If we had to pick just one restaurant on Koh Samui to bring a friend to and show them how far home-style Southern Thai cooking can go, it would be Baan Suan Lung Khai in Taling Ngam, the south side of the island that most tourists drive straight through on their way to a sunset view, never knowing there's something this good tucked inside a coconut grove. This isn't a hotel chef's restaurant or a place run by descendants of an old restaurant family — it belongs to "Lung Khai," Amrit Srisungnoen, a former construction contractor on the island who loved cooking so much he decided to set up wooden tables in his own coconut grove around August 2019. From a handful of tables in a garden, it grew into a restaurant that MICHELIN has awarded Bib Gourmand three years running, 2024–2026, and even wrote a dedicated Behind the Bib feature about — an honor not every Bib restaurant gets.
What won MICHELIN over is the straightforward honesty of the ingredients. Lung Khai buys fish, crab, and shrimp directly from local fishermen around the island, then cooks them true Southern-style in an open kitchen you can watch from your seat. The restaurant serves set menus only — there's no à la carte to pick dishes from one by one. You just choose your price per head: 350, 500, 700, or 1,000 baht, and leave the rest to the kitchen to put together based on what came in that day. The Southern seafood set is the heart of the restaurant — blue swimmer crab already picked clean so you don't have to get your hands messy, and grilled prawns sweet and juicy, eaten with jasmine rice or pandan coconut rice served on a woven tray under a dome cover. That image of the cover being lifted off in the middle of a coconut grove is exactly what MICHELIN singled out. The meal closes with traditional local sweets that make it feel as warm as eating at a relative's house.
The setting in Taling Ngam only adds to the charm. The south side of Samui is the side that still holds onto the island's old coconut-grove feel from before the resort era — locals still go out fishing, and the coconut groves are still real groves, not backdrops for photos. Sitting down to eat blue swimmer crab pulled straight from the sea in front of you, in the grove of the person who cooked it, is an experience Chaweng or Bophut simply can't offer. If you're already planning a sunset at Virgin Coast or a stop at Hin Ta Hin Yai, pairing it with dinner here is the most natural route on Samui's south side. Just don't forget the one hard rule — booking ahead is mandatory.
Baan Suan Lung Khai
Baan Suan Lung Khai sits on Round-Island Road Route 4170 in Ban Taling Ngam, on the south side of Koh Samui, about a 40-minute drive from Chaweng Beach and close to the Virgin Coast side and the island's sunset viewpoints. The restaurant is open every day in two seatings, 11:00–14:00 and 16:30–19:30, but only for guests who have booked ahead — walk-ins are not accepted at all, since Lung Khai prepares ingredients based on each day's reservation count. You need to call at least 1 day ahead at 098-015-2845 or 083-984-5629 (Wongnai notes LINE booking is also available). During high season, Dec–Feb, book several days ahead.
Pricing is a set menu per person, with 4 price tiers to choose from: 350, 500, 700, or 1,000 baht. When you book, let them know your headcount and budget, and the kitchen will put together a meal based on that day's fresh ingredients. Dress is casual, since you're eating out in a coconut grove. The recommended time is the evening seating at 16:30, so you finish in time to head to the sunset viewpoint on the Taling Ngam side right after. The daytime seating suits anyone staying on the south side or doing an island driving loop.
