Lampang is just the right size for a day trip. The main sights aren't far apart — it's about 18 km from town to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, only 25–30 minutes by car, while the old town, Kad Kong Ta, and the cafes are all within walking distance of each other in one neighbourhood. The trick is to do the out-of-town stop (the temple) in the morning while the sun is still soft, then ease back into town mid-morning so you're not zigzagging back and forth.
Before you set out
If you don't have your own car, you can rent a motorbike in town for around ฿250–300 a day, or hire a songthaew/taxi to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang and back. Agree on the price before you get in — it saves hassle. The horse-drawn carriages are great for short sightseeing loops around the old town, but not for running out of town.
Morning — Wat Phra That Lampang Luang
Start the day with Lampang's headline sight. Wat Phra That Lampang Luang sits in Ko Kha district, about 18 km southwest of town, and is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved Lanna temples in the North. The main viharn is open-sided with no walls, and the golden chedi stands tall on a low hill. Climb the naga staircase and you reach a wide, quiet courtyard.

What to wear
This is an old temple still used for active worship, so dress modestly — nothing too short, no bare shoulders — and take off your shoes before entering the viharn. The old wooden floors can be slippery, so watch your step.

Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Late morning–midday — Khao soi, then the old town
Back in town, refuel with northern Thai food first. Lampang is known for khao soi and gaeng hang lay, with both long-running shops and atmospheric wooden-house spots. Once you're full, walk it off in the old town along the Wang River — a neighbourhood that packs temples, antique wooden houses, and characterful little shops all within walking distance.

Afternoon — Horse carriage and a wooden-house cafe
The afternoon is when Lampang is at its most charming. As the sun softens, it's a good time for a horse-drawn carriage ride around town — a Lampang signature you won't find anywhere else in Thailand — followed by a coffee stop. Cafes here range from old wooden houses by the river to minimalist spots in the Kad Kong Ta area. Pick one and rest your legs.

Cafes in Lampang town to drop into during the day
Pick one of these for your afternoon break. Most are in the old town–Kad Kong Ta area, all within walking distance, with coffee in the ฿55–90 range, typical for a provincial-town cafe.
At One Kad Kong Ta
A cafe in an old building in the Kad Kong Ta area, with its standout second-floor balcony looking out over Lampang town. There's coffee, breakfast, pizza, and desserts, and you can linger for hours from morning till evening.
Tim Pang Nom Sod Kad Kong Ta
A classic, vintage-style spot for fresh milk, toast, and ice cream on the walking-street strip. Good for a light, cool-down dessert at friendly prices.
Pang Suree Art Home
A white house decorated with local folk art, with plenty of photo corners and a quiet, easygoing feel. A nice place to chill and take photos in the old town.
Chaosua Tea Room & Homestay
A tea room in an old house with a Chinese–Lanna feel, serving tea and desserts; it's also a homestay. Open until evening on weekdays, and later into the night on weekends.
Evening — Kad Kong Ta walking street
Cap the day at Kad Kong Ta, the Saturday–Sunday walking street in the old market quarter along the Wang River. It has the feel of an old Chinese market, with wooden buildings lining both sides and plenty of local food, souvenirs, crafts, and kids' toys to browse. This is where locals and visitors alike come to walk in the evening.

If you come on a weekday
Kad Kong Ta is only in full swing on Saturday and Sunday. If you come Monday–Friday, the area is quiet, so swap dinner for a northern-food restaurant in town, or a cafe that stays open late, like At One.
Route and budget recap for 1 day
- Morning — Wat Phra That Lampang Luang (Ko Kha), free entry
- Late morning–midday — Northern meal + Wat Phra Kaeo Don Tao + Baan Sao Nak + old-town walk
- Afternoon — Horse carriage + wooden-house cafe + ceramic souvenirs
- Evening — Kad Kong Ta (Sat–Sun) or a restaurant in town
- Overall budget per person — around ฿600–1,000 including food, the carriage, a cafe, and a few small souvenirs (excluding vehicle rental)
All of this fits comfortably into a single day. If you have more time, Lampang also has the Thai Elephant Conservation Center, Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat (a temple on a mountain ridge), and Chae Son National Park to add on the following day.
