If you had to pick one restaurant on the Bib Gourmand list with the most heartwarming "story" in Bangkok, Prik-Yuak (Phya Thai) has to be on the shortlist. The place started back in 1991 as a small weekends-only khao gaeng (curry-and-rice) stall in Chatuchak market, before having to close during COVID. Then owner-chef Ann (Dararat Wisaijorn) brought the brand back to life in a location nobody would have guessed — a 70-year-old former kindergarten building of the old Rewadee School on Pradiphat Road, fully renovated into a restaurant. MICHELIN singled it out for over 30 years of home-style Thai cooking skill, combined with a clear kitchen philosophy: no MSG and no oyster sauce, not in a single dish. So every flavour comes purely from the ingredients and the cooking itself.
The dish MICHELIN calls out specifically is the Southern-style pork belly and egg palo stew — tender pork, served with boiled eggs and tofu, which has become the restaurant's signature dish. There's also the traditional khao gaeng that's been the root of the restaurant since its Chatuchak days, and khanom jeen nam prik starting at just 120-145 baht. For those who want to go all out, there's gaeng som (sour curry) with shrimp at 350 baht a plate, panang pork neck at 250 baht, right up to fresh crab lon at 520 baht a plate. All in, a meal runs about 250-500 baht per person — very comfortable pricing for a MICHELIN-listed restaurant. The atmosphere is just as much a draw as the food, since the dining rooms are converted kindergarten classrooms, and even the bathrooms keep the school-style feel intact. Walking around feels like stepping back into childhood.
What makes this place stand out from an ordinary khao gaeng shop is that the old school grounds hold more than just the dining room — there's also a garden to stroll through, a café serving coffee from Thai-origin beans, and a small boutique shop to browse. Off-peak weekday afternoons, when it's not crowded, are a great time to linger. There's parking right on the school grounds too, so no need to circle around looking for a spot. Two things worth remembering: first, the restaurant is closed every Monday, so anyone planning a trip should double-check the day; and second, it's cash only, as MICHELIN notes — bring enough bills and go enjoy that pork belly stew in an old kindergarten classroom.
Prik-Yuak (Phya Thai)
Budget runs around 250-500 baht per person, with single dishes starting from khanom jeen nam prik at 120-145 baht up to fresh crab lon at 520 baht — and again, cash only. There's no online booking system; the restaurant manages its own queue by phone at 081-648-2282 or by Facebook message to the restaurant's page, with no deposit required. Calling a day or two ahead is enough for a regular meal.
The restaurant is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00-21:00 (the kitchen tends to stop taking orders around 20:00-20:30), and is closed every Monday — the number-one trap for visitors, so don't forget to check the day before heading out. To get there, take the BTS to Saphan Khwai station, then walk about 15 minutes to the Pradiphat Road side. The restaurant sits inside the grounds of the old Rewadee School, at number 108. If you're driving, there's parking right on the school grounds. The best time to go is a quiet weekday afternoon, when you can stroll the garden, stop by the Thai-coffee café, and browse the shop on-site without feeling rushed.
