Koh Samui is easy and rewarding — morning at Big Buddha or the waterfall, afternoon on an Ang Thong or Koh Tao tour, evening strolling Bophut Fisherman's Village. The key point: the Gulf of Thailand has a different season from the Andaman, so when Phuket and Krabi are in monsoon (May–Oct), Samui is perfectly fine across many months. Almost every tour can be booked in advance and includes pick-up and drop-off.

Samui's Season (Different from the Andaman) & Trip Planning

One thing many visitors miss: Koh Samui (Gulf of Thailand) has a different season from Phuket and Krabi (Andaman). Samui's heaviest rain is Oct–Dec, while the sea is at its best in Feb–Apr and Jun–Aug. So when the Andaman coast is in monsoon, Samui is often a much better option. With 3–4 days, divide them into an Ang Thong day, a Koh Tao or diving day, and an on-island day (Big Buddha, waterfall, Bophut Fisherman's Village). For scuba diving read the diving guide (Koh Tao is one of Thailand's most famous dive-training spots), or compare other island tours in the island-hopping guide.

💡 Tips for getting the most out of Koh Samui

🗓️
Check the season carefully

Samui differs from the Andaman coast. Heavy rain: Oct–Dec. Best seas: Feb–Apr and Jun–Aug. Plan island tours accordingly.

🌅
Book Ang Thong on a morning departure

Calmer seas and fewer people — you'll need the energy for kayaking and the viewpoint hike.

🤢
Prone to seasickness? Take the big boat

Both Ang Thong and Koh Tao tours offer speedboat and big-boat options. If you get seasick easily, go with the big boat and bring medication.

🙏
Dress modestly at temples

Cover shoulders and knees at Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) and Wat Plai Laem. Remove shoes at designated spots.

FAQ

What are the unmissable attractions on Koh Samui?

The Ang Thong (Mu Ko Ang Thong) National Marine Park tour (42 islands, inner sea / hidden lagoon) is the number-one highlight. Next up: Koh Tao + Koh Nang Yuan for snorkellers and divers. On the island itself: Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai), Wat Plai Laem, Na Muang waterfall, and Bophut Fisherman's Village.

How much do Koh Samui tours cost?

Island tours (Ang Thong / Koh Tao) run roughly 1,500–2,800 THB per person depending on boat type, usually including pick-up and lunch. Big Buddha, the waterfall, and Bophut Fisherman's Village are free or very cheap to visit independently.

When is the best time to visit Koh Samui?

Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand and follows a different season from Phuket and Krabi. The sea is at its best Feb–Apr and Jun–Aug; heaviest rain is Oct–Dec. If the Andaman coast is in monsoon, Samui is often the smarter choice.

How do you visit Ang Thong (Mu Ko Ang Thong) National Marine Park?

It's an archipelago of 42 islands in the Gulf of Thailand. The highlights are the inner sea / hidden lagoon (emerald-coloured water), a viewpoint hike, and kayaking. Boats depart from Koh Samui — choose a speedboat (faster) or big boat (steadier). Tours usually include lunch.

Are Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan good for diving?

Absolutely. Koh Tao is one of Thailand's most renowned dive-training destinations, with clear water and beautiful coral. Koh Nang Yuan has a scenic viewpoint reached by a sandbar walk connecting the islands. The speedboat transfer from Samui takes roughly 1.5 hours.
