The charm of this route is that you don't have to rush. It's a little over 100 km from Ban Krut down to Chumphon town β drive it straight through and it's only about an hour and a half, but stop along the beaches and check-in spots and you can easily fill a whole day. The sights line up in a long row along the coast, so it makes sense to plan it as a steady run south, one stretch at a time. Spend the first night around Ban KrutβBang Saphan, then cross over and sleep the second night on the Chumphon side, so you never have to backtrack.
Pick a calm-sea season before you plan
On the Gulf side around Prachuap and Chumphon, the water is clearest and the sea calmest roughly from February to May. During the monsoon (late in the year into early the next), waves pick up and rain is frequent, and some beaches turn murky. If you're set on swimming or snorkelling, avoid the monsoon β and keep in mind that on some days the sea just won't be as clear as in the photos.
The overall route before you set off
The main artery is Phetkasem Road (Highway 4), which runs all the way south, but the fun parts are the small coastal lanes that branch off toward the sea β especially around Ban KrutβMae Ramphueng and the PathioβThung Wua Laen side of Chumphon. Fill up the tank in town before you go, because petrol stations are fairly spread out along the coastal stretches.
- Ban Krut β Bang Saphan Noi β about 30β40 km, partly along the coast, an easy half hour if you don't stop
- Bang Saphan Noi β Pathio (Chumphon) β crossing the provincial line, about 50β60 km, a bit over an hour, passing Chai Rat and Tha Sae
- Pathio β Chumphon town β another 30β40 km, with Thung Wua Laen Beach and Hin Kop Bridge to stop at along the way

Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want β prices and availability are shown live on each site.
The plan, day by day
The far south of Prachuap: Ban Krut, Wat Thang Sai, Bang Saphan
Crossing into Chumphon: Pathio, Hin Kop Bridge, Thung Wua Laen Beach
Chumphon town and Sai Ri Beach before heading home
Food stops along the way
On a coast-hugging trip like this you don't need to plan meals tightly, since seafood places line the beaches the whole way. But there are a few local specialities worth trying at each stretch.
- Prachuap mackerel β along the Prachuap stretch you can still find fresh mackerel, fried or simmered in salt and eaten with hot rice, simple home-style and delicious
- Beachfront seafood at Ban KrutβThung Wua Laen β fresh fish, prawns, squid and shellfish, cheaper than the big tourist towns
- Chumphon old-style coffee and lady-finger bananas β the town's signature souvenirs, easy to find both in town and at roadside shops
On the car and getting around
This route is at its best when you self-drive, because the sights are spread out and public transport doesn't reach the small beaches. If you don't have a car, there are vans and intercity buses between Prachuap and Chumphon (fares from around 280 THB), but you won't be able to beach-hop as freely. Check your tyres and fill up before the coastal stretches.
