Prachuap to Chumphon Road Trip
Working South Down the Coast

If you've been treating Prachuap and Chumphon as two separate trips, try stringing them into one line. This stretch of road along the Gulf of Thailand is a fun drive, with the sea on your left almost the whole way. Stop at quiet beaches, hilltop temples and piers that reach out over the water, then keep drifting south. This plan runs 3 days and 2 nights, self-drive, starting from the far south of Prachuap at Ban Krut and Bang Saphan, crossing into Chumphon around Pathio, and finishing near Chumphon town and Sai Ri Beach β€” with distances, drive times and stops we checked along the way.

Prachuap to Chumphon Road Trip Working South Down the Coast

πŸ”„ Updated 21 Jun 2026

The charm of this route is that you don't have to rush. It's a little over 100 km from Ban Krut down to Chumphon town β€” drive it straight through and it's only about an hour and a half, but stop along the beaches and check-in spots and you can easily fill a whole day. The sights line up in a long row along the coast, so it makes sense to plan it as a steady run south, one stretch at a time. Spend the first night around Ban Krut–Bang Saphan, then cross over and sleep the second night on the Chumphon side, so you never have to backtrack.

Pick a calm-sea season before you plan

On the Gulf side around Prachuap and Chumphon, the water is clearest and the sea calmest roughly from February to May. During the monsoon (late in the year into early the next), waves pick up and rain is frequent, and some beaches turn murky. If you're set on swimming or snorkelling, avoid the monsoon β€” and keep in mind that on some days the sea just won't be as clear as in the photos.

The overall route before you set off

The main artery is Phetkasem Road (Highway 4), which runs all the way south, but the fun parts are the small coastal lanes that branch off toward the sea β€” especially around Ban Krut–Mae Ramphueng and the Pathio–Thung Wua Laen side of Chumphon. Fill up the tank in town before you go, because petrol stations are fairly spread out along the coastal stretches.

  • Ban Krut β†’ Bang Saphan Noi β€” about 30–40 km, partly along the coast, an easy half hour if you don't stop
  • Bang Saphan Noi β†’ Pathio (Chumphon) β€” crossing the provincial line, about 50–60 km, a bit over an hour, passing Chai Rat and Tha Sae
  • Pathio β†’ Chumphon town β€” another 30–40 km, with Thung Wua Laen Beach and Hin Kop Bridge to stop at along the way

The plan, day by day

Day 1

The far south of Prachuap: Ban Krut, Wat Thang Sai, Bang Saphan

Morning
Arrive at Ban Krut, take a long walk on the beachBan Krut beach stretches for several kilometres, with firm sand that's easy to walk on, and it's quiet in the morning. Grab a coffee at a beachfront cafΓ© before heading out.
Late morning
Head up Wat Thang Sai to see Phra Mahathat Chedi Phakdi PrakatThe temple sits on Khao Thong Chai. The white nine-spired chedi looks out over the curve of Ban Krut bay and a long line of coconut palms. Free entry, dress modestly β€” one of the best sea-view photo spots in the area.
Midday
Seafood at a beachfront restaurant in Ban KrutThere are plenty of seafood places along the beach, serving fresh fish, prawns and squid at prices friendlier than Hua Hin.
Afternoon
Drive down to Bang Saphan, stop at Mae Ramphueng BeachMae Ramphueng Beach in the Bang Saphan area is a long, quiet stretch with a coastal road that's nice for a relaxed drive β€” a good spot to watch the sunset in the evening.
Evening
Check in around Ban Krut / Bang SaphanAccommodation here ranges from beachfront resorts to small guesthouses. Sleep on the Prachuap side for the first night, then cross provinces tomorrow.
Day 2

