Where to stay in
Khao Tao–Suan Son

Khao Tao is a small fishing village at the very southern tip of Hua Hin, about 13 km and roughly twenty minutes' drive from town. A low hill splits the shoreline into two beaches: the long Sai Yai on one side and the small curved bay of Sai Noi on the other, where the water is fairly clear and the waves gentle. Locals tend to call the whole stretch Khao Tao beach. Up the hill you'll find Wat Tham Khao Tao and a large Buddha with a walk-up sea view, and close by is the leafy Khao Tao reservoir. Just to the north lies Suan Son Pradipat, a long pine-shaded beach run by the Thai Army where Thai families lay out mats and eat seafood on weekends. The draw here is the quiet and the genuine fishing-village life, with cheap fresh seafood and beaches far emptier than central Hua Hin. The trade-off is the distance and the near-total lack of public transport: without your own vehicle you'll need to charter a songthaew or rent a scooter from town. Weekdays are very still, while weekends fill up with Thai day-trippers in the late afternoon. Every hotel below is currently operating with reviews from real guests.

FAQ

Who is Khao Tao–Suan Son for, and how does it differ from central Hua Hin?

Khao Tao–Suan Son is much quieter and more natural than central Hua Hin. It's a fishing village with the clear water of Sai Noi beach, the pine-shaded Suan Son beach, and cheap fresh seafood. It suits couples, families, or anyone who wants a calm seaside break away from the bustle. The trade-off is the distance, about 13 km from town, with no walkable night market or nightlife. If you want lots of restaurants, big malls, and an evening stroll, central Hua Hin or Khao Takiab is a better match.

Can I stay in Khao Tao without a car, and how do I get around?

You can, but you'll need to plan transport carefully, because almost no public transport runs all the way down to Khao Tao. The easiest option is having your own car or renting a scooter from Hua Hin town. If you don't drive, you can use Grab or charter a songthaew or taxi from town to drop you off and collect you at a set time, which adds a cost every time you want to head out. So if you're staying several days and plan to go out for meals or sightseeing often, having a car or scooter is far more convenient and worthwhile.

What is there to see and eat near Khao Tao–Suan Son?

In the village there's Wat Tham Khao Tao and a large Buddha you can walk up to for a sea view, the leafy Khao Tao reservoir that's nice for photos, and the small Sai Noi beach with fairly clear water for swimming. Food is a highlight: as a fishing village it has several cheap, fresh seafood spots. A short drive north brings you to Suan Son Pradipat, a long pine-shaded beach where Thai families eat seafood by the sea on weekends. For more, central Hua Hin or Khao Takiab is about twenty minutes away by car.
