Phuket Aquarium is a comfortably sized aquarium you can walk in about an hour to an hour and a half, small enough that little legs do not get tired. The route is indoors and air-conditioned, with colourful tanks spaced along the way. Toddlers tend to love the spots where fish swim slowly and close to the glass, while parents can read the panels about Andaman Sea life at the same time. What sets this place apart is that it is also a research and rehabilitation center, not just a fish display, so kids take in both the beauty and a gentle lesson about caring for the sea.
Highlights for kids
A single visit has several spots where kids stop and stare. Here are the zones children enjoy most, so you can plan the walk without missing the best bits.
- Underwater ocean tunnel — a curved walkway about 9 metres long where sharks, rays and reef fish swim all around you, just like being under the sea. This is the moment kids get most excited.
- Giant grouper tank — a large multi-sided display tank home to big groupers, whose sheer size usually leaves children wide-eyed.
- Sea turtle nursery — a nursery and rehabilitation area for injured sea turtles, where kids see baby turtles and learn why they matter.
- Clownfish and seahorses — clownfish (Nemo) tucked in their anemones and tiny seahorses, the little stars kids point at and call out every time.
- Curious Andaman species — lionfish, moray eels and other brightly coloured fish, with panels explaining which are dangerous and which are simply cute.
- Endangered marine species museum — an education zone on threatened sea creatures, a nice short lesson for slightly older kids.
Tips to keep kids happy
Try to arrive before 11.00am, as there is often a fish-feeding moment at the big tank that kids find mesmerising. The building is an indoor walkway you can push a stroller along almost the whole way. Bring water and a snack for little ones, and if you are with a toddler, allow time to pause at the slow-swimming tanks so they can watch as long as they like.
Before you go
- Opening hours — open daily, roughly 8.30am to 4.30pm. Arrive before mid-afternoon so you can walk the whole route without rushing.
- Approximate entry — Thai visitors around ฿50 adult and ฿20 child; foreign visitors around ฿300 adult and ฿150 child; children under 108 cm, seniors 60+, monks and people with disabilities enter free. Prices are approximate and may change, so check the venue's page or the counter again.
- Getting there — at Cape Panwa, the far southeastern tip of the island, about 10 km from Phuket Town, roughly a 20–30 minute drive or taxi ride. Just pin "Phuket Aquarium" in Google Maps; there is parking on site.
- Best ages — enjoyable from toddlers up to primary-school kids: little ones watch fish up close, older kids can read the panels. Plan on about 1–1.5 hours.
Safety and value
Lighting inside the tunnel and around the tanks is fairly dim, so hold small children's hands and skip the camera flash, which disturbs the animals. This aquarium belongs to a marine research center that genuinely nurses and rehabilitates turtles and other sea life. Entry is inexpensive and you get both fun and learning, which makes it good value for a family trip, especially on a hot or rainy day when you want a shaded indoor place for the kids to roam.