Crossing into Chumphon: Pathio, Hin Kop Bridge, Thung Wua Laen Beach

Morning
Leave Bang Saphan, drive south across into ChumphonThis stretch passes through Chai Rat and Tha Sae, a mix of highway and coastal road. Drive at an easy pace and you'll reach the Pathio district in a bit over an hour.
Late morning
Stop at Hin Kop Bridge in PathioA long bridge reaching out into the sea at Pathio, good for photos. Free entry, open all day β€” a nice leg-stretch before heading into Chumphon town.
Midday
Thung Wua Laen Beach: swim and lunch by the shoreA long crescent-shaped beach, about 5–6 km, with clear water and white sand, plus seafood restaurants and beachfront stays. The southern end near Khao Pho Bae is a popular snorkelling spot.
Afternoon
Relax at Thung Wua Laen Beach, or paddle a kayakIf the water's calm, try paddling a kayak along the shore, or just lie under a parasol all afternoon. It's quieter here than the famous beaches over on the Andaman side.
Evening
Check in on the Chumphon sideStay either around Thung Wua Laen Beach or in Chumphon town β€” town has more restaurants and an evening market to wander and eat at.
Day 3

Chumphon town and Sai Ri Beach before heading home

Morning
Sai Ri Beach and the shrine of Prince ChumphonSai Ri Beach is home to the memorial of Admiral Prince Abhakara of Chumphon, who laid the foundations of the Royal Thai Navy. White sand, clear water, good for snorkelling and kayaking β€” somewhere just about every Chumphon local will take you.
Late morning
Browse the market and pick up souvenirs in Chumphon townChumphon is known for old-style coffee, lady-finger bananas and dried seafood. Stop by a market in town to grab souvenirs before you head off.
Midday
Lunch before the drive back northHave a meal of seafood or punchy southern Thai food, then drive back up Phetkasem. It's about 3.5–4 hours from Chumphon up to Hua Hin.
Spare time
Revisit a spot you missed earlierIf you have time on the way back, swing by somewhere you passed and want to see again β€” like Hin Kop Bridge when the light's softer, or another round at Ban Krut beach.

Food stops along the way

On a coast-hugging trip like this you don't need to plan meals tightly, since seafood places line the beaches the whole way. But there are a few local specialities worth trying at each stretch.

  • Prachuap mackerel β€” along the Prachuap stretch you can still find fresh mackerel, fried or simmered in salt and eaten with hot rice, simple home-style and delicious
  • Beachfront seafood at Ban Krut–Thung Wua Laen β€” fresh fish, prawns, squid and shellfish, cheaper than the big tourist towns
  • Chumphon old-style coffee and lady-finger bananas β€” the town's signature souvenirs, easy to find both in town and at roadside shops

On the car and getting around

This route is at its best when you self-drive, because the sights are spread out and public transport doesn't reach the small beaches. If you don't have a car, there are vans and intercity buses between Prachuap and Chumphon (fares from around 280 THB), but you won't be able to beach-hop as freely. Check your tyres and fill up before the coastal stretches.

FAQ

Does the drive from Prachuap to Chumphon take long?

Straight through from Ban Krut down to Chumphon town is a little over 100 km, about an hour and a half. But stop at beaches and check-in spots along the way and it fills the whole day, which is why this plan runs 3 days and 2 nights so you don't have to rush.

When should I go for the best sea conditions?

On the Gulf side around Prachuap and Chumphon, the water is clearest and the sea calmest roughly from February to May. During the monsoon from late in the year into early the next, waves are stronger and rain is frequent, and some beaches turn murky β€” so if you're set on swimming or snorkelling, avoid the monsoon.

Can I do this route without my own car?

You can, but it's not as flexible as driving yourself. There are vans and intercity buses between Prachuap and Chumphon, with fares from around 280 THB, but small beaches like Ban Krut or Thung Wua Laen aren't reachable by public transport right to the sand β€” you'd need to take a local hired ride the rest of the way.

Where are Hin Kop Bridge and Thung Wua Laen Beach?

Both are in Pathio district, Chumphon province, along the way before you reach Chumphon town. Hin Kop Bridge is free to enter and open all day, while Thung Wua Laen is a long curving beach of about 5–6 km with clear water, restaurants and beachfront stays.

Where should I stay during this trip?

For the first night, sleep on the Prachuap side around Ban Krut or Bang Saphan. For the second night, cross over to the Chumphon side near Thung Wua Laen Beach or in town, so you keep drifting south without backtracking.
