Short answer: Ranong is Thailand’s rainiest province, known for hot springs and as a gateway to quiet islands. For the town and hot springs stay in Ranong town (Raksawarin hot springs, the Myanmar border, markets); for islands and quiet beaches cross to Koh Phayam (Ao Yai/Ao Khao Kwai, a laid-back backpacker scene); Koh Chang Ranong is quieter and more rustic still, for really getting away.

FAQ

Ranong — stay in town or on an island?

For the hot springs, a hop to Myanmar or a stopover, Ranong town is most convenient — but the town has no beach. For the sea, cross to Koh Phayam with its quiet beaches and clear water, about 1–2 hours by boat from Ranong’s pier.

How do I reach Koh Phayam, and is it open year-round?

Take a boat from Ranong’s pier — a speedboat in about 45 minutes to an hour, or a slow boat in around two hours. High season for clear water and good beaches is November–April; in the monsoon (May–October) it rains a lot, sailings thin out and some resorts close, so check first.

Where are the hot springs in Ranong?

The Raksawarin hot springs are near Ranong town — natural springs of about 40–65°C with public pools for soaking and mineral spas. Staying in town makes them easy to reach, and several Ranong hotels pipe the mineral water into their rooms.
