Where to stay in
Khao San & Old City

Khao San and the Old City (Rattanakosin/Phra Nakhon) is the part of Bangkok you can spend a whole day exploring on foot. The Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, and Wat Pho are all a short walk apart, while Khao San Road and Soi Rambuttri pack in cheap guesthouses, bars, and street food. The one thing to know before you book: no train line runs through here, so getting to other districts means catching the express boat at Phra Athit pier or grabbing a taxi. The picks below run from party dorms to riverside boutiques.

FAQ

Is it hard to get around from Khao San without a BTS station?

It takes a little planning, since no BTS or MRT runs through here. The popular option is the Chao Phraya express boat from Phra Athit pier down to Sathorn, where you can connect to the BTS, or just take a taxi/Grab. For Don Muang or Suvarnabhumi airports, a car is easiest. The Old City temples themselves are all within comfortable walking distance.

Is Khao San Road noisy, and which room should I pick?

The heart of Khao San Road and Soi Rambuttri has bars open late, so expect noise into the early hours. If you don't sleep easily, ask for a room facing inward or away from the main street, or choose a place set back a little, like the Phra Athit, Banglamphu canal, or Samsen Road side, which are much quieter.

Is Khao San good for families, or just for backpackers?

Both, depending on where you stay. Khao San Road itself leans toward backpackers and night owls, but the surrounding area has hotels with pools and family rooms, like Nouvo City or Royal Rattanakosin. The upside is being close to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, which are easy to walk to with kids. Just avoid the rooms right by the bar streets.
