If you want one restaurant that captures the phrase "Thai izakaya" better than anywhere else in Bangkok right now, it's Aunglo by Yangrak on Decho Road in Silom–Bang Rak. It's run by a young Thai-Chinese team who built the whole kitchen around a traditional aunglo charcoal brazier — nearly every dish that comes out of this place has passed over that charcoal fire, which is exactly why Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand starting with the 2023 guide and has kept it every year since, through 2026. That award goes to places that genuinely taste great at prices ordinary people can afford, and this restaurant earns it without argument — the skewers and small plates start in the tens of baht and top out around two hundred per dish.

The most fun way to eat here is to book the counter bar seats that face straight into the grill station, so you can watch the charcoal smoke rise and the grill cooks flip skewers right in front of you, then order a stack of dishes to share. The ones we'd tell you to try first are the assorted charcoal skewers off the aunglo brazier, followed by the grilled rice bowl with catch of the day — whatever's fresh that day — the grilled pork belly with Pattani salt, which has real savoury depth behind it, and finishing with the coconut pancake with southern curry shrimp, which sounds like an odd pairing but works so well you'll want to order it again. Charcoal smoke is the star of every plate here — if you love grilled food with real character, you'll be very happy at this restaurant.

Worth knowing: in 2025 the restaurant moved from its original building, where it had spent three years, to a bigger new space at 174/4-6 on the same Decho Road, and Michelin's 2026 review is based on this new site. That means more seats than before, but the crowds haven't let up — lunch fills up often and dinner walk-ins usually face a wait. Your best bet is booking through TableCheck ahead of time; the system opens bookings 30 days before your date, and don't arrive more than 30 minutes late or your table gets released. The restaurant is closed every Tuesday and open both lunch and dinner the rest of the week. It's just an 8-minute walk from BTS Chong Nonsi, making it a solid pick for an after-work dinner around Silom or a special night out with friends who want that real smoky, charcoal-grill Thai bar atmosphere.
