Mention Ayutthaya and a lot of people think of grilled river prawns first. Ask a local which shop does it right, and "Ruan Thai Kung Pao" comes up almost every time. The restaurant sits on the Chao Phraya riverbank next to Wat Choeng Len, in Ratchakram sub-district, Bang Sai district, and it's been open for more than 30 years — long enough that customers bring their kids back to eat here the way their own parents once did, and long enough that the MICHELIN Guide has kept handing it a Bib Gourmand year after year, right through the 2026 guide. The reason Michelin loves this place is spelled out clearly: it's an excellent source of river ingredients — big river prawns grilled here over charcoal, in a range of sizes to fit any budget or appetite. The glossy orange prawn fat that spills out when you crack open the head is exactly why people drive all the way out from Bangkok to Bang Sai for it.

The dish to order without question is the grilled river prawn, priced by weight at around THB 1,000–1,400 per kilogram depending on size and season. If your budget runs lighter, farmed-prawn dishes start around THB 450 and deliver the same flavor for less. But don't stop at prawns — the restaurant's river fish dishes hold their own just as strongly. Garlic-fried soft-boned fish is the dish Michelin calls out alongside the grilled prawn — thin, light fillets fried until fragrant and crisp, eaten with hot steamed rice, and you'll understand immediately why this riverside restaurant has lasted three decades. Beyond that there's salt-grilled prawns, fried fish cake, and stir-fried prawn claws with lotus stem, which regulars tend to order as extras to share around the table.

One thing worth knowing before you go is the "prawn reservation" system — genuine large river prawns are limited in number each day, so the restaurant takes phone bookings for prawns in advance alongside table bookings. Show up on a Saturday or Sunday without booking and you may only get small-sized prawns, or miss out entirely. The location itself tells a good chunk of the Ayutthaya story too — Bang Sai is a district where the Chao Phraya River is still the main artery of daily life, so river ingredients travel the shortest distance possible before hitting the charcoal grill. Sit and eat while watching the water flow by, then drop into Wat Choeng Len right next door to pay respects. It makes for the kind of lunch where an hour's drive from Bangkok feels like a full day out.

🥢Signature — Grilled river prawn

Budget around THB 300–600 per person. If you order the grilled river prawn, it's priced by weight at roughly THB 1,000–1,400 per kilogram, while farmed-prawn dishes start around THB 450. The restaurant is open daily 10:00–17:30 — note that it closes before dinner, with no evening service, so plan for lunch or early afternoon. Book by calling 035-333-410 or 081-269-5061, and it's worth "reserving your prawns" — the large river prawns — in advance along with your table booking, since big-sized river prawns are limited each day, especially on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays when the place gets very busy.

The restaurant sits on the Chao Phraya riverbank next to Wat Choeng Len, in Ratchakram sub-district, Bang Sai district, Ayutthaya province — about an hour's drive from Bangkok, with convenient parking available inside Wat Choeng Len. Weekday lunchtimes make it easier to snag a riverside table; if you're going on a weekend, call ahead several days in advance and arrive close to opening time to get both the prawn size you want and a river-view seat. Dress is casual. It pairs well with a same-day trip to pay respects at the temple or visit the Bang Sai Arts and Crafts Centre.
