If you only have time for one stop in Chai Nat, most people pick the bird park. It's close to the town centre, easy to reach, and works for the whole family. The park sits in Khao Tha Phra subdistrict, Mueang Chai Nat district, right off the Asia Highway, just past the turn-off into town. What sets it apart from an ordinary zoo is the huge aviary, where the birds live in a fairly natural setting and visitors are allowed to walk in among them, so you see the birds much closer than you'd expect.
The giant walk-in aviary where you see birds up close
The star of the park is the large aviary, often described as one of the biggest in Asia. Inside it feels like a small recreated forest, with trees, a little waterfall and many species of bird flying freely. You follow the set walkways around the enclosure, and some birds perch close enough to the path for a sharp photo. You'll see peacocks, cranes, storks, water birds and small colourful species, and across the whole park there are more than 100 bird species, both in the big aviary and in separate display sections.
Tip
Early in the morning after opening and in the late afternoon, the birds are more active and move around more than during the midday heat. If you want to catch birds in flight and get nicer photos, come a bit earlier for a better atmosphere.

Birds you'll see in the park
- Peacocks — some wander along the walkways, and if you're lucky you'll catch one fanning its tail. A favourite with kids.
- Cranes and storks — tall, long-legged birds in the waterbird zone. They look elegant and are easy to photograph because they move slowly.
- Parrots and macaws — bright, colourful birds that kids get excited about. At some points staff are on hand so you can get a closer look.
- Water birds and ducks — found in the ponds inside the big aviary, swimming close to the walkway.
- Small colourful birds — perched on branches inside the aviary; you have to look for them slowly, which is a fun little game for kids.
The mini zoo and other zones in the park
Beyond the birds, Chai Nat Bird Park has other zones to keep exploring, which stretches the visit out and makes the entry fee feel worth it. It suits families who want their kids to see animals and learn a bit at the same time.
Small animal display area
There are smaller animals to round out the visit, such as iguanas roaming in the display section and small mammals, so kids can see them up close.
Fish tunnel / freshwater fish museum
Walk through a tunnel to see freshwater fish from the Chao Phraya River and local species. A cool, shaded spot to get out of the sun.
Bird egg museum
A display of various bird eggs and information about birds, an easy, low-key way for kids to learn something.
Planetarium
An on-site planetarium covering stars and space, with scheduled show times. Check the showtimes at the ticket counter.

Straight talk
Entry fees and opening hours for each zone get adjusted from time to time, and some zones like the planetarium may have limited show times. It's worth calling to check or looking at the Chai Nat Bird Park page before your trip, especially if you're coming specifically for one particular zone.
Why it works for families
What makes Chai Nat Bird Park a good family outing is that everything is in one place, all within walking distance, so you don't have to drive between stops. Kids get to see real animals, walk inside the aviary, watch fish in the tunnel, and there are indoor spots to escape the sun along the way. The entry fee isn't expensive either, so bringing the whole family is no problem. Inside there are restaurants and rest areas to sit and grab a drink at intervals, which suits parents bringing small children or elderly relatives along.
- Bringing small children — the paths are mostly flat, you can push a stroller across most of it, and there are rest stops
- Bring water and a hat — some sections are out in the open and the midday sun is strong
- Allow extra time for kids to linger — children tend to get stuck at the aviary and fish tunnel longer than you'd expect
Where to go next nearby
The bird park is close to the town centre and the Chao Phraya Dam, which makes it easy to build a day trip around it. After walking the bird park in the morning, you can drive on in the afternoon to see the Chao Phraya Dam, visit temples in town, or find a riverside meal along the Chao Phraya. It's a tidy route for families doing Chai Nat as a day trip.
