Where to stay in Tak

🔄 Updated 20 Jun 2026

Short answer: Tak is a large, spread-out province. For the border and Burmese culture stay in Mae Sot, a lively frontier town with markets, Burmese temples and the Myawaddy crossing. For adventure and Thi Lo Su Waterfall head to Umphang (deep beyond Mae Sot on a road of 1,219 bends — plan two nights); Tak city is a handy stop on the Ping River near Bhumibol Dam.

FAQ

Tak — stay in Mae Sot or Umphang?

Mae Sot is the main base — hotels, restaurants, an airport and a border market — good for Burmese culture and frontier shopping. For Thi Lo Su Waterfall you continue into Umphang, about four hours more, and should stay two nights there as the road is long and winding.

When is the best time for Thi Lo Su Waterfall?

Late rainy to early cool season (November–December) has the fullest, greenest flow, while in the rains (June–October) the wildlife sanctuary may close or the roads get rough, so check status first and book Umphang tours and rooms ahead in high season.

Can I cross to Myanmar at Mae Sot?

The Mae Sot–Myawaddy checkpoint is the main crossing, but whether it is open and the rules for crossing change with the border situation, so check the latest before you go. Many visit Mae Sot for the Rim Moei market, Burmese temples and Shan–Burmese food without crossing.
