Bangkok vs Pattaya which to choose?

Short answer: It is less either/or and more complementary. Bangkok is the do-everything capital — temples, shopping, food, nightlife — but has no beach. Pattaya is the closest beach city (~2h drive) with sand, Koh Larn island and nightlife. Many do Bangkok then add 1–2 nights in Pattaya for a beach fix.

Which should you choose?

  • Focus on Bangkok if you are here for the city — temples, shopping, food and varied nightlife
  • Add Pattaya if you want an easy beach-and-nightlife fix, just a ~2h drive away
  • Do both — Bangkok 3–4 days + Pattaya 1–2 nights makes a tidy city-plus-beach trip

FAQ

Does Bangkok have a beach, or do I need Pattaya?

Bangkok has no beach. The easiest beach add-on is Pattaya, about a 2-hour drive, with a city beach and the nicer-water Koh Larn — a good way to add some sea to a Bangkok trip.

Can I do Pattaya as a day trip from Bangkok?

Yes, but staying one night is better so you can visit Koh Larn and enjoy the evening nightlife. A there-and-back day trip is possible too via minivan/bus, about 2 hours each way.

For families, Bangkok or Pattaya?

They pair well — Bangkok has museums, zoos and malls for kids, while Pattaya has water parks, Koh Larn and shows. If staying in Pattaya with family, pick the quieter Jomtien side.
