Thai.

FAQ

Where is best to stay in Phitsanulok?

For a first visit or a stopover toward Sukhothai, the city by the Nan River is best — walk to Wat Phra Buddha Chinnarat (Wat Yai), browse the night market and connect easily by train or bus. For nature, choose the Khek River on Route 12 or head up to the mountains at Phu Hin Rong Kla.

Where do I stay for Phu Hin Rong Kla?

You can stay in bungalows or camp inside Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, or pick a resort in nearby Nakhon Thai district, about 100 km from Phitsanulok city — bring your own car. It is cool and busy in the winter, when rooms sell out fast, so book ahead.

Is the Route 12 (Kaeng Song) riverside good to stay?

Good for nature lovers — the Phitsanulok–Lom Sak Route 12 follows the Khek River, with riverside resorts, the Kaeng Song and Kaeng Sopha waterfalls and rafting in the high-water months (Jul–Oct). It is a nature stop between the city and the mountains, handy for an overnight before Phu Hin Rong Kla or Khao Kho.
