Where to stay in
Sai Tai Mai–Taling Chan

Sai Tai Mai and Taling Chan form a long stretch of western Thonburi running along Borommaratchachonnani Road and Khlong Chak Phra. Most people know the area for two things. The first is the Southern Bus Terminal, the departure point for coaches to Phuket, Krabi, Surat Thani, Hua Hin, and Kanchanaburi. The second is the Taling Chan Floating Market, open only on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. People who stay here usually have a clear reason: an overnight before an early bus, or a weekend of floating markets and longtail-boat trips through the canals on the true Thonburi side. The appeal is that it's still a zone of fruit orchards and old canalside houses, with several floating markets close together, Taling Chan, Khlong Lat Mayom, and Wat Saphan among them. You reach the centre along Borommaratchachonnani toward Pinklao and Central Pinklao, or by joining the MRT Blue Line at Bang Khun Non. Stays are mostly three-star hotels, canalside places, and affordable daily-rate apartments. Worth knowing: Borommaratchachonnani jams up morning and evening, the area is spread out, and some spots aren't right by a train, so leave extra time and check the real distance before booking.

FAQ

Is the Sai Tai Mai–Taling Chan area convenient for catching long-distance buses?

Very convenient. The Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai, Taling Chan) sits on Borommaratchachonnani Road in the middle of the area and is the departure point for coaches to Phuket, Krabi, Surat Thani, Hua Hin, and Kanchanaburi. Many stays along Borommaratchachonnani are a short taxi or car ride from the terminal. It's ideal for anyone with an early departure who wants to stay nearby the night before. Check the schedule and book tickets ahead during holidays, when it gets busy.

What days is the Taling Chan Floating Market open, and what's good to eat?

The Taling Chan Floating Market opens only on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, roughly 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The highlight is seafood grilled on the boats, big river prawns, steamed blue crab, and salt-crusted sea bass stuffed with lemongrass, eaten at low tables on rafts over the canal, plus sweets like khanom buang. Close by are the Khlong Lat Mayom market in Bang Ramat and the Wat Saphan market in Bang Phrom, also open weekends, so you can visit several in one day. Bring cash, as most boat vendors take cash only.

Is it easy to reach the centre, or is the area far from the train?

This area leans on cars more than trains. You reach the centre along Borommaratchachonnani toward Pinklao, Central Pinklao, and the Phra Pin-klao Bridge across to Rattanakosin, or by joining the MRT Blue Line at Bang Khun Non on the Bangkok Noi side. Things to know: Borommaratchachonnani jams up morning and evening, the area is spread out, and some spots sit deep in orchard-and-canal lanes. Anyone with a car or comfortable using taxis and ride apps will be most at ease, while travellers who want to rely mainly on the train may prefer staying nearer the MRT around Pinklao.
