If you only have one day in Chanthaburi, these three spots are the heart of the old town and well worth your time, because they all sit within walking distance of one another. The Chanthaboon Riverside Community and the cathedral are split only by the Chanthaburi River, with a bridge connecting the two banks, while the gem market is a short way off around Si Chan Road. You can reach everything on foot or with a quick ride. The one thing to plan around: the gem market is only open Friday to Sunday, so if you want to catch the buzz of traders working the street, come on a weekend.
One-day trip at a glance
- Morning — walk the Chanthaboon Riverside Community, snack on old-school local food, and check out the heritage houses and street art
- Late morning–noon — cross the bridge to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to see the gem-studded statue of Our Lady and the stained glass
- Afternoon — walk the Si Chan Road gem market and watch the traders buying and selling for real
- Evening — sit at a riverside cafe or finish with a plate of sen chan phat pu (crab-fried Chanthaburi noodles) before heading back
Pick the right day
Plan your trip for a Friday, Saturday or Sunday to hit all three spots, since the gem market only runs on those three days, roughly 10:00–15:00. The riverside community and the cathedral are open daily, but the shops in the community are busiest on weekends.
Book the activities in your Chanthaburi trip ahead

An hour-by-hour walking plan
Chanthaboon Riverside Community
Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
Etiquette inside the cathedral
This is an active place of worship, so dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, keep your voice down, and avoid visiting during Mass. If you're not sure of the times, check the cathedral's page before you go to be safe.
Gem Market, Si Chan Road
Food you shouldn't miss along the way
Sen chan phat pu (crab-fried noodles)
Chanthaburi's signature dish — chewy sen chan rice noodles stir-fried with fresh crab meat in a well-balanced sauce. Found at many shops around the old town, this is the one plate you have to try in Chanthaburi.
Rocket Brand Ice Cream
The legendary ice cream shop of the riverside community, with old-fashioned flavors that locals grew up on. Several flavors to cool you down while you walk.
Jay Iad noodles
A long-running noodle shop in the community, served generously with plenty of toppings — a light meal while you wander the riverside lane.
Seafood tom yum noodles
A coastal town means fresh seafood — a rich tom yum broth packed with seafood. Another dish people love to order in the old-town area.
Kanom kai and local sweets
Fragrant egg sponge cakes and old-recipe Thai sweets that have been sold in the community for decades. Good to take home as gifts.
Soft rice crackers with dipping sauce
A local Chanthaburi snack — soft dough sheets wrapped around a filling and topped with a punchy dipping sauce. Find it around the riverside community.
Getting around and parking
All three spots sit close together in the old-town area, so walking is the best way to get around. The lanes in the riverside community are narrow and one-way, which makes driving in awkward. The tip is to find parking near the temple grounds or along the roads on the edge of the community and walk in. Some places to stay in town also offer a shuttle to the community.
- On foot — the riverside community and the cathedral connect across the bridge, and the gem market isn't far off
- Private car — park on the outskirts of the community and walk in to avoid the narrow lanes
- Motorbike taxi / hired ride — handy if you don't feel like walking back from the gem market to the riverside
Leave enough time
Taking it easy and unhurried, these three spots fill about half a day to most of a day, which leaves the evening free to move on somewhere else — like driving out to the sea at Laem Sing or Chao Lao Beach if you want to end the day with an ocean view.
