Thailand ranks among the destinations Muslim travelers choose most often, because halal food is available in cities and tourist areas, there are mosques and prayer rooms, and the culture is welcoming. The most convenient region is the south, with its dense Muslim communities and halal on every corner, while big cities like Bangkok also have plenty of halal districts and restaurants to choose from.
How to find halal food
💡 Eating halal with peace of mind
Certified restaurants display the green halal certification mark (certified by Thailand's Central Islamic body). Look for it at the storefront or on the menu.
Just say the word "halal" — Thais understand it. Muslim-run restaurants or places with an Islamic food sign are a safe bet.
Halal restaurant-finder apps and maps make it easy to find nearby restaurants and mosques, especially in cities where halal spots are spread out.
Khao mok gai (chicken biryani), mataba/murtabak, roti, beef soup, and southern Muslim-style dishes are easy to find at Islamic restaurants.
Cities and regions where halal is easy to find
The South (Hat Yai & the border provinces)
The Muslim region with the most halal — restaurants, mosques, and a familiar atmosphere. Hat Yai is a popular hub for Malaysian travelers.
Big cityBangkok
Several halal districts and restaurants, including areas near mosques. The big malls have prayer rooms, and it's easy to get around.
Beach + halalPhuket & Krabi
Beach destinations with Muslim communities and halal restaurants scattered about — not hard to find in the tourist areas.
The NorthChiang Mai
Has an old Muslim quarter in the heart of the city plus halal restaurants — great for anyone who wants to explore the north without worrying about food.
Prayer and hotels
Prayer rooms are available in many large malls and at major airports (such as Suvarnabhumi), while mosques are found throughout cities and are especially dense in the south. As for where to stay, many Muslim-friendly hotels provide the qibla direction, a prayer mat, and a halal breakfast, particularly in the south and at international chains. We recommend confirming with the hotel before booking, and during Ramadan it's worth checking restaurants' opening and closing hours in advance.
