Chai Nat With the Family
Bird Park, Dam, Feeding Fish

Chai Nat is a small province that's easy to enjoy with kids: in-town distances are short, plenty of spots have shade, and there's a full lineup children love, from seeing birds up close to walking through a fish tunnel and tossing bread to the fish below the dam. We've put together a relaxed 2-day, 1-night plan, broken into day-by-day blocks you can follow without rushing.

If you've got young kids in the car, the thing you dread most is a long drive that ends in a meltdown. Chai Nat handles that well, because the main stops like Chai Nat Bird Park and Chao Phraya Dam are only a ten-minute to half-hour drive from town. You can pack a lot into one day without long stretches in the car. Our plan has you up early for the Bird Park before the sun gets harsh, then heading to the river later in the day when it's easier to walk around.

This plan was written after checking the latest opening hours and entry fees, but prices and activity schedules can shift. Before you set out, it's worth calling ahead or checking each place's Facebook page again, especially if you're going on a weekday, since some of the water features and rides only run on Saturdays and Sundays.

Day 1 β€” Chai Nat Bird Park, a Full Day for Kids

The star of a Chai Nat family trip is Chai Nat Bird Park, set on Khao Phlong hill beside the Asia Highway, just a few kilometers from town. It's a bird park with a huge walk-in aviary where you're actually among the birds, plus a freshwater fish tunnel, a small zoo, a playground, and a water zone. Kids can wander around all day.

Day 1

Khao Phlong Β· Chai Nat Bird Park

08:30
Arrive at Chai Nat Bird Park right as the gates open and buy ticketsEntry for Thais is about 30 THB for adults and 15 THB for kids (prices may change). Getting there early means it's not yet hot, so walking around the birds is more comfortable.
09:00
Walk through the large aviary with all kinds of birds flying around youIt's the walk-in kind of aviary, so kids get a thrill from how close the birds are. Hold little ones' hands and don't let them chase the birds.
10:30
Go into the freshwater fish tunnel and watch Chao Phraya River fish swim overheadThis is the kids' favorite spot. Big fish glide right over your head, and it's cool and shaded inside, perfect for getting out of the late-morning sun.
11:30
Stop by the bird egg museum to see eggs of many sizes, including giant onesIt's a quick walk-through. Older kids find it interesting and can pose for photos with the big eggs.
12:00
Have lunch at a restaurant inside the Bird Park or drive out to eat in townThere are restaurants and snacks inside the park. If you want more options, the town of Chai Nat is a short drive away.
13:30
Let the kids loose on the playground and in the water zoneSome of the water zone and rides mainly open on weekends, so pack a change of clothes and a towel if you're visiting on a holiday.
15:30
Pay respects at the Luang Pu Suk statue in the park, then head back to your accommodationBy late afternoon the kids start to flag, so head back to your place in town for a rest before dinner.
18:00
Keep dinner simple in Chai Nat town, then turn in earlyTomorrow is a riverside day, so save the kids' energy.

Tips for taking kids to the Bird Park

Bring your own hat, sunscreen, and drinking water, since you'll be walking in the open for long stretches. A stroller works on the main paths, but some spots are on a slope, so for very young kids, carrying them or using a baby carrier is more practical.

Day 2 β€” Chao Phraya Dam, Feeding Fish, and a Riverside Temple

Day two switches things up with a riverside scene. Chao Phraya Dam was Thailand's first diversion dam, located in Sapphaya district, less than half an hour's drive from town. Below the dam there's a fish market and a spot kids love: buy bread or fish food and toss it to the schools of fish in the river, where there are so many fish the water churns in circles.

Day 2

Sapphaya Β· Wat Sing

08:00
Have breakfast at the market by the dam or a riverside restaurantAround the dam there are breakfast spots and a fish market, where you can happily wander and look at fresh river fish.
09:30
Walk up onto the crest of Chao Phraya Dam to see the floodgates and the wide river viewIt's breezy and the photos come out nicely. Hold the kids' hands, since it's high up beside the water.
10:30
Buy fish food and head down to feed the fish below the damThis is the kids' most fun activity of the day, with fish rising up in schools to grab the food. Watch that the kids don't get so excited they lean over too far.
12:00
Lunch at a fish restaurant by the dam, with dishes like fried or boiled river fishThe riverside restaurants near the dam serve fresh river fish, and kids can keep it simple with rice and fried fish.
13:30
Drive to Wat Pak Khlong Makham Thao (Luang Pu Suk's temple) in Wat Sing districtIt's about 25 km from town and has another spot to feed fish in the river beside the temple, so the kids can toss food to the fish again.
14:30
View the murals and Luang Pu Suk's old wooden monk's quartersIt's a shaded walk, older kids can take in the old paintings, and the grown-ups can make merit before heading home.
15:30
Pick up some local treats, then set off homeChai Nat souvenirs include pomelo and local sweets, which you can find around the markets in town.

How to feed the fish safely

Buy fish food from the local vendors on site, don't let kids eat the bread that's mixed in with the fish food, and stand a sensible distance back from the water's edge. Keep hold of little ones' hands the whole time, since the swarm of rising fish can get kids so excited they lean over too far.

Extra Stops, If the Kids Are Still Up for It

If your family has more time, or the kids still have energy to burn, here are a few extra stops that fit in without straying far from the main plan. Pick and choose based on the kids' mood that day.

Near Bird Park

Khao Phlong

A low hill near the Bird Park with a Buddha image and a view over town. It's a short walk up, good for a quick stop before or after the Bird Park.

Riverside

Fish market below the dam

The market beneath Chao Phraya Dam, with fresh river fish and local snacks. It's a pleasant wander with kids and easy on the wallet.

In town

Chao Phraya riverfront in town

A riverside hangout in Chai Nat town, good for letting the kids run around in the evening with a cool breeze.

Getting Ready Before Taking Kids to Chai Nat

  • Driving yourself is by far the easiest β€” the sights are spread across different districts and public transport within the province is limited, so having your own car is much more practical with kids.
  • Pick accommodation in town β€” it's central, with the Bird Park in one direction and the dam in the other, plus restaurants and convenience stores all around.
  • Go on a weekend if you want water play β€” the water zone and some rides mainly open on Saturdays and Sundays, so if you're set on letting the kids splash around, check that they're running that day.
  • Pack the kids' gear β€” hats, sunscreen, drinking water, a change of clothes, and snacks, since you'll be walking in the open and out of town for long stretches.
  • Start early, wrap up by afternoon β€” the Chai Nat sun is harsh around midday, so slot outdoor activities into the morning, then rest or head somewhere shaded in the afternoon, and the kids won't get too worn out.

FAQ

Where's the best place to take young kids in Chai Nat?

Chai Nat Bird Park is the spot kids love most, with a large walk-in aviary where you can see birds up close, a freshwater fish tunnel, a playground, and a water zone, enough to fill most of the day. After that, feeding fish below Chao Phraya Dam is the next big hit.

How much is entry to Chai Nat Bird Park?

For Thais it's around 30 THB for adults and 15 THB for kids, with foreigners paying a little more. Prices may change, so it's worth checking the Chai Nat Bird Park Facebook page before you go, especially if you plan to use the water zone, which may cost extra.

Where can you feed fish in Chai Nat?

The most popular spot is below Chao Phraya Dam in Sapphaya district, where river fish rise up in schools. Another spot is by the river at Wat Pak Khlong Makham Thao in Wat Sing district. You can buy fish food on site at both, and both are good for kids.
