Krua Apsorn's Dusit branch on Samsen Road is the original outpost, open since 1996, and the story behind it is worth stopping to hear. The founder is "Aunt Daeng," Chanchawee Sakunkan, a cook who was invited to prepare food for a royal reception in 1969. Her skill caught the right eye, and she went on to serve as personal cook to the Princess Mother (Srinagarindra) for more than 25 years. When she opened her own restaurant, she named it after her sister Apsorn, and the family has run it themselves ever since. MICHELIN awarded it a Bib Gourmand in 2019 and it has held onto the distinction continuously through the 2026 guide, which describes it as a family-run institution for eating like a true local.
The dish that put Krua Apsorn on every Bangkok food-lover's lips is the fluffy crab omelette at THB 120 — a thick, airy omelette packed with so much crab meat it reads more like crab with a side of egg than a plain omelette. Order it alongside crab meat with yellow chilli and curry powder at THB 530, the most expensive dish on the table but worth every bite of crab. For a hit of home-style bold flavour, try the stink beans stir-fried with shrimp and minced pork, another house regular. The rest of the menu is classic Thai curries and stir-fries at very kind prices — yellow curry with prawns at THB 150, most stir-fries at THB 60–150, with most people spending only around THB 250–500 per person at a restaurant that has held its spot in the MICHELIN Guide for years running.
A detail most visitors don't know: Krua Apsorn now has 8 branches, but this Samsen Road location is the very first one, and the atmosphere is different from the busier Dinso Road branch that draws more tourists. Come to Dusit and you'll eat somewhere calmer, surrounded by more regular Thai customers, with the genuine feel of a legendary rice-and-curry shop. Getting there is part of the charm too, since there's no train line into this neighbourhood — the most fun way in is the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Thewet Pier (N15), followed by about a 7-minute walk. The restaurant opens Monday to Saturday roughly 10:30–19:30 and is closed Sundays, and MICHELIN notes this branch takes cash only — bring enough bills, and you'll get royal-kitchen-level cooking for street-curry prices.
Krua Apsorn (Dusit)
Krua Apsorn's Dusit branch is one of the easiest MICHELIN picks to plan around — just walk in and sit down, no reservation needed. Expect to spend around THB 250–500 per person: fluffy crab omelette THB 120, yellow curry with prawns THB 150, most stir-fries THB 60–150, and the priciest dish, crab meat with yellow chilli, THB 530. Importantly, this branch takes cash only, so withdraw money before you arrive. For larger groups, call ahead at 02 668 8788 or 02 241 8528, since there's no online booking system.
The restaurant is open Monday–Saturday roughly 10:30–19:30 and closed Sundays. Lunch is the peak period, so arrive before 11:30 or after 14:00 to skip the wait for a table. Getting there takes a little planning since there's no BTS/MRT within walking distance — your best bet is the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Thewet Pier (N15), then a 7-minute walk, or a taxi to Samsen Road near the National Library. Casual dress is fine.
