Where to stay in
Khuk Khak–Bang Sak (Khao Lak)

Khuk Khak and Bang Sak make up the coast north of central Khao Lak, about 10–20 minutes by car from the busier Bang Niang area and roughly 90 minutes from Phuket airport. Khuk Khak is a long sandy beach that stays quiet and natural, with relatively few resorts right on the sand. Bang Sak, further north, is the quietest beach and the northernmost stretch still counted as Khao Lak. The whole area is given over to mid-range and five-star resorts with large gardens and beachfront pools. The real draw is calm rather than convenience — there's almost no walkable street, few restaurants outside the hotels and little nightlife. It works best for couples, families who want an easy stay, and anyone planning to spend most of their time at the resort. The trade-off is that you have to plan transport, whether that's a hotel shuttle, a taxi or a self-drive rental.

FAQ

How is Khuk Khak–Bang Sak different from Bang Niang?

Bang Niang is the main tourist area of Khao Lak, with a night market, restaurants, bars and beach clubs you can walk to. Khuk Khak and Bang Sak are about 10–20 minutes further north by car — a quiet resort coast with little outside the hotels. Their appeal is long, quiet beaches and beachfront resorts. Choose Khuk Khak–Bang Sak for a peaceful, full-on relaxing trip; choose Bang Niang if you want to walk to food and drinks with shops near your room. Many people base themselves here and head into Bang Niang now and then.

Can I stay here without a car?

You can, but plan ahead. There's no real public transport and very few shops or restaurants outside the hotels, so most people rely on hotel shuttles, taxis, private cars or ride-hailing apps. If you mainly intend to stay at the resort and head out to Bang Niang or tours now and then, you'll be fine. But if you want to eat out every meal or see several places a day, a self-drive car or scooter is more flexible and cheaper over a longer stay. Many resorts run a scheduled shuttle into Bang Niang — worth checking when you book.

What's the difference between Khuk Khak and Bang Sak beaches?

Both beaches sit on the northern coast of Khao Lak but feel slightly different. Khuk Khak is a long, fairly quiet and natural sandy beach with few resorts on the sand — it's home to the JW Marriott and is the closer of the two to Bang Niang. Bang Sak, further north, is the quietest beach in Khao Lak, with few people and resorts like Outrigger and Le Méridien spread along its southern end. Choose Khuk Khak for a quiet beach that's still a little closer to shops; choose Bang Sak for the calmest, most natural beach setting.
