Lampang in 1 Day
Old Town – Temple – Cafes

Lampang is a town you can see in a single day without rushing, as long as you order the stops well. Head out in the morning to the temple of Wat Phra That Lampang Luang just outside town, swing back mid-morning to walk the old town along the Wang River, sip coffee in an old wooden house in the afternoon, and cap the day at Kad Kong Ta. This is a plan you can actually follow, with opening hours we've checked.

Lampang in 1 Day Old Town – Temple – Cafes

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Lampang is just the right size for a day trip. The main sights aren't far apart — it's about 18 km from town to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, only 25–30 minutes by car, while the old town, Kad Kong Ta, and the cafes are all within walking distance of each other in one neighbourhood. The trick is to do the out-of-town stop (the temple) in the morning while the sun is still soft, then ease back into town mid-morning so you're not zigzagging back and forth.

Before you set out

If you don't have your own car, you can rent a motorbike in town for around ฿250–300 a day, or hire a songthaew/taxi to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang and back. Agree on the price before you get in — it saves hassle. The horse-drawn carriages are great for short sightseeing loops around the old town, but not for running out of town.

Morning — Wat Phra That Lampang Luang

Start the day with Lampang's headline sight. Wat Phra That Lampang Luang sits in Ko Kha district, about 18 km southwest of town, and is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved Lanna temples in the North. The main viharn is open-sided with no walls, and the golden chedi stands tall on a low hill. Climb the naga staircase and you reach a wide, quiet courtyard.

Morning

Out of town · Ko Kha

07:30
Leave central Lampang and drive to Wat Phra That Lampang LuangAbout 18 km, 25–30 min. You can grab coffee or patongko along the way.
08:00
Pay respects at the temple; explore the main viharn, Viharn Nam Taem, and the Phra Chao Lan Thong shrineThe temple opens early, around 07:30–17:00, free entry. Mornings have lovely light and fewer people.
09:00
Look for the famous upside-down image of the chedi in the Buddha viharn (projected through a small hole in the wall)A little-known corner many people miss. Ask staff to point out the spot — no entry fee.
09:45
Drive back into central LampangBefore the heat builds, timed nicely for a late breakfast in town.

What to wear

This is an old temple still used for active worship, so dress modestly — nothing too short, no bare shoulders — and take off your shoes before entering the viharn. The old wooden floors can be slippery, so watch your step.

Late morning–midday — Khao soi, then the old town

Back in town, refuel with northern Thai food first. Lampang is known for khao soi and gaeng hang lay, with both long-running shops and atmospheric wooden-house spots. Once you're full, walk it off in the old town along the Wang River — a neighbourhood that packs temples, antique wooden houses, and characterful little shops all within walking distance.

The afternoon is when Lampang is at its most charming. As the sun softens, it's a good time for a horse-drawn carriage ride around town — a Lampang signature you won't find anywhere else in Thailand — followed by a coffee stop. Cafes here range from old wooden houses by the river to minimalist spots in the Kad Kong Ta area. Pick one and rest your legs.

FAQ

Is 1 day enough for Lampang?

It's enough for the main highlights — Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, the riverside old town, a horse-carriage ride, a cafe, and Kad Kong Ta. If you order it so the out-of-town stop comes in the morning and you sightsee in town afterward, you won't get worn out or have to double back.

What time does Wat Phra That Lampang Luang open, and is there an entry fee?

It's open daily around 07:30–17:00 and entry is free. It sits in Ko Kha district, about 18 km from central Lampang. Go in the morning, when the sun is still soft and there are fewer people.

What days is Kad Kong Ta open?

Kad Kong Ta is a walking street open only on Saturday and Sunday evenings, around 17:00–22:00. If you come on a weekday the area is quiet, so switch to dinner at a restaurant in town or a cafe that stays open late instead.

Do you need your own vehicle to see Lampang town?

The old town is walkable and has horse carriages, but Wat Phra That Lampang Luang is 18 km out of town, so you'll need transport. We'd suggest renting a motorbike for around ฿250–300 a day, or hiring a songthaew there and back — agree on the price before you get in.

What's the best time of year to visit Lampang?

November to February has cool, comfortable weather, best for outdoor sightseeing. In the rainy season the temple and old town turn lush and green, but bring an umbrella. Avoid March–April, when northern Thailand can have haze problems.
