The only town in Thailand that still runs horse carriages for visitors. A slow ride through the old quarter along the Wang River.
The town's iconic old wooden temple, with a golden chedi and an ancient hall. There's a spot where you can see the upside-down reflection of the stupa.
A riverside walking street along the Wang, lined with old wooden houses and Sino-Burmese buildings. Open weekends, packed with food and stalls.
The town's signature craft. There are factories and a museum where you can watch them being made, and pick up a rooster-pattern bowl to take home.
An elephant care center and hospital at Hang Chat. You can see the elephants and learn how they're looked after.
White chedis lined up along a limestone ridge — an unusual, striking view. Climb up for a wide sweep of mountains.

Lampang's signature food — real local spots, rounded up and ranked
Khao soi, nam ngiao, kaeng hang le, sai ua — easy to find all over town, cooked the proper northern way.
Watermelon-glazed khao taen rice crackers are the town's classic souvenir — crisp, just sweet enough, and easy to carry home.
An old shop by the Wang River where you sit with your legs hanging over the railing. A local institution worth trying when you're in Lampang.
Rice noodles topped with northern-style nam ngiao broth, eaten with veggies and pork crackling. Found at markets and morning shops.
The old quarter has plenty of cafes set inside wooden houses and old shophouses — good for a coffee in a retro setting.
A favorite dinner for locals — Thai BBQ hotpot. Lots of places to choose from at easygoing prices.
The town markets have rice-and-curry plates, local sweets, and breakfast bites to graze on at local prices.

Lampang is a northern town that still holds on to its old-time feel. Horse-drawn carriages really do trot through the center, there are old wooden houses along the Wang River, centuries-old temples, and the rooster-bowl pottery the town is famous for. Lately more cafes and younger shops have moved into the old buildings, which makes wandering the old quarter a real pleasure. If you like a town that isn't in a rush and isn't crowded, Lampang is easy to reach and easy to settle into.
