A lot of people assume you need to drive yourself to Chanthaburi. You really don't. You can walk the entire old town, and the highlights — the Chanthaboon riverside community, the cathedral, and the gem market — are all close together. For Namtok Phlio waterfall and Laem Sing, there are songthaews (locals call them Mazda trucks) running set routes. This plan sticks to walking plus public transport, which suits solo travelers or a budget-minded pair.
Budget overview, 2 days 1 night
Round-trip bus from Bangkok ~440 THB · hostel/guesthouse bed in town ~400–600 THB/night · 3–4 meals ~300–400 THB · songthaew plus waterfall entry ~150–250 THB · total per person around 1,400–1,800 THB, cheaper still if you share a double room.
The cheapest way to get to Chanthaburi
The cheapest and easiest option is a bus or minivan from Bangkok. Catch one at Ekkamai Bus Terminal (Eastern line) or Mo Chit 2. The ride takes about 4 hours to Chanthaburi bus terminal. Bus tickets start around 218–250 THB one way, depending on the company and departure time. You can book ahead on the usual ticket sites. On long weekends, book early — seats fill up fast.
- Ekkamai → Chanthaburi — buses from around 218 THB · several departures from morning to evening · ~4 hrs.
- Mo Chit 2 (Chatuchak) — also has minivan and bus services, handy if you're staying on the north side of Bangkok.
- From Chanthaburi bus terminal into the old town — a songthaew or motorcycle taxi runs a few dozen THB, or just grab a Grab. It's not far.
Money-saving tip
Pick a place to stay in the old town or near the riverside community. You'll be able to walk to every in-town highlight without paying for transport all day, saving both money and time.
Book the activities in your Chanthaburi trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Day 1 — Walk the old town for free, plus the evening market
Chanthaburi old town, a full day of walking that barely costs a thing
On the first day you barely pay any admission, because the town's highlights — the riverside community, the cathedral, and the gem market (if you're there Friday to Sunday) — are all free to wander. Your main costs today are just food and lodging.
Day 2 — Namtok Phlio waterfall by songthaew
On the second day, head out of town to Namtok Phlio without renting a car. The songthaew stand (Mazda trucks) for the Phlio–Laem Sing route parks near Nam Phu Market in town. Ask the driver to drop you at the entrance to Namtok Phlio National Park. The fare is just a few dozen THB each way. Check the price and the return times with the driver before you board — it's reassuring to know.

Cheap, tasty food you shouldn't miss
A tight budget doesn't mean bad food. Chanthaburi has local dishes that are hard to find elsewhere, at friendly prices. We've ranked them by value and how distinctive they are to the town.
Sen Chan crab fried noodles
Chanthaburi's orange rice noodles stir-fried with crab and seafood, with a balanced sweet-sour flavor. It's the town's signature dish and a must-try when you visit. Old-school spots like Chantharophochana make the original recipe.
Pa Tid's moo liang pork noodles
Liang-style noodles in a fragrant herbal broth, true Chanthaburi style. The shop's been around town for ages, prices are friendly, and one bowl fills you up.
Je Phen's crab and mantis shrimp yen ta fo
Yen ta fo loaded with crab and mantis shrimp in a well-simmered broth. From around 100 THB you get a packed bowl — great value for seafood lovers on a budget.
Nam Phu Market eats
An evening market in the town center where you can graze dinner across plenty of options — fried snacks, khanom jeen, and homestyle sweets. Finish a meal for just over a hundred THB. Free to enter.
Coffee and sweets in the riverside community
Little cafes inside old wooden riverside buildings — a nice place to rest in the shade and sip affordable coffee with an old-town view.
Budget rooms in Chanthaburi for a few hundred THB
Chanthaburi town has plenty of guesthouses and rooms in the few-hundred-THB range, especially in the old town and riverside areas. Room rates run from the high hundreds up to around a thousand-something THB per night. If two of you share a double room, the per-person cost drops a lot.
Guesthouse in the riverside community
A renovated old wooden building within walking distance of every in-town sight — ideal if you're exploring on foot without a car.
Hostel or budget room in town
Plain, clean rooms near Nam Phu Market and the songthaew stand, so getting out to the waterfall is easy.
Booking smart
Compare prices in a booking app ahead of time and pick somewhere within walking distance of the riverside community — that cuts in-town transport costs for the whole trip. Check real reviews for cleanliness and noise before you hit book.
Approximate cost breakdown (per person)
- Round-trip bus from Bangkok — ~440 THB (from 218 THB per leg)
- 1 night's lodging — ~400–600 THB (cheaper if you share a double room)
- 3–4 meals — ~300–400 THB including local dishes and the evening market
- Songthaew round trip to the waterfall — ~80–150 THB
- Namtok Phlio entry (Thai rate) — 40 THB

Straight talk
These numbers are a realistic frame for budget travelers who stick to walking plus public transport. If you want to reach farther spots like Khao Khitchakut (only open seasonally) or the Chao Lao–Laem Sing beaches on the same day, transport costs go up. Budget extra, or team up to charter a Mazda truck and split the cost — that works out cheaper.
