Chanthaburi 1-Day Itinerary
Riverside–Cathedral–Gem Market

What makes Chanthaburi old town fun is how close everything sits together — you can cover most of the day on foot. Start at the Chanthaboon Riverside Community, a century-old neighborhood along the Chanthaburi River, then cross the bridge to pay your respects at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the largest Catholic church in Thailand, and finish at the Si Chan Road gem market, the biggest gem-trading spot in the country. This plan is built for real walking and real sightseeing across one full day.

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

If you only have one day in Chanthaburi, these three spots are the heart of the old town and well worth your time, because they all sit within walking distance of one another. The Chanthaboon Riverside Community and the cathedral are split only by the Chanthaburi River, with a bridge connecting the two banks, while the gem market is a short way off around Si Chan Road. You can reach everything on foot or with a quick ride. The one thing to plan around: the gem market is only open Friday to Sunday, so if you want to catch the buzz of traders working the street, come on a weekend.

One-day trip at a glance

  • Morning — walk the Chanthaboon Riverside Community, snack on old-school local food, and check out the heritage houses and street art
  • Late morning–noon — cross the bridge to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to see the gem-studded statue of Our Lady and the stained glass
  • Afternoon — walk the Si Chan Road gem market and watch the traders buying and selling for real
  • Evening — sit at a riverside cafe or finish with a plate of sen chan phat pu (crab-fried Chanthaburi noodles) before heading back

Pick the right day

Plan your trip for a Friday, Saturday or Sunday to hit all three spots, since the gem market only runs on those three days, roughly 10:00–15:00. The riverside community and the cathedral are open daily, but the shops in the community are busiest on weekends.

An hour-by-hour walking plan

Morning

Chanthaboon Riverside Community

08:30
Start at the Chanthaboon Riverside Community on Sukhaphiban RoadPark near the temple grounds or along the road close to the community, then walk into the long lane that runs beside the river. There are still few people around in the morning, so it's easy to photograph the old wooden houses.
09:00
Stop by the House No. 69 learning center and Boonyatthithi HouseHouse No. 69 is a century-old home that displays the way of life in the community, while Boonyatthithi House is a building around 150 years old. Both are free to enter and easy to wander through.
09:45
See the street art and the old Chinese medicine shop, Chang Guan AnAn old Chinese pharmacy that still has its wooden herb drawers and the smell of dried herbs — a favorite photo corner. Along the way there are wall paintings telling stories of Chanthaburi at intervals.
10:15
Try the old-school local food in the communityRocket Brand Ice Cream is the community's legendary shop, with a childhood-nostalgia flavor. There's also Jay Iad noodles, kanom kai (egg sponge cakes), and soft rice crackers with a local dipping sauce — prices start in the low double digits (THB).
Late morning–noon

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

11:00
Cross the suspension bridge to the cathedral sideThe cathedral sits across the river from the riverside community, separated by the Chanthaburi River. It's only a few minutes' walk across the bridge, and the river views on both banks are lovely.
11:15
See inside the cathedral, the gem-studded statue of Our Lady, and the stained glassThe largest Catholic church in Thailand, its highlights are the two pointed bell towers, the boat-hull ceiling, and the statue of Our Lady set with more than 200,000 gemstones. Open roughly Monday–Saturday 08:30–14:00.
12:00
Stop for lunch around the old townSen chan phat pu (crab-fried Chanthaburi noodles) is the local signature, found at many shops around the old town, or you can head back for a seafood tom yum noodle soup in the riverside community.

Etiquette inside the cathedral

This is an active place of worship, so dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, keep your voice down, and avoid visiting during Mass. If you're not sure of the times, check the cathedral's page before you go to be safe.

Afternoon

Gem Market, Si Chan Road

13:30
Walk the Si Chan Road–Trok Krachang gem marketThe biggest gem-trading spot in Thailand, open Friday–Sunday roughly 10:00–15:00. You'll see traders' tables lined up on both sides of the street, sorting stones with loupes — a sight that's hard to find anywhere else.
14:15
Browse the gem shops and shop for gem-related souvenirsIf you're not set on buying a big stone, you can still walk around and take in the real trading scene. First-timers shouldn't rush to buy — gems come in many grades and prices, so ask around and compare several sellers first.
15:00
Find a riverside cafe to wrap up the tripBack around the riverside community there are several cafes, like C.A.P Cafe and People, decorated in an industrial style mixed with greenery. Sip a coffee by the river before heading home.

Getting around and parking

All three spots sit close together in the old-town area, so walking is the best way to get around. The lanes in the riverside community are narrow and one-way, which makes driving in awkward. The tip is to find parking near the temple grounds or along the roads on the edge of the community and walk in. Some places to stay in town also offer a shuttle to the community.

  • On foot — the riverside community and the cathedral connect across the bridge, and the gem market isn't far off
  • Private car — park on the outskirts of the community and walk in to avoid the narrow lanes
  • Motorbike taxi / hired ride — handy if you don't feel like walking back from the gem market to the riverside

Leave enough time

Taking it easy and unhurried, these three spots fill about half a day to most of a day, which leaves the evening free to move on somewhere else — like driving out to the sea at Laem Sing or Chao Lao Beach if you want to end the day with an ocean view.
