Koh Lipe sits within Tarutao National Park in Satun province. It's a small island where everything is within walking distance, with three main beaches: Pattaya Beach — the liveliest, home to the Walking Street with its restaurants and bars; Sunrise Beach on the east side, where the shallow clear water is great for a morning swim; and Sunset Beach on the west side, quieter, a small rocky cove that's perfect for watching the sun set behind Koh Adang. This plan gives couples a balance of quiet time and activity without packing the days too tight.
Before you plan — the seasons and what to know
Koh Lipe runs on a season. The water is at its best and the boats run reliably from November to April. During the southwest monsoon, May to October, the sea gets rough, rain is heavy, and many hotels and restaurants close. Ferries from Pak Bara may cut their runs or skip some days entirely. If you're going in this window, always check the weather and the boat schedule well in advance.
- National park fee — there's an entry fee for Tarutao National Park (cheaper for Thais than foreigners), collected at the landing point. Keep your receipt, since some snorkeling trips will need to see it again.
- Things cost more on the island — everything is shipped across the sea, so drinking water, food, and accommodation are noticeably pricier than on the mainland. Budget a bit extra.
- Cash — there are only a handful of ATMs and the queues are long. Many small shops take cash only, so bring enough.
- Electricity — some places run on generators and may have daytime power cuts. Check with your accommodation before booking.
- Protect the sea — don't touch or take coral or coral rock home, keep your sunscreen off the reef, and carry your trash back to the mainland every time.
Getting there
Most people take a van from Hat Yai or the airport to Pak Bara pier in Satun, then transfer to a ferry or speedboat across to Koh Lipe. The whole trip takes several hours, so set aside a full travel day. On arrival, a longtail boat ferries you from the larger boat in to the beach, with a separate landing fee charged on top.
Book the activities in your Koh Lipe trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
The 3-day, 2-night plan for couples
Arrive, settle into a quiet beach, then a beachfront dinner
A half-day of coral snorkeling, an afternoon to relax, seafood in the evening
A quiet morning before the boat back
Beachfront dinner spots and sunset bars
Koh Lipe has all kinds of beachfront restaurants and bars, from local seafood to steak and Western food. Couples after a private feel should look for a place with tables on the sand or a direct sea view. And if you'd rather sip a drink and watch the sun go down, Sunset Beach and the bars along Sunrise Beach do the job nicely.
On The Rocks (Serendipity, Sunrise Beach)
An open-air sea-view restaurant catching the breeze, with Thai, Asian, seafood, and international dishes. Comfortable for a long, relaxed meal — good for a dinner for two.
Rak Talay Seafood
A seafood place with a wide range of options — fish, prawns, fresh squid — focused on the day's catch. Right for a couple who want a full seafood meal.
The Steak House Lipe
A Western-meets-local steak house with a sea view and live music in the evening. Upstairs is Shine Bar, where you can sip a cocktail and watch the sunset.
Sugoi Teppanyaki
A Japanese teppanyaki spot with an experienced chef, sashimi, and seafood grilled in front of you. A special meal for a couple wanting a change from Thai seafood.
Paolo's Italian Pizza
Italian wood-fired pizza with fresh-baked dough at friendly prices. Good for an easy night when you don't feel like a heavy meal.
Sea La Vie Bar
A bohemian beach bar on Sunrise Beach, open from late morning into the night, with kayaks to borrow. Chill in the afternoon or have a drink in the evening.
Zodiac See Sun Beach Bar
An island-style wooden bar decorated with natural materials, with photogenic corners and deep-house tracks. A nice place to hang out on the sand.
Shine Bar
The upstairs bar at The Steak House on Pattaya Beach — a cocktail with a sunset view, a spot for two in the evening light.
Ordering seafood without the bill running away
Most seafood on the island is charged by weight. Ask the price per kilo and have it weighed in front of you before it's cooked, every time. Order a dish at a time and top up as you go — you'll keep the budget under control better than ordering a big pile all at once.
Diving and things to do on the water
There are plenty of snorkeling and dive sites around Koh Lipe within Tarutao National Park — clear water, lots of coral and fish. November to April brings the best water and visibility, while during the monsoon some sites are off-limits and the park rotates closures to let the coral recover. Choose a certified dive operator with guides who keep a close eye on you.
- Island-hopping snorkel trips — stopping at several spots such as Koh Adang, Koh Yang, and Hin Ngam. Good for a couple who can swim, no certification needed.
- Fun dives — for those already certified. Several operators to choose from, such as Adang Sea Divers, Forra Diving, and Koh Lipe Diving School.
- Dive courses — Open Water courses for beginners take several days, so build in the time if you want to learn.
- Private longtail charter — couples who want quiet can hire a boat to take just them to beaches and dive spots, away from the bustle of the group trips.
Water safety
Always check the weather and swell with the operator before heading out. Wear a life jacket, listen to the full guide briefing, don't force it into the water if the sea is rough or the current is strong, and never touch or stand on the coral.
Sunset at Sunset Beach — the heart of a couple's trip
If there's one moment a couple shouldn't miss, it's sunset at Sunset Beach on the west side of the island. It's a small rocky cove with fewer people than the other beaches, and the sun goes down behind Koh Adang for a backdrop. It's a short walk across the island from Pattaya Beach — get there by around 17:00–17:30 for the good spots and the soft evening light for a photo together.
Sunset Beach
A rocky cove on the west side, quiet and calm, with the sun setting behind Koh Adang and small beach bars to sit and have a drink.
Sunrise Beach
On the east side, with shallow clear water — good for an early sunrise and a daytime swim, and quieter than Pattaya Beach.
Sunset cruise
Boat trips head out to watch the sun set from the water, some with drinks and dinner on board. Nice for a special occasion.
